I want to give this four stars, but I just don't feel like it "deserves" that extra star. This was an interesting read, but if felt too slow and too short at the same time. Like, it feel like what was in the book could have been condensed into five pages, but it also read really slowly. I dunno. Depending on how the next two issues go, I may drop this title.

It took me some time to get into Raffaele Ienco's Mechanism, but by the end I was so hooked the only disappointment is that the second issue isn't out yet (though I guess it will be pretty soon).

In a small space of time, we follow several plot lines which intertwine by the end. The beginning shows an alien race descending on Earth, and later we know that things went poorly for Earth from several scenes that show just how miserable the cities look. We meet an older man with his dog, scavenging for food, and also two soldiers on patrol, a woman and a black man for some added diversity. In the company of the soldiers is a machine that is there to observe. The soldiers debate its purpose - to fight or to watch.

The dialogue is colorful and lively, but it took some time for me to get into this. The black soldier had two scenes where he points at his partner in the exact same way, and his character is played up a bit too high-strung. By the end, things have completely flipped, and there's a surprising poignancy in the action. The action isn't like other comics, simply to excite and titillate, but you get the sense there is something to lose. I was surprised by the amount of feeling that comes through at the end. And it ends on a cliffhanger, with the narration making this all the more intriguing.

The artwork features realistic looking people who come off almost 3D. This isn't a good look, but in combination with the colorful palette against the dreary background, it is redeemed. Looking forward to the next issue.
