Eva Caye morphed from dilettante writer into obsessive author after a health crisis caused her to re-evaluate her life. Set 600 years in the future, the To Be Sinclair series is her vision of the greatest ruling family in the history of the galaxy. All thirteen ebooks are available on Amazon and Smashwords, with two prequels and two others set in the Sinclair universe as works-in-progress. Eva lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her magnificent husband of twenty-five years.
The Science Fiction Romance (SFR) Brigade's Portal series continues in Volume Five with another excellent selection of first chapters from ten SFR authors. The stories have a wide variation of categories within both Romance and Science Fiction genres. With the taster and wide variation it is easy to find at least one tale which tickles a reader's fancy.
First Day reading Dignity by Eva Caye - Picked up sampler. The series (To Be a Sinclair) is up to nine novels plus supporting short stories and novellas. I am not sure if I am up to this level of commitment at the moment, but the writing is excellent. I am making a note in my to-be-read file to revisit this story. (From the "warning notes" this series veers into the erotica area.) Faring Soul by Tracy Cooper-Posy - Another really good temptation. Picked up sample. Aliens in the Barn by Kyndra Hatch - Now that is a different type of love story. Color me intrigued.
Day Two Reading The Vista by S.A. Hoag - Post-apocolypse. Rather convoluted start. I was unable to follow it at the late night hour I read this first-chapter. Project Hell by Felicity Kates - Android love. Curse of the Brimstone Contract by Corrina Lawson - Steampunk. One incredible zinger as part of the characters introduction made me pick up the sampler. The sampler started at a different point of the story and wasn't nearly as interesting. The author was correct to do the advertising through Portals with something other than the first-chapter. Bring Me to Ruin by Tess Rider - Time travel. Nope.
Day Three of reading Star Cruise: Marooned by Veronica Scott - Star ship cruise staff, the porter, waitress, etc. Not something you usually see and a very interesting twist. Picked up the sample. Ms. Scott caught my attention in Volume Four as well. Definitely an author to watch. The Slave Planet by Seven Steps - What a title. The twist for this one is the men are the slaves and the story seems to be a combination of coming-of-age for the female heroine and developing ethics related to being an abolitionist. I'm not particularly interested in a YA story at the moment, but I hardily support remembering how to combat slavery. Humans backslide into old habits of hatred and demeaning other of their species at unexpected times. We should never forget and always know how to combat this. Overload Flux by Carol Van Natta - Well written without the twists of the other two. "Standard" SFR (if science fiction is ever standard), with a romantic couple, psychic powers, military training, interstellar conspiracy, and a police procedural investigation. Lots of different things happening. Picked up the sample and then the full book and completed half the book last night.
Five out of ten books made me look at the samplers - a great ratio. And one went as far to get me to by the book the same night - when I am very broke and also wanted to sleep. Portals is a great series with many great authors.
Portals Volume Five is first chapters of ten fascinating and fabulous Sci-fi romances. It starts out with Dignity By Eva Caye about Felicia, a microengineering student in electrical engineering at the Imperial University of Sinclair Demesne's Urban District, who receives an unexpected visit at school from the emperor's social director. The emperor has invited her to be his date at his upcoming ball. At the ball, it seems the emperor might be looking for more than a date, but as Felicia says, when she is asked if she looks to a future as mistress of her own household, "I can't imagine such duties would satisfy my need to understand the nature of the universe, nor would they provide me with the tools to create devices to improve the lot of mankind." It's a charming well-written tale that I loved. Next, Faring Soul by Tracy Cooper-Posy is about Catherine Shahrazad, a kick ass heroine, who travels to the planet of Shanta II in the Fringe Territories to purchase an extremely important high-tech device she has commissioned those aliens to make. The deal goes bad, but she expected that and is able to escape with the tech she'd come for. Then she heads in her space ship to Federation Space, a place where she is not wanted. It's a smoothly, written, fast, thrilling action adventure sci-fi romance that I loved. Next, is Aliens In The Barn, which includes a shoot out between two Berryllian aliens who end up actually being a husband and wife reuniting, Miaxa was a little mad at Bazin for leaving her. It's a fun, fresh, action packed well-written story that I loved. There are eight other fantastic tales, all first chapters, so readers are introduced to a variety of new sci-fi romance books and new authors they'll want to check out. I highly recommend Portals: Volume Five.
