Casket Cache by Janice J. Richardson is the first book in the "Spencer Funeral Home Niagara Cozy Mystery" series and was published in 2016. The author is new to me, but I'd seen a few of her book reviews and social media posts previously and wanted to read one of her novels. I was happily entertained and will continue reading the series in the future.
Jennifer Spencer (~25ish) inherited an uncle's funeral home several months ago. She's quickly adapting to life in a different but familiar town, learning how to run her own business. In between the time her uncle passed on and she took over, a temporary director / mortician ran the show. Jennifer has an easy transition with him, hires a great new helper she can mentor, and loves being guided by her uncle’s former assistant / manager who wants her to succeed. Then some weird things transpire... Jennifer learns what really happened in her uncle's wonderful funeral home during those last few months. Was the temporary director responsible or just an unknowing fool who was too focused on his job?
What a fantastic story! I loved learning all about the mortuary business and seeing the protagonist's empathetic heart when dealing with a man who lost his son, a couple who had a stillborn child, and family grieving for their loved one. While this cozy veered from the traditional approach in terms of "find body, solve crime," it's fully set the stage for great things to come. I liked how Jennifer didn't actually investigate anything but reacted to situations she found herself put in from a business perspective. Using friends and new colleagues, she realized something was amiss and provided all the details to the police. In the end, we solve one crime but had some open questions on the other: a mini-cliffhanger. I loved that aspect of the story.
Richardson's writing style and tone make this an easy book to read. I like the main character, and her supporting cast seems to be well-rounded and have a lot of potential. The Niagara setting makes for a wonderful backdrop, and the possibilities in a funeral home are kinda cool. I'm glad I found this one and look forward to reading more later this year.

Casket Cache is an extraordinary cozy mystery for as much the setting as the author’s style of writing. In addition to being a well-built mystery, the story offers an intimate glimpse into the life of a funeral director and the inner works of a funeral home.
The author is able to inspire a level of compassion and empathy I’ve never before encountered in fiction. After reading this book, I actually felt hopeful and reassured, despite the sometimes heavy topics discussed.
It is first and foremost a mystery. The story follows Jennifer, a young woman who has just moved to Niagara, Canada to start work as the funeral director of funeral home left to her by her recently deceased uncle. Before she can get settled in, there is a break-in. The responding police find a large sum of money in one of the caskets and the circumstances point to Jennifer’s involvement.
Jennifer, along with her new co-workers and a few old friends, has to figure out what’s really going on and who is truly involved before she’s arrested. Break-ins, physical threats, illegal drugs, the disappearance of a Casino pit boss and someone trying to run Jennifer off the road, make it clear that there’s more going on than the local police suspect.
The central mystery is resolved in a satisfactory way and the last few chapters set up the cast and story for the next installment of this (currently) three part series.
Throughout the novel, Jennifer’s work as a funeral director continues; she prearranges funerals for the terminally ill, picks up murder victims from crime scenes, prepares bodies for cremations, and meets with chaplains to help console those who have lost someone special to them. The author’s moving descriptions of the tragedies encountered daily on the job are filled with compassion, sensitivity and empathy. It is clear she has drawn deeply on her actual experiences as a funeral director, and this story is much better for it. She’s able to tap into a level of emotional depth not usually found in cozy mysteries.
Jennifer’s profession was why I initially hesitated reading this book and didn’t request to review it for Mystery Thriller Week. However during MTW, I read a few interviews with the author and was so fascinated by her, I decided to take a chance on the first book in the series. Though death is a topic most of us try to avoid, it is an inevitable part of life. Like most forty-year-olds, I’ve buried too many loved ones. It is reassuring to know there are people like Jennifer out there, who truly sympathize with someone’s loss.
I highly recommend this to fans of mysteries, amateur sleuths, and cozies. It is something different and definitely worth the read. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

A new series and author for me. The next two books that out all already in my queue to read. The information on funerals is fabulous. There are descriptions of different ways a body can be disposed of. The correct way a funeral director works and their responsibilities. I especially like the way the characters are introduced and their backgrounds explain. The tale has all the elements of a cozy yet it is different, I don't remember reading anything similar.
Jennifer and her twin have inherited their Uncle's funeral home. Jennifer will run the business. She has a lot of training to run a funeral home and has been working at a corporate funeral in Toronto, Canada.
The story starts with her and Peter going to pick a body for the coroner. Shortly after Jennifer takes over the business, the business is broken into and Jennifer is injured. Jennifer and her employees must find the answer so they can side the families of the dead.

