"The pact" is a great book. I enjoyed reading every part of it. I loved the relationship that Indigo and Marcus had. They always had their back and had their place to go to to talk and relax. Summer was coming for them and Indigo wasnt't self confident about being enough for Marcus, so she talked to marcus about this pact thing which was if they didnt meet someone else at the end of their summer, they would be back together but if they did they wouldnt Indigo wanted to be free for her summer. I loved this story because it was true love. Even though they both went their seprate ways for the summer scared to meet and be attracted to someone else their hearts were both together as one. Even though Marcus met this girl and though she was really pretty and sexy, he was always thinking of Indigo and waiting for her call so he can head back to Chicago with her. Indigo on the other had was scared when her cousin the one that inspired her since they were little, her boyfriend was trying to malest her. She freaked out and called Marcus right away. Marcus did everything he needed to be with her in just hours. Aweeee how sweet thats a true boyfriend. When Marcus got there she felt safe and everything was going to be back to normal and to their normal lives. The pact was over once they both saw eachother and realized they LOVE eachother. I loved this book. I strongly recommend it.

This week I began reading 'The Pact' by Monica McKayhan. This is book number three in the chronicles of Indigo Summer. The book begins with Indigo finishing up her finals in Miss. Harris' class. She's done good in the class all year and feels like this is the perfect chance for her to do good on finals until most of the questions stumped her. During the test all she can think about is her boyfriend Marcus and what they will do during the summer for three months away from each other. After school Indigo and Marcus catch up and head to the mall as one of their last times together before they leave. While thinking about one of the boys who lives next to her grandmother in Chicago, Indigo decides it would be best to break up with Marcus. Marcus doesn't like the idea and Indigo tries to defend it and ultimately wins. But Marcus finds it suspicious. But Indigo has her reasons. However she is so worried about the guy in Chicago she doesn't worry about they girl Marcus could meet while on summer vacation in Houston with his mother. The chapter then switches to Marcus on the plane going to Houston. He flies there and meets up with his mom who takes him to their housing development. When he gets in his mom fixed dinner and heads off to work. So Marcus decides to go to the pool and sees a girl there that he takes interest in. Her name is Rena and he quickly gets her attention. Nothing about Indigo goes through his head now.

***UPDATE 4/18/13****
On the other hand Indigo is on her way to Chicago and all she can think about is the guy from across the street who she always had a thing for. From her window seat she sees the Navy Pier. As soon as Indigo and her dad pulled outside of her Nana's house she felt at home. When she walked inside she saw her cousin Little Keith, and her dads cousin Benny who each greeted them. Then she saw her cousin Doreen who reminded her of Sabrina who was Indigos cousin and once very good friend. After getting embarrassed by her family her dads brother Uncle Keith rescued her. He was her favorite relative and always knew how to help out his favorite niece. Afterward Indigo goes out back to see her other family members including her cousin Sabrina who at 17 became a teen mom. Indigo once envied her cousins life but not anymore. From the backyard Indigo heard music that she liked and saw her Nana dancing with all their relatives. She was very excited to see her grandma. After the cookout her and Sabrina decide to go to a party. Sabrina covers for Indi and they head over to Sabrina's place. Once again Indi envies Sabrinas life because of everything she has. An apartment, a car, a boyfriend who buys her anything. Sabrina even talks about marriage to him. After getting back from the club with Sabrina they met Sabrina's boyfriend Dugan at the door. Dugan kept making advances at Indigo but kept them pretty subtle. Indigo wasn't sure how to handle it and had a feeling she liked him.

*****UPDATE 4/24/13********
Marcus is having a good time with his mom in Texas since she is basically never at home and is always at work. He has free time to do whatever he wants. He still has a crush on Rena and visits her as much as he can until he realizes how cute Michelle could be. Everyday she comes over and barges in, at first Marcus doesn't like it but when she surprises him with Lil Wayne tickets he realizes she is the nicest person he's known in a while and sees him a lot difference. Marcus has a good day out with Michelle at the basketball court until he gets home and finds out that his mom has become engaged to her boyfriend Leon who now talks as if the three of them were his priority. After a month he finally meets him and doesn't know what to say to his mom and she is taken aback by his response. When Marcus tells his father that he is thinking of moving to Texas with his mom his dad becomes outraged and furious that he would leave him for the woman that walked out on them because she didn't want to be a mother or wife. But Marcus only did it to see how happy his mother would be and when she began crying he didn't know how to react. So he gave and answer before he was actually ready to do and instead of going back to Altanta with his father like he had originally planned he decides to stay in Texas to make his mom happy instead of doing what is best for him and not his mom.

