Ben Scarrett spends his days drinking coffee and writing analyses of the phenomena known as 'The Appearances'. That is until his reports cross the desk of a clandestine military agency fighting an undeclared war against an unknown enemy.
Pulled from behind his desk, and partnered with Joanne Kramer, Ben finds himself in a desperate race to save the life of ten-year-old Emily DeForrest.
A girl who may just be the key to keeping the Gates of Hell locked.
Neil Carstairs lives and works in Worcester, UK. He writes and self-publishes novels that fall mainly in the Supernatural Thriller genre but his short work covers the full range of Speculative Fiction.
His next release comes out on 15th December 2020 and is a spin-off from his Scarrett & Kramer adventure - The Ring of Athreal.
His Scarrett & Kramer series feature #1 The Creator, #2 The Anomaly, #3 The Tomb, and #4 The Rising.
Standalone novels The Other Side of Winter, Hinterland, and The Chamber are also available along with a number of anthologies that feature one of his short stories
This supernatural thriller was a terrific read. Author Neil Carstairs takes you on dizzying twists and turns, from secret military installations being savaged by alien creatures described down to the last wonderfully chilling detail to a frantic car ride across isolated rural America where a mother and daughter understand nowhere is truly safe and are being hunted at every turn.
Wonderfully atmospheric and brilliantly paced, as the story is slowly revealed, we learn analyst Ben Scarrett has been coming up with theories to explain a rash of unexplainable “appearances” of supernatural creatures who slaughter everything in their path. Joanne Kramer is the Army officer tasked with helping him—after having witnessed the slaughter of her entire unit in a scene early in the book that will have you on the edge of your seat. Some hints at a romance subplot between these two, which are sure to play out more in upcoming books.
Together they’re trying to get to 10-year-old Emily, a pre-cognitive psychic whose ability to predict the attacks threatens the plans of the demon wreaking havoc on mankind and could hold the key to saving the world. The author has a knack for writing good military and action scenes which were one of my favorite aspects of the novel. This was twisty and brilliantly plotted. Everything is building up to a stunning battle royale with angels and demons as good battles evil—and you have no idea how things will turn out. A thrilling ride!
Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.
Holy, crazy, exciting, mind-blowing ride, Batman! My eyeballs are all dry from being superglued to the freakin' pages. For reals.
What I loved:
Lemme start by saying that I don't normally read paranormal thrillers but...
If every other book in the genre is like this? Hook it straight to my veins, baby! You can pump me full of this stuff any day of the week!! But, anyhoo, I'd better stop gushing and at least make an effort to say something insightful-ish, eh? Man-oh-man, where do I even start...
The story. Incredibly well-written, perfectly paced, and bursting at the seams with twists and turns. Not to mention, I have a not-so-secret soft spot for violence and gore...
...and my blood-hungry beast was satiated in a single sitting. Actually, no. I lied. Gimme more. More, more, more.
The characters. Likable, believable, and best of all? I "felt" them every step of the way. Ben and (Joanne) Kramer? I adored them to pieces! As individual characters, they were developed to the max. As a team, the dynamic between them was simply amazing. AH-MAH-ZING. In fact, the author handled his entire cast of characters with great skill.
The smidgen of romance.
Dear Mr Carstairs,
Sincerely, Ann
What left me wanting:
Umm, is this a trick question?
Final thoughts:
HIGHLY recommend to lovers of paranormal thrillers and people who breathe. Go read it. Now.
I had the pleasure of beta reading this latest book from Neil Carstairs. A desk jockey is thrown into a world of violence and horror he's only seen through a screen and on paper. His reputation of having an 'open mind' is severely tested as monsters come alive and he fights alongside military personnel to stop a threat which could end life as we know it. Dead creatures out of nightmares stalk the world and children on both sides of the Atlantic hold the key to the defeat of an ages old evil. Bloody and violent, a large cast of characters fight and many pay the ultimate price for their stand against the darkness. Well written and gritty, this book shows all sides of human characteristics, from love and sacrifice, to courage, hope and fear. if you like your supernatural horror with a side dish of heroics and just a smudge of romance, try this one.
I'll be back... Sorry I posted this days ago and never came back. So here I am, back. Having read the second book in this trilogy first, I will say I was ahead of most people in terms of the characters and what not. I already knew whom the main players were so it was nice to find out where these individuals originated from and how their respective relationships came to be. Much violence is contained in this book and the author does have a very vivid grasp in my opinion of the military and military hardware. I also enjoyed the presence of a strong female lead here in this series, yet this book there really is a few of them. Unfortunately they do not all survive what comes to pass, yet there is also a softer side to the story with the presence of the children. I've got you curious now don't I? A very well written and fast paced read set mostly in England. I found it interesting myself with the little snippets from a geography standpoint, about the Canadian and American locations and the accuracy portrayed being from that area. Definitely recommended. and I shall read the third book in the series.
