Portland Storm #1-3

Portland Storm: The First Period

Rate this book
A boxed set of three novels and a novella in the Portland Storm hockey romance series by USA Today bestselling author Catherine Gayle.

BREAKAWAY

Portland Storm captain Eric “Zee” Zellinger knows how to get the job done, but leading his once elite team to victory is fast becoming a losing battle. He can’t lose focus now—not with his career on the line. But when his best friend’s little sister makes him an offer he can’t refuse, Eric could lose the drive the team relies on from their captain.

Still in a downward spiral after a life-altering event in college, Dana Campbell is desperate to try anything to break away from the horror of that fateful night—even enlisting the help of the only man she trusts completely.

No matter how irresistible she is or how tempting the offer, Eric might not be able to cross that line—especially with the team’s chance at the playoffs on the line. Now, Eric has to take one last shot, but will he choose Dana’s Breakaway chance at happiness or the move that could secure his career?

ON THE FLY

Being sidelined for far too long due to injuries, Portland Storm player Brenden “Soupy” Campbell is ready to take his career to the next level and make his new position on the team stick. After he meets the general manager’s cute new assistant, Brenden knows he’s right where he’s supposed to be.

Determined to change things up On the Fly and establish a future for herself and her children, Rachel Shaw jumps at the opportunity to work for the Storm. She’s not going to let anything—or anyone—get in her way, especially not a sexy and overly cocky hockey star.

But when Brenden pulls out all the stops and turns on the charm, Rachel refuses to make the same mistake twice. Now, it’s up to Brenden to cement his spot—both on the team and in Rachel’s heart.

TAKING A SHOT

Rising hockey star Jamie Babcock is ready to take the most important shot of his life—and this time, it’s not on the ice. Dating his teammate’s daughter might be riskier than going head to head with one of the Portland Storm’s rivals. But time is running out—it’s now or never.

High school senior Katie Weber knows all too well the woes of adolescence, but throw in a leukemia diagnosis, and her life just got a lot more complicated. With prom looming and a shiny bald head to contend with, Katie might sit at home on the most important night of her potentially very short life. Unless Jamie Babcock, her ultimate crush, finally makes the move she’s been praying for. But that’s not the only miracle she needs.

Now Jamie must show Katie just how important she is and how hard she must fight.

Before it’s too late…

LIGHT THE LAMP

Hockey star Liam Kallen lost his scoring touch when his wife died. Still broken up over her loss, Liam’s darkness overpowers him, but his new team—the Portland Storm—needs him. A chance meeting brings him face to face with Noelle Payne, the most positive and upbeat woman he’s ever met, and his darkness begins to fade.

There’s never been a challenge that Noelle can’t conquer. Brightside optimist to a fault, Noelle refuses to succumb to the luxurious life Liam can give her, as she longs to find deeper meaning and purpose in her life. Now it’s up to Liam to open up and show her that she’s the light he’s needed all along—giving her the greatest purpose of all. He might have saved her, but can Noelle be the light that saves him?

Oh my, what a bundle of a deal I got for these amazing stories!!! I am absolutely addicted to the Portland Storm men now....all the books have laughter, romance, emotional and serious topics, and a family made up of so many wonderful and loyal characters. Every single story touched me. But the one that got me the most....brought me to tears at least a few times yetserday....is Katie's story. And oh how I have fallen in love with Jamie, aka Babs, throughout all the books but none more than in Taking A Shot. Holy hell did that break my heart and bring on such strong intense sadness, emotion and adoring love. I will continue to read each book in this series but absolutely counting down til I get my hands on Katie and Jamie's full book!!!

28 hours for a single credit! Stories are alternating POVs, with a single narrator. (FYI - book 1 originally had another narrator & the reviews were not good. Clark re-recorded it.)

Breakaway: This is a SLOOOOOOW burn in a lot of ways. Fundamentally, because Dana is trying to recover from a sexual assault that occurred when she was in college. She seeks out Eric "Zee" Zellinger's help. He's her brother's best friend and someone she's known her whole life and the only man she feels she can remotely trust.

This is an emotionally difficult book to experience. Not only from Dana's POV, but also Eric's and to a smaller degree the others in their lives. In some respects this length of time is reflective of what it can take for some victims to recover (if they ever do) and the many small steps that feel insurmountable to them. It can make the book feel like it's dragging at times, but I prefer that to books that gloss over such heavy subject matter.

On The Fly: This is another slow burn as Brenden (Soupy) tries to win over wary single-mom Rachel. Another book that deals with sexual assault (this time of a minor) in a realistic way without being overly graphic. Though listeners sensitive to that subject may still find it to be too much as it’s impact is a major part of the story line.