*****UPDATE 5/18/13*
Marcus' life is everything he wants it to be. He has a mom who gives him everything he wants, a stepdad who seems to be the coolest and all the freedom he has ever wanted. He and Michelle hit it off from day one, and as annoying as she could be he realizes she is out there with his best interest in mind which puts him in odd perspective. Now he feels that he likes her and can't determine what to do between her or Rena. The cool thing to do would be with Rena, who's the hotter one instead of Michelle who's fun and likes everything he is into. When Marcus decides Texas is for him he tries to play out what exactly he will be doing with both girls. Indigo on the other hand took interest in Dugan but knows she cant like her cousins boyfriend so she leaves him alone. And though Indigo and Sabrina look identical there is something about Indigo that makes Dugan always wanna go to to her. Dugan tries it with Indigo and she knows its wrong but she goes for it and keeps it from Sabrina.

*****UPDATE 6/1/13********
Indigo goes for a Saturday morning outing with her Nana. They go to the mall and pick her up weekly necessities. Afterwards Indigo and her Nana go out for Chicago style deep dish pizza. As they begin to eat Nana asks her about her outing with Sabrina to the teen club. Indigo feels bad because she actually went to an older club. She knows she can't lie to her Nana but she secretly she envies Sabrina's life. Her Nana reads her like a book and tells her there is nothing to be jealous of. Sabrina is 17, with 2 kids, a boyfriend who is a bad influence, living on her own, doing who knows what to make money for her family. Even after Nana tells her she still feels like her life needs to be like Sabrina's. The story then switches to Marcus who goes out with her mothers fiancé, Leon, to get to know him better. At first he grills him but then he begins to like him and talk to him about his life and other things. Afterwards, Marcus, Michelle, and Andre make a new friend named Tiffany. After they swim they go back to her house and they watch movies and have fun. Rena becomes jealous of Marcus and Tiffany and invites herself into their house. Rena begins to lure Marcus into his room to ultimately get him to have sex but his mother comes in and stops it.

The Pact
It’s the end of freshman year. Indigo will be spending the summer in Chicago to see Nana Summer and Marcus will be headed to Houston to see his mother. Indigo suggests they break up for the summer just in case they meet other people they like better. Marcus clearly doesn’t like it but he goes along with it.

As soon as Marcus gets to Houston, a pretty lifeguard catches his attention (Rena). But unfortunately, a talkative girl that’s a friend of his mother’s (Michelle) keeps him occupied while at the pool. When Indi and her Dad (Harold) get to Chicago, Nana’s house is like an unofficial family reunion. Indi notices her cousin’s new boyfriend paying her a little too much attention. Marcus goes over to Rena to find out more about her. She invites him to play tennis in the morning, but he lets her know he’s not interested in that in the least (tennis or waking up that early). She leaves and a guy picks her up. Michelle informs him that it’s her boyfriend. Oh well, Marcus thinks. Rena was just a temporary distraction.

Sabrina (Indigo’s cousin) when they were younger they both looked alike. But now Sabrina has grown up and is a mother and has her own apartment. After all the relatives leave, Sabrina invites Indigo to go with her to a nightclub. On the way, they drop by Sabrina’s apartment and Dugan is there. The apartment is way too nice for someone who just works at a drugstore part-time. Indi racks up on numbers at the club. Sabrina tells her sometimes R-Kelly comes through (snorts he’d definitely hit on Indi she’s underage). Later in the middle of the night she and Dugan bond over grilled cheese sandwiches, dance moves, and hip-hop artists. When things start to get a little to “close” and Dugan starts telling her how beautiful she is, Indi starts to get uncomfortable (Have none of these people seen The Player’s Club?). Dugan then bounces (in the middle of the night now).

Rena invites Marcus to go to the beach and he can’t think of a reason to turn her down (REALLY? How bout uh NAH you got a man and I don’t want no drama over you with him). At the beach, Rena kisses Marcus, but on the way home, she tells him to forget it happened. He asks his mother why girls are so hard to understand. She says he probably never will. She then puts pressure on him to move to Houston. Later on, his mother springs it on him that she’s engaged to a man she’s been dating for nine months (Leon) that Marcus hardly knows anything about. After seeing how much his reaction upset her that because they’ve been apart she hasn’t been able to have him spend any time with her new man, Marcus decides to stay in Houston. Pops doesn’t like it but gives him his blessing.