- While Casket Cache is a bit light on mystery, it makes up for it with a lovely character study. The protagonist, Jennifer Spencer, is a selfless young woman of integrity, compassion, and wit. She is easy to like and root for. The insightful behind the scenes exposition of the inner-workings of funeral homes is depicted in an interesting, succinct tone. I enjoyed the read, and I look forward to the sequel: Winter’s Mourning.

Let me tell you, I was intrigued by the idea of a mystery series starring a funeral home owner/ director. And boy did I get an education in running a funeral home!
The author herself, Janice J. Richardson, is a funeral home director and has taken the “write what you know” advice to heart. It was intriguing to get this insight into the workings of such a business. The care and pride of the main character, Jennifer, and her staff in their work make them quite inspiring. Strict standards are expected and adhered to.
Such a setting also lends itself to finding out more about what I would call ‘tertiary characters’ and their lives. We catch glimpses into the hearts of families mourning the loss of a baby, a suicide victim, the accidental death of an only child. Each case is delicately handled by both the main character and the author. The compassion yet professional reserve comes through clearly.
Perhaps it is due to the nature of her job, or better yet, her calling, Jennifer acts much older than her given age. At almost the halfway point we learn that our main character is only 26, when she comments on how close in age she is to one of her charges. She’s a mature young woman who knows what she wants in life. She has a big heart which endears her to her friends and staff. She also has a strong sense of justice and right and wrong. It is that quality that piques her interest in what is happening with regard to a related murder investigation.
The mystery itself it two-fold. The book opens with Jennifer and her assistant, Peter, assisting at a murder scene. There is that murder to figure out. Then there is the bigger problem, for Jennifer anyway, of the mysterious cache of cash that she discovers in a casket in her funeral home. There aren’t very many suspects to choose from. The story seems to be more focussed on the how and why of the matter. And that’s quite a windy, twisty tale! The blurb clearly states that the main plot continues in Book 2. A lot is resolved, including identifying a main culprit, in this first book but there are more revelations to come in Book 2.
My main criticism would lie in my personal preference for the main character to be more actively involved (not obtrusive) in solving the crime. Jennifer is more affected by the events surrounding the mystery rather than actively participating in it.
Overall, I found this to be an easy, interesting and enjoyable read. It’s different, in a good way!!!

Friday night I started Casket Cache, sometime after 8:30, I wished I had started it earlier because by 11 I hated putting it down. Casket Cache written by Janice J Richardson is a truly wonderful cozy. I have to admit that the thought of a cozy mystery centered around a funeral home director could lend it's self to being silly and awkward, I was pleasantly surprised that I found this to be one of the most serene and easy flowing cozy mystery books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The way that Janice writes, quickly and all at once put my inquisitive readers mind at ease. I felt like I was emotionally involved from the first sentence and left wanting more at the end of the book. Clearly there was thought, research, personal experience and insight that Janice had for her character that made her feel like a real live and breathing person. Someone you would love to know and be friends with. This cozy was respectful, this cozy was compassionate, insightful and it was a reading experience I will treasure. Casket Cache is book one of three with book two coming out in November and I will anxiously await it's release. There is so much I want to say and tell you about from this book and the connections I made with it and my own life but I don't want to give it away. This is a book I think you should add to your TBR pile for sure.

