---About Ladies in Danger series--- This series is about the adventures of the marquess of Southgate named simply as “South” as he unravels the mysteries of the regency era.
---Plot Sypnosis--- Miss Sophie Tennant was a girl of nineteen years of age, of sweet, if a bit sickly disposition, and golden curls. She had been confined to her invalid’s chair since her childhood after a bad fall. Her health had deteriorated rapidly following her parents’ deaths, and she’d hardly risen from it since.
Sophie was waiting for her ladies’ maid to wheel her to her bedchamber, when she screamed. In front of her she sees a dead body, white and pale in the candlelight. She reaches out a hand and touches its cheek.
It’s hard like stone to the touch, but it’s warm too, as though it hasn’t been dead for a long time. She trembled. In the darkness, the statue whispered the word ‘Aphrodite’.
It' s a simple mystery. The writing is a bit awkward in places but overall it average book, nothing too wrong or too great. I didn't understand the point of introducing the duke so late in the book. It was almost as if the author decided there needed to be one more possible suspect so lets put in a duke. This is ideal if you want an innocuous read, like watching a home decorating show. It engages your mind for a little while but it doesn't stir up much emotion, good or bad.
Sophie Tennant is an young invalid who hasn't much hope of finding a suitor until an earl starts calling on her. He brings along a friend to meet with her and the friend discovers that Sophie's seeing ghosts may actually be a murder plot. The story was pretty silly and very rushed.
This was a quick read with an interesting mystery.
I would have enjoyed this more if the writing had been The writing seemed a little forced. The characters said things in a way that was either not realistic or in a way that wasn't natural.
The narrator had a nice commanding voice, but did make the unnatural dialogue sound more forced.

Very predictable story. Young invalided heiress sees ghosts, amateur detective suspects murder plot, several attempts are made, but none successful, wrong man imprisoned etc etc. Has been done before, and better at that. Rushed ending. Good thing the book only lasts two and a half hours. Bland and sometimes boring narration. Got the feeling the narrator didn't like the story either....
