He's broken in body and spirit, but she's not giving up.
Leave me the hell alone. Is that so freakn' hard to grasp?
Yeah, Derrick is angry, and bitter, but with good reason. His army buddies should have left him to die instead of dragging him out of the rebel camp--and he meant drag. Shrapnel to his back ensured his legs are useless hunks of meat. Everything below his waist is useless--limper than an overcooked noodle. Whimper.
As if that wasn't bad enough, fate just has to kick a wolf when he is down and send him the curvy and luscious Janine. According to his inner beast, she's his mate. Not happening. There will be no claiming because Derrick isn't about to saddle anyone with half a man. I don't want her pity.
Problem is, Janine, with her fiery red hair and tempting curves, won't leave him the hell alone. She thinks she can fix him. And a part of him, the part that refuses to give up hope, is tempted to let her try.
Can she teach this broken wolf new tricks--including bedroom ones--that will make him howl once again?
Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .
I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
That's about where my like for the book ends. I have stated many times before about my absolute dislike of Exasperating Heroines!!! Omg! Why? Why are they in books?
The heroine has HUGE daddy issues! I'm all for heroines with issues but not when the issues take away from the story. After awhile I was starting to wonder why she was there. It felt like she only cared for him because she couldn't save her dad. It ruined the whole "oh I can't wait until they're together" experience.
The hero went through a lot and did a ton of woe is me but it was completely understandable after everything he went through. However, he went from leave me alone, no one can help me, I hate myself to ok I'll embrace my life, embrace my family and love every part of my situation. It wasn't real. One extreme to the next, felt fake.
The heroine leaves the hero during a crucial moment in his life and I hated her even more. The fact that the hero agrees with it and takes all the fault made me want to punch my face.
In conclusion it had a ton of potential and promise but quickly went down hill. Bummer.
My favorite parts of the book were when Derrick would get all, growly, wolfie, and possessive, "rip their eyes out. Tear at their throats. How dare they sniff around our female." I enjoyed this book, Derrick needed a lot of patience and sass thrown back at him and his Red was the woman for that job.
Snarky, funny, emotional, and sexy, Derrick and Janine’s book closes out a lovable family of odd shifters with a bang! Easily my favorite of the series (even if Janine’s daddy issues made me want to pull my hair out), I enjoyed the push and pull between Derrick, his wolf, and Janine. With sarcastic banter and zippy quips that had my brows occasionally raising high, this was an entertaining read!
I've really debated this four star rating. It really needs some sharper editing. Most noticeably in the beginning, perhaps later on in the book too, but by then I was so invested that the strange punctuation and line break ups didn't bother me as much. So what started out as a three rose to four because I enjoyed the story.
I found all the characters compelling. And while I'm not generally a paranormal reader, I liked how this was handled.
Here is what almost brought it back down to a three: spoiler alert
There was a GD miracle cure. I hate a MC. You know the kind were suddenly the thing the Hero has been struggling to accept the whole time, that the Heroine has helped him realize doesn't really matter and he can have a full life anyway? Then along comes the Miracle Cure and solves everything, basically negating the whole point of their interactions up to this point?! I hate MCs.
BUT luckily this MC isn't complete and it pulls together so it went back up to a begrudging 4 stars.
This one was nice, so by now we know that this series concentrate on a certain family of wolf shifters, since one sibling mates in each book.
- So in this book the hero was scarred from a bombing and now he's in a rehab facility but doesn't see anyone and the remains cliches of him being isolated and all that.
- I liked that the heroine was the step daughter of a councilman from the shifter community so even if she's human she knows all about their community.
- I liked how the heroine dealt with his orneriness XD
- I loved how the step dad was about the heroine and how he laid it out to the hero.
- I loved how the hero's family was about him and their reaction when he finally agreed to meet them and what his brothers practiced so that they never leave him out of it XD
- I think it's a great finale for the series it shows how the family is bonded together and now we know that each have their happily ever after
* I recommend reading the previous books before reading this entry.
After coming back from the war broken, paralyzed and bitter, Derrick has hidden from the world for quite a while already. With his wolf dangerously close to the surface, he might not only be a danger to himself in this state. But then the council throws a human doctor at him, deteminded to help him adjust to his new life. But Janine is not just hellbound on helping him through this, she is also his mate, something Derrick might not be able to accept.
What an enjoyable finale to this series, Derrick and Janine definitely two of the best written characters in the series. Both of them well rounded out, with in depth histories and values and morals. The romance is funny and kind of sweet and their interactions are quite hilarious as well. I was entertained and as a finel to the series I was not mad at this story at all. Also, no open ending so I'm happy to leave it at this.
3.5* Rounded up for GR. I have mixed feelings about this one. Of all the books in this series, this was the most serious in tone (and had the least amount of sexy times). I liked Derrick and thought he actions (attitude) was realistic for someone with PTSD and dealing with life changing events (his paralysis). I was disappointed in Janine. She had some BIG daddy issues that she hadn't gotten over and (of course) this affected her relationship with Derrick. To a point I understood her, and then not. Not the best, not the worst (Jungle Freakn' Bride just pissed me off) in this series.