The Creator is a fine blend of fantasy and reality that blurs together to form a very enjoyable novel. The author is an expert at using his obvious military knowledge to lend credence to all the aircraft and weaponry utilized by the characters, and at times I became so immersed in his tale that I felt as if I was reading about true missions performed by special forces warriors. However, instead of focusing only on conflicts with physical weapons, Carstairs does a nice job of incorporating mental gifts into his battles with clairvoyant individuals who are highly prized (and sought after) for their talents. Besides being a skilled writer of conflict, the author has a knack for adding an enjoyable touch of romantic excitement to his book through the relationship of the lead characters Ben and Kramer. The richly described characters and imaginative plot rounds his book into a well-done work that will leave you hoping the individuals you bond to will survive their final conflict, and live on to expand their relationship in his sure-to-be artful sequel.
This book was very cleanly written and easy to follow. Most of the characters were likable. Towards the end, I had a little trouble following the narrative. There are several characters in special ops that were just given the name Delta and a number. We don't learn much about them and towards the end of the novel, their death scene was quite graphically written. I wasn't sure if the intent was for me to care about these characters or not since I wasn't given much background on them, but their deaths were quite on display. The writing got a little muddled towards the end with the big battle and I actually had to go back a few pages because I didn't realize a major character had died.
If you enjoy paranormal books with a lot of military references, I think you would really enjoy this, as the book is fast paced and the attention to detail with the military references are highly detailed
I just finished The Creator by Neil Carstairs and ... DAMN! This book has everything I like - action, characters I cared about and rooted for, a little romance and monsters! At the heart of it The Creator is a really great paranormal story. It crosses the gender line, as it would appeal to men or women. The military procedures were just detailed enough to give it authenticity but not so detailed as to overwhelm the reader. I'll be following Scarrett & Kramer on their next adventure soon!
This book was AMAZING. It drew me in from the very first page and was incredibly difficult to put down. Neil is a true master of his craft and knows how to keep you glued to the book! The pace is perfect. Although it was a longer book, it never felt that way. It was full of action and there was always something going on drawing you further into the story. The plot is intriguing and keeps you guessing. It has well developed twists in the story.
Ben is a character you can relate to, one who matches well with Joanne. These 2 work persistently to unravel the mystery they are faced. There are a lot of additional people who add beautifully to the book. The cast really plays well of each other and completes this book.
The ending was complete, but I wouldn't mind if Neil would make this into a story. I would be the first one who would buy them! This is definitely an author I will add to my list to look out for more books in the future! He writes extremely well. I truly loved this book and could see it turn into a movie.
I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)
I was allowed by the author to read this book free for an honest review. This was a truly awesome story. It was scary and you worried about the characters. Bright lights rings would appear and monsters would come through and slaughter everything. The US has a secret military base trying to solve the mystery of who is doing this, why they are doing it and where the power source is. Ben Scarett is an analyst with the CIA who is sent to the base to analyze the gathered information. He meets Joanne Krammer who has seen the creatures. Psychics are also being gathered to help find answers. Emily and Conner are two 10 year olds that can predict or see the future. Along the way others come and go through the story. Until a climactic end. This well worth buying. It's just an exciting read
An unputdownable action-packed paranormal thriller.
Fantastic book, never knew quite where it was going, but what a journey!
Agency analyst, Ben Scarrett is plucked from his safe and remote position behind a desk and thrust into the confusing clandestine world that Captain Joanne Kramer inhabits. Let the adventure begin ...
Well crafted story with realistic, likeable characters, action and suspense aplenty and some utterly intriguing twists.
Highly recommended.
I received an ARC copy from the author in return for an honest review. Subsequently purchased my own copy so that I may reread it guilt free as it's now firmly on my favourites shelf which I frequently return to!
This hit the ground running! I mean those creatures were something else at the start. As a fan of horror, I was pulled right into that aspect. While this has gruesome parts that are delicious, I'd say it has a broader appeal as it straddles several genres. A sci-fi, para-military thriller with creative baddies that are as epic as the action sequences they inhabit.
Making the intensity wrap you even tighter are the characters, because they are so well written you deeply care about them. After you deeply care about them, you realize they are walking in that gruesome world you are loving... and your grip tightens, your heartbeat picks up and you don't stop reading until the end.
I'm excited to see there are already four books in this series, because I need more. If you enjoy your horror with story and heart you'll love this.
The Creator is English author Neil Carstairs's opening volume in the Scarrett and Kramer series. A mash up of the thriller and horror genres, with a good dose of military action thrown in for good measure. The story and action sequences are great; Mr Carstairs's military knowledge not so much. A Staff Sergeant in the Paras? I don't think so. And as a Colour Sergeant, he'd be referred to as, 'Colour' and not as Sarge! Minor quibbles but enough to wrench one out of the story. And a very good story it is too. Featuring demons and dinosaurs and dead men walking - and shooting - amongst other delights. I enjoyed this book, despite the inaccuracies, and am eagerly looking forward to book two.