Nana tries to warn Indigo, about glamorizing Sabrina’s lifestyle, but Indigo is already too far gone and wanting her cousin’s “perfect” life. (Sabrina we learn also shop-lifts). Marcus spends some time getting to know and bonding with Leon. Rena after seeing Marcus hanging out with another girl from the pool shows up at his place (jealous). One thing leads to another and they almost have sex. Indigo calls as it’s about to go down and he answers but she doesn’t say anything. Then his mother shows up. Marcus tries to sneak her out but they get caught. His mother warns him against having girls in his room. Marcus finds out Rena is a virgin and he’s glad he didn’t take it there with her. He knows he doesn’t love Rena, and his heart is still with Indigo.

After a 4rth celebration, Indigo and Nana return home. Indigo can’t find Nana for a moment and then sees her outside laying on the grass. She frantically calls 911. Nana is admitted to the hospital and even though she seems to be out of the woods, Indo wants to spend the night with her in ICU. The doctors won’t let her and it’s agreed she’ll stay with Sabrina. Marcus and Cedric (Rena’s boyfriend) get into a fight on the court over Rena. Marcus then finds out that Rena is pregnant and claiming it’s his. He confronts Rena and she says it’s Cedrics, but she told her Dad it was his because her Dad hates Cedric and thinks he’s a thug. She pleads with Marcus to just go along with it until the day she has scheduled to get an abortion. He’s uncomfortable with it but agrees to have her back and also take her to the appointment. So he takes her the next day but doesn’t go in with her. An hour later her father shows up at his house, slinging accusations. His mother doesn’t ask if the baby is even his. She just takes his car keys. It’s then Marcus decides Houston is no place for him. Rena just sits there and doesn’t defend him like she claimed she was going to after she had the abortion.

Indi and Sabrina go to the club again, and Sabrina gets drunk. Indi is forced to drive home and because she’s only got a permit and limited experience, she has a car crash. The lady and her kids are unconscious but Sabrina says that if they wait for (and call) the police they’ll have to spend the night in jail. Indi will also have to call her parents. So she waits until she’s a little away from the accident. Later that night, Dougan tries to practically rape Indi but is interrupted by Sabrina (who looks like she’s buying his excuse of Indi had it coming for being into him ever since she got there. So she leaves the apartment, calls her uncle, then Marcus. Marcus gets a flight out *immediately* and says goodbye to his Houston friends. He then pays Dougan a visit. Afterward, Sabrina asks he and Indi to leave. Marcus makes a call and Dugan is escorted out of the apartment in handcuffs on drug charges and molesting another girl. Indigo tells Nana after Sabrina calls. Nana makes Marcus call his mother whose upset but isn’t all that bothered about him going back to the A. She and her fiancé were going to put him in a all boy private school. So the pact is over and Indigo and Marcus head back to the A where they can resume their relationship.

My Thoughts: This reminded me of a couple of movies. It had elements of Soul Food (with Nana in the hospital for her diabetes. It had elements of The Player’s Club (the live-in boyfriend being attracted to and coming on to the cousin). It also had bits of Boyz N The Hood (the mother thinking the father did a good job raising the son but now that he was older the son should come back and leave with her). So firstly, the pact was STUPID! Great guys are so hard to find. If you have one why the hell would you wanna trade up? Indigo was the one who made the pact and while she may have met a lot of guys at the club, I betcha half of em was just trying to hit. Then it just irritates me HIGHLY how in this book (and the last book DEAL WITH IT) these teenage girls act like they can’t go a few weeks without either being loyal or worrying if their boyfriends will be loyal. In the last book, Tamika is only gone for a weekend and she’s wondering if Vance will cheat on her. If you have a boyfriend and you have to worry about you can’t be in his sight for a few days until he’s up on the next female then I’m sorry. That is NOT your boyfriend! And again here’s another book where there’s a lady with “a man” and he’s up on some other female and she’s standing there looking stupid and either defending him or just not saying A WORD! It makes no sense AT ALL! Another thing, I hate is when parents get a brand new partner and then just spring it on you like “Oh, and by the way..” YES, it’s happened to me before! Sometimes the daughter or son needs time to adjust to a new situation with the new person. This just is NOT COOL! I’m glad though that Marcus’s mom say that she couldn’t be a good parent *then* because down the line what if he would have stayed. That would have caused A LOT of resentment. But Marcus is a good one. I also know what it’s like to have someone listen to the first WRONG side they hear and not even wanna hear yours. Mostly this book tho was 90% events that took place during Indigo’s and Marcus’s summer and 10 percent plot. It also used a couple of basketball games as page fillers (which I never like when a book does)

Rating: 5 The moral being ladies KEEP WHAT U GOT IF U HAVE A GOOD THING and don’t play yourself by making RIDICULOUS pacts!