Taking a Shot: Sweet novella giving us more insight into Jamie & Katie as they attend her senior prom. As Katie is still in high school, the steam is no more than a kiss. Also, Jamie & Katie's story continues throughout the the other books and they don't get their HEA until book 7, Dropping The Gloves.

Light the Lamp: This is my least favorite book of the series and the one I usually skip when rereading as I struggle both to connect with the main characters and in finding their romance believable. Noelle borders on being psychic/mystic/or some inconsistently defined supernatural empath. It just doesn't fit with the tone of the series or other characters. She's homeless and the reasons are ridiculously non-existent other than in some kind of construct in her mind.

This is also INSTA relationship, living together, etc with no foundation for any kind of meaningful bond between Liam & Noelle. The majority of the book takes place in a week and I just don't feel like Gayle justified Liam's feelings/actions or gives any reason to be confident these two have what it takes to make it last.

Overall: Gayle immerses listeners with the Portland Storm players and organization. I like how she continues to give regular insight into a lot of the players throughout the books. I admit, all I know about hockey is from romance novels - but her descriptions seem thorough while still engaging.

This is my first experience with Angel Clark. It took me a bit to get used to her male speaking voices (they sometimes come off a bit "squeaky"), but overall I enjoyed the production and her narration in the first book. For “On The Fly” Clark lacked the finesse she showed in the first book. The differentiation between character voices was minimal. Also, Rachel is described as having a Southern (Texas) accent and Clark only used it if the accent was immediately mentioned in the text or vaguely in sentences that used “y’all” or talked about Rachel’s time living there. She missed the mark to bring some individuality to these characters. Her narration improves as the series continues and overall it's enjoyable.

4 stars

I really enjoyed the first three books. The fourth was ok just not fond of the heroine. This worked for my hockey state of mind. Realistic and perfect balance of hockey and romance. I love their friendships within the team as well. Catherine Gayle has a very enjoyable writing style that will reel you in.

Long

The stories were fine, but long and drawn out. The women in these stories all pushed away a great guy that treated them wonderful, which made no sense. By the last book I couldn't read anymore. The game sequences were meaningless to someone who knows nothing about hockey and there were a bunch.

These stories cover some very difficult topics, and may be possible emotional and traumatic triggers for some people. However, the author is very clear about this and warns readers ahead of time. Breakaway and On the Fly are my favorite from this collection. I didn't really care much for the other two stories. I admire the way Catherine seems to understand the kind of trauma these women have been through and is able to write about it. In Breakaway, Dana has endured a terrible, vicious and vile attack and suffered severely from PTSD because of it. To help her make that next step in reclaiming her life, she asked her brother's best friend for help, which is no surprise since Eric had been apart of Dana's and Brendan's life since they were kids.

What I can't get over is her brother's reaction. 🤨 Initially, I understand where he may be a little wary. But even after understanding what she was trying to accomplish, I couldn't wrap my head around Brendan's animosity and cold shoulder towards his best friend Eric, aka Zee. Didn't he want his sister to get better? No matter how the author tried to write it where I could understand Brendan's anger, it just went on for too long. I found myself wanting to knock Brendan upside the head for some of his behavior. I admired Eric, though, for risking his friendship to help Dana. She needed someone she could trust, and he was THAT guy. He was so understanding and patient with her. Even though the backstory is very traumatic, I think it was well-written.

On the Fly is Brendan's story. This, too, had a backstory in a very traumatic event, but involved a child. Again, Catherine handled it very well, and I liked her approach on this subject. My heart went out to the child, but the story wasn't too morbid; especially since the events happen before the story begins. I think if I had to read it take place, I might have felt a little uncomfortable. Again, this was about reclaiming your power and healing. Brendan was just as understanding and patient with Rachel as his friend, Zee was with his sister, Dana in the previous book. Even though Brendan was still being a minor butthead about Zee's and Dana's relationship, he comes off as a really good guy. He, along with Babs, and the hockey team family, show Rachel that there are still good people in the world who will protect you, and your children.

The other two stories in this collection were just okay for me. I adored Babs, and again the author covers an emotional topic with grace. What Katie suffered through was sad and painful. I guess because the two main characters are so young, they came off as a little immature, and this was not quite my cup of tea. Others may like this story though. In Light the Lamp, the heroine, Noelle, does a lot of...umm...not so smart things. I just couldn't deal with her. Liam was a nice enough guy.