Book about a wolf shifter wounded overseas, and his recovery... which is both emotional and physical, and both completely revolve around a psychiatrist with [PTSD/suicide] daddy and stalker boyfriend issues. Which means she should never, EVER, have been put on this guys' case - it's a conflict of interest, from before she even shows up.
The language is foul (but authentic), and the sex is minimal (although talked about a LOT and pretty hot when you get there), but if you're looking for shifting, there pretty much isn't any. One shift, hardly any description at all. It was kind of pointless, making him a shifter at all - except for the whole 'if he doesn't get his head on straight, we take him out' angle. Which is about all it was good for.
I enjoyed it. The writing was solid, the characters believable, the plot fairly sound. I just didn't love it for the reasons above... so I docked a star for the things that brought it down for me.
I won’t do it to them. I won’t do this to my family. He spared them that chore by throwing himself at the mercy of the military who had a place for guys like him, some kind of rehab center for broken soldiers—many of them shifter ones. Derrick thought of it as the farm people sent their broken pets to die.
Oh how hard his beast pushed for control, enough that Derrick had to make an effort to remain in the driver’s seat.
“Perhaps we should start over. My name is Janine Whelan. I’m a clinical psychologist for a private hospital a few hours from here. I’ve been tasked with helping you to reintegrate into society.” He didn’t take her hand, rather glared at it. “I’m Derrick don’t give a fuck who doesn’t need any help because I’m fine.”
Grab her. She’s ours to take.
For a moment, she wondered if he’d do something on purpose to make her react. Bring it. She was more than ready for it.
“I thought I told you to leave.”“Not until we talk.”“I don’t want to talk. Find yourself someone else to harass.”“Too bad. I choose you.”
“It’s called getting you to wake up. To stop being a coward.” The incredulous look on his face wiped the scowl. “You’re calling me a yellow belly? I’ve seen and survived shit you can’t imagine, Red. Shit that would make you piss your pants. So you can take your fucking fancy-schmancy mumbo jumbo and fuck off.”“Given your record, I can’t believe you are too chicken to chitchat with me.”
The doctor misconstrued his agitation. “You don’t like her type? Sure, she’s a little curvy, but personally, I like a plump lady.” So did Derrick, but that wasn’t why he growled. He didn’t appreciate the fact the doctor noticed her in the first place. If he didn’t know better, he’d accuse himself of jealousy. Because she’s mine. Oh no she wasn’t. She couldn’t be, and yet, the certainty lingered, a certainty that came from deep within.
“You know I’m not going to lie, Derrick. It’s not looking good, whether you do the surgery or not. If you do, then there’s the chance your condition will worsen, and if we don’t…”“I’ll get worse. Or die.” Was it wrong to hope for the second part?
“Why do you care what I’m thinking or what my plans are for the future?”“I care because you’re alive, and I want you to stay that way.”
want to be able to sink into her. To feel her clenching around me. To feel the quiver of her orgasm. How could he ever properly claim a woman—not just any woman, Janine—if he couldn’t slide his cock into her and brand her with his flesh? There are toys.
She didn’t offer to help at all. He hated it when she respected him that way. How dare she keep proving I can take care of myself! Surely some kind of crime deserving of punishment? Like a kiss. No kiss. Grope?
Everybody is staring at me.”“No one is staring,” she replied, peeking at the laminated menu of drinks. “And if they are looking in our direction, they’re probably staring at me. In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m the only woman in the place other than the waitresses. They’re probably wondering if I’m available.”“You’re with me,” he growled. “As your doctor,” she reminded. “But they don’t know that. They shouldn’t be staring.” He aimed his glower at the room in general.
Rip their eyes out. Tear at their throats. How dare they sniff around our female.
“No. I can see you want her out of your life, and rather desperately too. Care to explain why? Or should I guess?” A grimace pulled Derrick’s lips. “She’s not safe around me.”“Not safe? Are you saying you’d harm her?”“Never.”“Then you’d better explain yourself.” There were times a man could lie, to himself, to others, but here and now, with so much on the line, Derrick couldn’t. He let out a sigh. “She’s my mate, which is obviously not a good thing.”“Why not?” Derrick couldn’t help but shoot an incredulous look at the man before him. “Why not? You really have to ask?” He slammed a fist down on his dead meat snakes. “This is why.”“Are you saying my daughter is too shallow to accept you as you are?”
“Then you think you might lose control of your beast and hurt her.”“I would never harm her. Never!”Anger burned within, but it was his wolf that took the most savage exception. “Janine is bright and beautiful and caring. She deserves better than being saddled with a cripple who can’t be a true mate to her. Who can never give her children. Or dance with her at a wedding.”“Shouldn’t Janine be the one to make that choice?”
“What happened to that speech about me deserving better?” A chuckle rolled from his lips. “Oh, you probably deserve better. I won’t argue that point, but it seems you’re stuck with me.”