“The Pact” is a book about lovers finding their way back. Indigo and Marcus break up for their summer vacation so that they can be free, but all hell breaks loose when Indigo falls under the influence of her cousin and Marcus become intertwined in a lie saying that he’s a father. The two eventually find their way back to each other after indigo is molested by her cousins boyfriend. This book gives you all the feels and takes you through a roller coaster of emotions and even though it could’ve been written a little better, I definitely recommend

I never read a book that was as interesting than this book "The Pact". This book is about a young lady Indigo and young man Marcus they was very much in love with eath other. The summer time was coming in they both planed on going out of town with there family. Indigo had planed on making a pact of braking up with marcus over the summer than getting back together when the summer was over. Marcus was so in love with indigo in he never would have thought to brake up. Indigo wanted to have a pact to brake up over the summer because she said if they ran in to new people that they really like they would be able to be with them, in marcus ended up runing into some one in almost had sex with them but Indigo called his phone in a time of need in he came.Indigo thought if they dont run into anyone one when summer is over in school start back they would get back together. Marcus was so mad with Indigo thinking why would she want to brake up who is puting these things in her mind. Marcus said if they brake up aint no more getting back together because he thought that she was wrong for stating that. On the other hand Indigo thought that it was a great indea in it shows that she really love him, I think that indigo made a mistake about braking up with him over the summer. So the days go on in Indigo in marcus are in two different states.Indigo hangs out with her best cousin who is seventeen and lives with her boyfriend.Marcus mother want him to live with her permanently. Indigo and her cousin would be out to teen clubs in indigo felt so wanted she had been geting so many numbers she thought she never wanted to leave. Indigo wanted to be just like her cousin living with her boyfriend going to teen clubs in all that. Until one day indigo was spending a night at her cousin house from coming from the club they were so drunk from drinking all night. Indigo had a crash in couldnt drive home. Indigo cousin's boyfriend had liked indigo and he thought that she looked cute so he tried to feel on indigo why she was drunk and her cousin walked in on them. Indigo was so scared she told her cousin as she was walking in but her cousin didnt want to believe even though she saw the truth. Indigo sware up and down but her cousin didnt want to hear it so they got into it. Indigo was so heart broking her cousin had kicked her out in she never thought her cousin would do that to her and not believe her. Indigo calls marcus in said She needs him in marcus made it over there in no time. Marcus knocked on the door in beat up Indigo cousin boyfriend. In Indigo and marcus ended up back together and lived happy ever after. Marcus and his mother worked out some things and marcus would come in see her any time he can.

3)The pact
BY Monica Mckayahn
review by Teyonnia Ward

That's the deal Indigo Summer makes with her boyfriend, Marcus Carter. That way, they can both enjoy their vacations, no guilt, no questions asked. Not that Indigo isn't worried when Marcus heads to Texas to spend time with his estranged mother—kissing Marcus goodbye is hard enough, and who knows who'll be kissing him in Houston? But Indigo barely has time to think about her temporarily ex-boyfriend by the time she gets to Chicago. She's hanging out with her cool cousin, who lives alone at seventeen and has her own life—a life Indigo thought she wanted, until things get way out of hand. She needs Marcus, but he has his own thing going on…and his mother wants him to stay with her permanently.
4)A girl call indigo lives in altanta with her parents.alot of people knew indigo, indigo and marcus have knew each other for a long time and live right next door to each other.the drama about indigo is fun it will make you want to read the book over and over.
5)The book is about indigo and marcus indigo wanted to make this pact with marcus because they both was going away for the summer.indigo said to marcus we should brake up for the summer and what if we meet someone while we is gone marcus didint agree with it.
6)the book is drame because it was a couple of argument in the story.and indigo is and high school so drama is oing to follow her.
7)I love the book because its about high school.and indigo is the one making the book intersting.
8)"indigo fell on the floor like a brick","indigo was sweet like a candy"
9)I fell like im in high school when i read about indigo because she express her felling when she is down she never let no one come between her.

In the novel, The Pact, the author, Monica Mckayla has written a story so magnificent that when you begin reading, you will never put this book down. The story starts with two teenagers dating, but is going to separate states for the summer. Indigo Summer is a girl who is the love of Marcus's life. Indigo worries what will happen to their relationship during the summer. Marcus Cooper is the one guy who always had Indigo's back and will do anything to make her happy.
Before it's time for them to go their separate, Indigo indicates a pact. Indigo feels that they will be single for the summer and if they do not meet anyone, they will get back together when the summer is over. For Marcus, he does not like the idea, and is only thinking that Indigo is going to meet someone else. For Indigo, the prospect of being in Chicago for the summer is exciting. She gets to see her grandmother and have fun with her favorite older cousin that she always looked up to.
For Marcus, being in Texas is also good. He gets to see his mother and meet new friends. Even though everything seems good when they get there, situations began to challenge them as Marcus and Indigo goes through their summer. Marcus and Indigo find themselves needing each other when they face big problems that may change their lives.
I will recommend this book to anyone who likes books that deals with events that can possibly happen in real life. The Pact is a book filled with excitement and drama that will make you want to keep reading!