The author does a great job infusing sports in the storyline without making it boring. That's a plus.

So this Covid-19 pandemic during the year 2020 has me re-reading a lot. This is my 2nd re-read of this series since March. I need to be with characters I love and stories I know turn out with a HEA even if sometimes getting there is rough.

This set gets a strong 4.5 stars from me:

Breakaway 4.5 stars - Brother's best friend's litttle sister - Dana was raped 8 years prior to this story and Zee is her brother Brenden's best friend and teammate. Dana wants to be loved, she wants to be have a man in her life but 8 years later she still is repulsed by a man's touch. She asks Zee to help her get over that fear. This wasn't an easy story, they both had to get past some big stumbling blocks, but it was written with care and executed well. When I first read this book Catherine Gayle was a new to me author and I knew we'd have a long relationship together.

On the Fly 4.5 stars - Brenden wasn't my favorite person going into this book, but pretty quickly I began to see that in the first book his attitude was all about his worry for his sister. In this book he meets Rachel who will soon be the administrative assistant for the team's manager Jim Sutter. Rachel has two kids who she moved cross country with after an incident that shattered her trust of everyone. I really enjoyed watching Brenden break down her walls and her realize there are good people in the world.

Taking a Shot (novella) 5 stars - Although short this is probably one of my favorite books in the series. Jamie Babcock (Babs) who we saw in the first two books as a very young (18 yo) rookie in book 1 asks Katie Webber (one of his teammate's daughter) who is undergoing treatment for Lukemia to her prom. I have goose bumps writing about this book even though I've read it so many times. The emotion, the love these two have for one another even without ever even dating is so obvious and this one will bring tears to your eyes. Love it so much.

Light the Lamp 4 stars - Probably my least favorite book in the series and I've analyzed why for years now. I think part is because we really didn't know Liam at all before this book started or his pain from losing his wife. Noelle was also a new character and one that drove me absolutely nuts in her inability to take help from people who were more than willing and able to give it to her. She needlessly put herself in danger and that is one thing that drives me crazy about heroines in books. It worked out, not easily, but it did and I did enjoy it but not as much as the other books in this series.

OMG Book 1 Break Away: we see Dana Campbell & Captain of the Portland Storm, Ice Hockey team Eric Zellinger, who's her older brother Brenden “Soupy”'s best friend. And heck she went something deep, dramatic, NOT, SOMETHING ANYONE WOULD WANT TO GO THROUGH. And she WANTS/NEEDS Erick to help her past, her past, even though her might ONLY SEE her like a disaster. Emotional
Book 2 On The Fly: Emotional storyline, is WORSE than Dana's one, where we meet Single Mum of 2 Rachel Shaw, who turns up at the Storm Company for the new personal assistant to the General Manager of the Storm. And it's in seconds of her arriving that Brenden 'Soupy' Campbell wants her, then after getting the job, she gets a condo straight next door to Soupy. And the beginning of the story we hear, her heartbreaking reason of moving to Portland from Texas. Beautiful with some humorous episodes along that pull of the heartstrings.
Book 3 Taking a Shot: This one is shorter as it's where we see a different emotional story but this is to do with, the cute, sexy Jamie Babcock & the one girl he dreams of & sees constantly, his team mate Webber's High School Senior Katie, where we see that he's going to be able to GET that 1 date with her & that date is being her date to her Prom & heck that was a beautiful date, if ever there's one. Can't wait to see more of what may come during the rest of the serious, which I'm sure there will be.
Book 4 Light This Lamp: 1 little negative on this his book is that I feel like that Liam Kallan doesn't sound as if he's Swedish & he's only been in Portland just over a couple of weeks, so they don't know much about him except that his Wife Liv had a horrific accident. And when he came across Noelle, she seems like she's in a similar position, had he felt he had to get her away from that situation. Noelle though is such a person who see's good & light in everyone & everything that happens, NO MATTER how dire & traumatic a situation is.