Derrick's unit was ambushed and he got hit by shrapnel to his lower back. He was taken to the rebel camp where the wound got worse and he was tortured. When he was drug to civilization and sent to a rehab center, he was sent a new psychiatrist
Derrick discovers that not only isn't Janine not afraid of him and his wolf, she is his mate! Janine has to maintain a professional relationship with Derrick while fighting the attraction to him.
This has to be my favorite in the Freakn' Shifter series. It was a raw, emotional journey to read this book, yet, there is the normal Eve Langlais humor threaded throughout. I couldn't put the book down and I didn't want it to end. It was amazing.
This was a great read. Love when this author tells a story because she includes a lot of humor along with her dealing with the issues. This story tackles shifter PTSD and a debilitating injury. Shifters are always seen as physically unstoppable, but when circumstances leave Derrick handicapped from the waist down, his pride gets in the way. Janine is sent in to be his psychologist, but turns out she is his mate. This story follows the both of them struggling with their own issues, while trying to run from each other.
Loved it. I've been missing Eve Langlais and her snarky fun loving characters. I highly recommend all her shifter books if you need a pick me up. They're great for a good laugh and an enjoyable read. Eve Langlais delivers another fun and sexy shifter romance with this series. Eve Langlais brings the prefect balance of sexy and snarky with her writing style. If you’re looking for a fast fun easy read with romance and a cast of snarky shifters you should REALLY give this series a try.
I gave this book five stars because it freakin' rocked. Derrick my wounded hero I wanted to smack him a time or two but I loved him so much. And Janine what a herione she was spit fire and totally awesome in my book. Sometimes old wounds will change a person but true love will forever save the day. Excellent book.
This seems like the most serious of the Freakn' romances. Our hero has been injured in battle and it has not healed completely because of shrapnel that couldn't immediately be removed and he is also at risk of losing control of his wolf. The heroine is a mental health professional and helps him through this as they fall in love.
Freakn' Out is Freakn’ fantastic! Eve Langlais writes sexy, snarky and fun reads. This book is sweet, sexy and fun but it is also an emotional rollercoaster that will have you reaching for the tissues on more than one occasion. I think this may be the best thing I’ve read by this author.
If you have ever wondered about a really great author and her warped mind and how she spins all of these stories, this is one author you have to read. Marvelous story line and intriguing characters. Love these shifters!
this author is quite easily racist. she chose to write a book about a delicate situation and instead of giving any true consideration to the topic, she simply donned her hood and enjoyed her white privilege. There is no mention of the fact that the Gaza strip issue is a result of outside "intervention" or that a people who had lived there for many years lost their home. There was no consideration that your people imposing themselves on another has only worsened tensions or that your troops have caused more harm than good. This very racist white woman proceeds to oversimplify culture and ethics just so that her white man character is the hero and not simply an invader who should have simply stayed his ass home instead of going where he was not needed.
Book quote: "It truly sickened her to find out just how inhumane people could be. And for what? To claim a strip of land as their own? To say their God was better than another? Sharing and caring. Two simple concepts that, if adopted worldwide, would end so much of the strife and suffering.Alas, nothing about the world was ever simple. Just like Derrick wasn’t simple. A man of complexity, he would require careful handling. Two hands, I’ll bet. Gasp. She blushed, even if she sat alone in her bed. How quickly and dirty her thoughts turned when thinking of the man. How utterly wrong. Here she read about how he’d survived something horrific and she couldn’t help but see his bravery—and found him the more attractive for it."
I really wish that it didn't end with I just think it was better because it was different with him being disabled. Anyway, I enjoyed this one probably the most, minus what I mentioned and the fact the heroine made me was to claw my eyes out sometimes. It was all really great until the surgery is bought up again and then I started disliking things. I really liked the reunion scene with his family, thought it was very much like them, but that was the only thing towards the end I really enjoyed.
I absolutely loved this book. Loved the characters and storyline so much. Derrick and Janine were so great. I laughed quite a few times with all their drama. I always want more of the story but at least they mentioned a girl. Brian sure received his comeuppance. What a wonderful story to show how much war affects our proud Soldiers. And this is just a tiny taste of the struggles that they face. Proud to be an American 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 😊😊😊😊😊💜💜💜💜💜🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Pretty great read about coping with the challenges of having disabilities. The fact that he *spoiler alert* ends up totally "normal" at the end of the book, did take away from that arc imo. He had to NOT be disabled to end up happy...in a sense, is the message of this story. THAT ASIDE, I liked this book a lot. Doctor and patient fall in love. Metaphysical/supernatural stuff is at play. Wish we could have had more from the big, crazy Grayson family.
Wounded, tortured, paralyzed and stubborn bats heads with determined and unrelenting! Neither one wants to give in but both are fighting the call of mating. Want to have a fun frolic through the we’re world? It starts on page one...dig in!
Oh gosh, do I have a soft spot for wounded hero's, who doesn't. Sigh! Eve Langlais is a wonderful author and you'll enjoy her other series Furry United Coalition Bundle
I read this book out of series order but it certainly did not affect my enjoyment. As usual Ms. Langlais has penned very realistic characters even if the hero is a shifter. This is a somewhat light read with lots of comic relief. I thoroughly enjoyed and will certainly go back and read the other books.