I have read this book for two days and have not had one complaint about it.Indigo went over to Chicago for the summer and her boyfrend went to Houston for the summer. They made this pact about how if or when they find somebody, that they would breakup before that happened.Marcus was hurt and did not even have a word to say after that. But whenever you need somebody, they are just a phonecall and plane ride away.

During Indigo's stay in Chicago,Her cousin Sabrina takes her to night clubs, but this night,Indigo will never forget. After the drinking, conversation, and grinding and dancing and the car accident,Indigo never looked back especially when her cousin was drunk till she could not drive. When Indigo's head hit the pillow she had a weird dream that Sabrina's boyfriend and baby daddy was feeling her up.When Indigo woke up,Dugan was all up in her personal space, kissing her and feeling her up.When she tried to scream,Dugan put his hand over her mouth, trying to take off her clothes and he pressed down on her hard trying to take off his pants. When Sabrina came out their room, she was shocked and got fed this bullshit story about how Indigo was liking him that time when they were at the bar-b-q the first time she came.Sabrina actually believed him and kicked Indigo out.Indigo never looked back.

My opinion is that whenever you see an older guy giving you a weird look,I would have done the same thing nevr look back because your situation can be a whole lot worse then the retell i just told you.My advice is to never grow up to fast.

The Pact by Monica McKayhan
The Pact by Monica McKayhan tells a story that most teens would enjoy or find it crazy. It’s about two teens, Indigo Summer and Marcus Carter. They have what you call a goodbye/hello relationship. If you’re asking me, I say it’s a romance novel with a touch of forgiveness.

Indigo and Marcus been going out for a while. Until, summer arrives and Indigo wants to break up and make a pact with Marcus. The pact is, when they leave for the summer if they find someone that they’ll break up for real when they get back. If they don’t find anyone else that they’ll come back and be together. Even though, a lot of stuff happened during the summer with both of them. Will Indigo and Marcus be able to reunite after what happened?

I really enjoyed this book because it relates a lot with some people in relationships that are long distance. There were fights, parties, and stress between the two because all they did was think of one another. At times, I just wanted to get in the book and give Indigo some advice. If you like sad/curious books about teens in love, then you should read this. My rating for this book is 5 out of 5 because it made me want to know what happened next. I really hope Monica McKayhan makes more books like that, she’s a good author.

I like this book because I can relate to the topic and make inferences. It's summer time and Indigo Summer and her boyfriend decides to make a pact and break up for the summer so they won't be tied down, so they can enjoy it. In my life I know alot of people who decided to end their relationships just to enjoy their breaks. Marcus goes to Houston to spend time with his mother, that he hasn't seen since he was younger, the only problem she wants him to move in with her. Indigo goes to Houston to spend time with her family and gets into trouble when she is hanging with her cousin. She is driving without a license and hits someone's car. Every teen makes a mistake and she did it since her cousin was intoxicated. When I read that, I thought I would do the same thing, I'd rather get in trouble than have a drunk drive and injure someone else. In the end Marcus and Indigo get back together, go home, and spend the rest of their summer break together. I love this book because alot of african teens can relate to this book that Monica Mckayhan wrote. The book has real life qualities and situations with consequences with a happy ending.

The Pact by Monica Mckayhan
The Pact is about a high school couple named Indigo and Markus. They were both leaving for the summer. Markus was spending the summer with his mom and Indigo was going to Chicago with her nana. Before they left for the summer, Indigo and Markus made a pact that since they won’t be with each other for the summer, maybe they should break up in case they meet someone new and they end up liking that person. If not then they will get back together at the end of the summer.

I liked the book a lot because it caught my attention I knew it was going to be a good book when I read the back cover of the book. The title made it seem like a good book too.

I would recommend it to my bestfriend.

In a way, what Indigo did was really smart, because there are alot of couples who stray away form the relationship when they are in two different states. Distant realtionships do not work out 80% of the time. It was pretty romantic when Indigo and Marcus still had that strong love toward each other. They have both realized that true love conquers all aspects and situations.

This was a very interesting book that i have read. This book was about a teenage couple that made a certain pact during the summer about breaking up then getting back together because they were going separate ways but then decided they needed each other and were very happy with each other, so the pact changed from breaking up to staying together forever.