THIS WAS MY FIRST PIECE OF WORK THAT I HAVE READ BY CATHERINE GAYLE & I LOVE THESE ALPHA MALES & THE WOMEN WHO HAVE AREAS WHERE THERE'S DEEP TRAUMA

3.5 stars for this box set

The first 2 books in this were brilliant! I adored Dana and Zee’s book so much - Zee is just an amazing guy with so much love and patience, who is perfect for Dana. Dana is so brave in her determination to

overcome her demons and I loved how she only trusted Zee to be able to help her. Their story is heartbreaking yet so tender, so sensual and so engrossing that I couldn’t stop reading. On its own merit, I give Breakaway 5/5 stars.
On The Fly was also very good. This is Soupy (Dana’s brother) and Rachel’s story. Again this has some heartbreaking elements in the story but Soupy is tremendously patient and so determined that Rachel didn’t stand a chance! I loved how this book cemented in the fact the Portland Storm are essentially one big, happy family and everyone comes together for whoever is in need. I would rate On The Fly 4/5 stars, on its own merit.
By the time I got to Taking A Shot, I was chomping at the bit to read about Babs and Katie but ... it is just a really short story - a prequel, one could assume! I am bitterly disappointed and feel a bit let down as I was expecting 4 full length books. I can only presume that their story continues in a different book, hopefully a bit longer and more fulfilling than Taking A Shot. I did enjoy the glimpse we get into Babs and Katie’s relationship though.
Light The Lamp was my least favorite. I loved Kally - to recover from his losses and manage to be so giving? He is a beautiful character! Noelle, however, just frustrated me no end. While I do get that she wants Kally to open up to her completely, her constant refusal to accept his help, or anyone else’s, went on for far too long and became ridiculous. She did some really stupid things and I could not connect with her way of thinking at all. At best, I would give this book a 3/5 on its own merit.

Book 1 = 5*
The first time I read the book 2 years ago, I was emotionally tired because this book presents a heavy issue. The second reading.. this book becomes one of my favorites and possibly the best for me. Everything is just sweet, slow, and steady. The story brings us towards healing from such a traumatic experience. Dana and Zee have amazing chemistry and both understand each other well.

Book 2 = 5*
Another story that I enjoy. Soupy who has been through Dana's past experience is like a perfect match for Rachel. The family dynamic is just funny in this story! Also, the team is getting stronger on ice. The sense of belonging as the Storm family has started to shape among the players and their significant others, and this makes me want more of them.

Book 2.5 = 5*
A novella that brings you tears. I just love how Soupy and Zee help Babs to talk with Katie! I was so tempted to jump to their own book (Book 7), but I held myself back.

Book 3 = Now it's 1* but I DNF
I only read until chapter 7 and had difficulties accepting Noelle. I'll probably read this book again to make an objective review.

My first ever sports themed romance book, by one of my newest favorite author.
In this book, you will get four books to read from the start of this series.
I admit, that I am not a huge sports fan, but one of the few sports that I do love is ice hockey.
However, while I still love hockey, in particular the Philadelphia Flyers, which my boyfriend at the time, who is my husband, was a totally Flyer nut. I do wish that the teams could play the way they used to be able to play. Fighting was such a huge part of the game, and believe me, the fans absolutely loved it! They changed a bunch of the rules, particularly regarding fighting. I always thought it just made the game more exciting.
But regardless of my feelings regarding all the new rules that were put in place, hockey is an extremely fast moving game, and so very exciting.
Give this author a read, I think that you will like the series as much as so many others have.

Wasted potential

Ok so this is a four book box set, right? So I read the first book Breakaway and somehow pushed through excruciatingly. Which is I did not read the other three. So Dana was raped in college and sexual therapist suggested she see a sexual surrogate to gain her control and sexuality back. The book started promising enough but then fell flat. The insistence need the author felt to write about the hockey scenes and to mention the terminology was exhausting. Then there was the whole repetitive writing. You get panic attacks m, you think he loves you like a kid sister, they love each other, continuous need to mention the rape, Babs so innocent and droning inner monologue. Deleting!!

Emotional roller coaster

Wow what a ride you will have when you read this set of books. Ms. Gayle is an outstanding author who sucks you into her books and doesn’t want to let you go. So much emotion in this set I was crying, laughing, and cheering for the home team every step of the way. Not your normal HEA until you shed a bucket of tears with the characters. One of the best hockey romance series that I have read ever. This is one you don’t want to miss. Happy reading.

This is a great series. It is well written and the characters are engaging and wiggle their way into your hearts and the next thing you know... you're sucked in and completely invested in these books and series... waiting for the next to come out. This is an excellent "starter" set for those who haven't bought the stand alone books or something for the avid collector. Either way, this is a must have for any fans of contemporary romance with the sports sub theme.

Happy Reading...enjoy!

I found this series on sale in the Amazon Kindle store and thought I'd give it a shot. It turned out to be a fantastic little series so far. The third book was quite short, more like a set of deleted scenes, but it helped to bridge the gap between books 2 and 4. My favorite was the first book, Breakaway. I can't wait to find more books in the series. The novellas were actually quite long, but I was still able to finish each under 4 hours.