A great book that leaves questions even as you get to the last page. Two people, different backgrounds, but similar skills bond in the task of trying to save first random people, then specific people, then themselves, and finally the world. Adds in military action, psychic phenomena, special ops, demons, and more.
I love how the story is narrated at a fast pace and detailed at the same time. A lot of this gs happened and I did not get bored for a second. The action sequence are very well organized and the end was perfect. The relationship between the main characters could have been defines better. It was kind of a rollercoaster. It is worth the time.
This was a pick up ....... . Put down kind of book. The characters were great. I enjoyed most of the exciting circumstances that were occurring. Most were very demanding of attention and kept you wandering what was hoping to happen next.
If you are into thrill rides and late night just can't put the book down then run and get this book. I just finished the last 60 pages at 2:30 AM. I could not put it down. I am now buying the next book in the series. Five out of five stars.
The Creator grabbed my attention for in the first few pages and did not let me go until I got to the satisfying conclusion.
The book is set in the US and the UK, which I related to as I have lived in both. I felt that the characters were interesting, consistent and well developed. I particularly liked the interactions between Joanne a tough, beautiful agent and Ben the new agent on the block.
The plot was solid and revolved around the appearance of monsters seemingly out of thin air to wreak havoc and a secret government agency set up to deal with such occurrences.
I found “The Creator” to be an enjoyable and thrilling novel.
In The Creator, Neil Carstairs has written a fast-paced and enjoyable paranormal thriller.
Ben Scarrett, a desk-bound analyst joins forces with a tough-as-nails soldier Joanne Kramer to investigate a number of gruesome supernatural occurrences. Together with a small team of psychically gifted individuals (including children) and teams of elite soldiers, this assorted crew tries to combat an evil that has reawakened.
While The Creator is certainly action-packed, it also features some romance and light-hearted moments. These elements serve as a welcome counterpoint to the mayhem and carnage that is being inflicted on the world. The tension builds up nicely to the final climax, which is effectively described from multiple points of view.
Even the peripheral characters are fully realized without being bogged down with unnecessary details.
What most impressed me about The Creator was the clean, assured writing style and the masterful sense of pacing. This was a page-turner and done in such a way that I was drawn in without having to remind myself to suspend disbelief. The story doesn't spare the good guys, which is refreshing and perhaps contributed to the "realism". That said, the body count is very high, and as a reader I was sometimes dismayed when a key character had to be sacrificed. In the end though, these sacrifices made the story all the more more poignant.
The end of the story hints at the possibility of more to come, and I sincerely hope that the author takes the plunge.
This is an intense and thrilling story, very well-written and perfectly paced.
Ben Scarrett teams up with Joanne Kramer, the badass survivor of a recent battle with some of the scariest creatures you can imagine, as they try to unravel the mystery of strange appearances occurring around the globe. And the deaths that follow.
The world and all of humanity is in danger.
Throw in some witty dialogue, complex character development, all filled with action and emotion - you have a plot line that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat throughout the journey.
Carstairs begins by pulling you into the action right away, the violence and fear and death surround you as you are immersed in a world so real, and so frightening. His characters carry you on an exciting journey through the investigation into the mystery of the appearances, sometimes light-hearted and playful, other times dark and deadly. The characters and the story run the gamut of human emotion, but don't get sappy or boring. This story is put together very well, a supernatural thriller that contains a bit of everything.
A beautiful genre-bending piece that incorporates everything you are looking for in an enjoyable read. Invest some time in this story. After my first experience with this author, I cannot wait to get into the second of this series. Then the rest of his back catalogue.
Fast, action packed, brings to life just about every nightmare a person could have. The Creator is a story of evil creatures, both dead and alive and the people who hopefully have the courage to find and destroy them. A love interest and battle of the sexes add a couple of supportive subplots. Luckily, the large number of good-guy characters are shot, eaten and otherwise eliminated singly or in groups so the main characters can come to the fore. The author skillfully gives the reader intimate looks at people just before killing them off and keeps us worried as he throws those we get to know best into a stream of hard-to-foresee peril. With few slow spots, minimal but sufficient scene descriptions, and just right cuts from action to action, the reader isn’t invited, but thrust through the story. Neil Carstairs gives us a beautifully written paranormal thriller that will delight and punch in the gut those attracted to the genre. Highly recommended.
The Creator was an action-packed read with authentic characters and believable descriptions. The Creator had a very military plot with a bit of supernatural thrown in, but not enough to make this an urban fantasy (in my opinion). I did start to lose track of the plot when the supernatural elements increased, but this was due to my reading preferences as opposed to the writing.