You do need at least rudimentary knowledge of hockey to read the books. There are a lot of sections where it focuses on the male lead and what he is doing in the game, so the reader needs to understand a little of the game to be able to follow.

One thing I did really like was the fact the novellas only had a couple sex scenes in each. They are not overrun with them. Mostly it focuses on the emotional development and hardships of the couple instead of the sex, which is fantastic in my opinion. The author does a phenomenal job portraying the inner turmoil and true emotions of her characters in a way I rarely see. The strong emotions she digs into fascinate me.

Breakaway - Book 1

I absolutely loved this book. It follows the story of Dana and Eric. Dana and Eric grew up together, and both played hockey. Eric left with Dana's brother, Brenden, to go to college and Dana went to a different college. Dana was a star hockey player on her college team until she was gang raped after a game by a group of rival fans. She decided after seven years of counseling, she needed someone she trusted to help her learn how to deal with intimacy again and aid her in conquering her panic attacks. Eric is not at all happy with the idea but has been in love with her for years, so he gives in and agrees to help her.

Anyone who suffers from panic attacks, or survived rape or abuse will be able to relate very strongly with Dana. Her portrayal is amazingly realistic to what panic attacks are like and how hard it is to heal from sexual violence. As an abuse survivor, I was able to relate to her extremely well and found the book to be a great example of what a loving, healing relationship can do. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romance or is struggling to recover from sexual violence.

On the Fly - Book 2

After the first book, I shouldn't have been surprised to find the second book as emotionally strong and tangled. You follow the story of Brenden and Rachel. Brenden is Dana's brother and has just been called up from the minor league. He is struggling with trying to prove he deserves to be in the major league and also with the relationship that has developed between Eric and Dana. Rachel is running from her husband who she found out and successfully convicted of abusing her daughter. Throughout the book she struggles a lot with trust, overprotectiveness, and insecurity over her growing feelings for Brenden. An added obstacle is her learning the ropes of her new job - secretary for the Portland Storm General Manager, taking over for the retiring Martha.

It was endearing to see these two people slowly cross the obstacles in front of them and find each other, in particular how they became a family with Rachel's two children. You also get to learn more about the other team members and begin to really get a feel for the different personalities. The only thing I didn't particularly like was how abruptly it ended. But that is really my only complaint. Other than that, I thought it was a brilliantlyl written work.

Taking a Shot - Book 3

This is actually considered an in-between novella. It is just a short snippet, very quick, that helps segue between On the Fly and Light the Lamp. It is the story of Jamie "Babs" Babcock taking Katie to her prom. I don't want to give away something that happens in On the Fly, but I will say it is important that she is able to go. I thought it was a great way to portray a small development between these two characters, as their love story has been woven through each book so far. However, it was very quick and I hoped for more. It makes sense to read it, but I cannot wait for their actual full-length novella to come out next week.

Light the Lamp - Book 4

This is another book I greatly enjoyed. The book follows Liam and Noelle. Liam is a widower who is still grieving for his wife who was hit by a drunk driver while she was trying to change a tire. He finds Noelle on the highway, trying to fix her car, and insisted on taking her somewhere safe until the car cooled down. He later finds out she is homeless and jobless and insists she go home with him. The story unfolds as the fall in love and struggle to become emotionally close. You also learn about Liam's Light the Lamp foundation that helps addicts begin to put their life back together.

It is a very emotionally charged book. I found I was very able to relate to Liam. His struggles to deal with the death of his wife and the love he is developing for a new woman are strong and realistic. I had a harder time relating to Noelle, but she is so sweet and genuine you have to like her. Her emotions do come through very strongly as well, especially with her fighting to maintain her independence and need to make the world a better place.

She made me a hockey fan...

I'm not one who can wrap my head around a lot of different sports, but I'm going to have to figure out hockey now.
This box set was definitely a page turner. I didn't want to stop once I got started. There are several traumatic stressors in this set, but the hard honesty and dignity this author showed was a hat trick.
Happy reading : )

I didn't like none of the books. I thought it was really boring. The story line for all the books are stupid. I really tried liking them but nope. I thought maybe they aren't all bad but they are. I feel for saying but I just really didn't like them.

This collection of the first 3.5 novels of the Portland Storm family is absolutely fabulous.
An introduction to many of the players by name at least and more in-depth for others.
Full of emotion - laughter, tears and many others.
I’ve learnt much about hockey just from the scenes depicted.

Good read

I read the set on vacation. I could not put it down. It is not trashy but good romance. Enjoy