I had no idea a cozy featuring a funeral director could be so interesting and entertaining. While the book was a little light on mystery, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Perhaps it was the mood I was in having recently had some interaction with a funeral home, but I found the behind the scenes glimpse of the business fascinating. The characters were well drawn and the dialogue was natural; these were people I would welcome into my home again and hope to do so when the next book (a teaser was included so I know a second book is coming) is released.

This is the first book of the series. This is an awesome start to a series. It slowly sucks you in and by the end you can’t wait for more. The characters are well developed. A very unique plot.

Cozy mystery and more!
I enjoyed this book very much. It's a bit different from other cozies I've read. You can tell that Jan Richardson knows her stuff. You get a real feeling for what it must be like to run a funeral home.

Billed as a cozy mystery (which I admit is a genre I don’t read too often) Casket Cache focuses on Jennifer Spencer, a young funeral director who recently inherited the family business. To me, the mystery element of this book was ancillary. It was there, in the background, but it wasn’t what kept me turning the pages.
Sure, there was murder, breaking and entering, thousands of dollars hidden in a coffin... but the heart of this book is really Jennifer and how she helps a multitude of families cope with the loss of their loved ones. Somehow author Janice Richardson manages to walk a fine line through potentially distressing topics (stillbirth, suicide, and tragically fatal accidents) with a finesse that will leave your heart warmed. Now that’s a hat trick!

Casket Cache surprised me with a setting and characters that are anything but mundane. It took me to a world which I have little knowledge of, providing insights and descriptions I found very interesting. The mystery is engaging; the characters – believable. The end leaves the reader in suspense, as we are not quite sure what will happen next. I recommend it to everybody who likes moderately-paced cozy mysteries.

A really well written cozy! The premise is written with respect which can be attributed to the author's experience.
I read this in one setting simply because it was so good!

I'm always impressed when an author finds a new niche, and Richardson, with her background as a funeral director, has definitely found a new niche with this insightful book that is much more than another mystery. It's not always "cozy" in the cats, crafts, and cookie recipes" sense, but it is an enjoyable read. Don't let the subject matter scare you off!

Casket Cache was an enjoyable read. The unique setting in a funeral home was an unexpected plus for me. I enjoyed the behind the scenes glimpse of the business and appreciated seeing it through the eyes of the protagonist, Jennifer. Though at times understandably insecure about her youth and limited experience, her compassion and intelligence made her a very likable character. There were some highly emotional moments that could have slipped into melodrama but the author handled them beautifully. I’d certainly recommend Casket Cache to cozy mystery fans!

Awesome mystery.
This is the first book I have read written by this author. It didn't take long for me to add this author to my lists of favorites. The characters are so real you feel as if you know them personally. I would highly recommend this book.

Interesting and enjoyable mystery.
'Casket Cache' is the first of the Specer Funeral Home Niagara cozy mystery series. While I enjoy a good mystery, this book particularly appealed to me because the Niagara area of Ontario is quite familiar to me and, as stated by the author, "one never gets tired of the falls".
This is a well developed mystery, with a few surprising twists and turns to keep the reader guessing along the way. The main character is very likeable, as are the rest of the main cast. Setting mystery stories in a funeral home is very clever as the author obviously knows her material, but also because it's quite unique in the cozy mystery genre amongst the many that are set in restaurants, hotels, and various small town establishments.

I enjoyed reading Casket Cache. It was a nice surprise to see a cozy set around a funeral home. The author's knowledge of the business added an extra depth to the book, and the characters were quite likable. I was, however, surprised at the abrupt ending as I had no idea that this story would be continued in the next book - not my fav type of ending :). Enjoyable regardless as we did find out 'who dun it'.

Having attended my unfortunate share of funerals recently, I wondered how an author could create an entertaining story around a funeral home. Surprisingly, Casket Cache read like a typical cozy, with a very unique setting. There are touches of sorrow as Jennifer assists families in dealing with their lost loved ones, but do not let the subject matter put you off. Richardson presents characters and a setting that you'll want to visit again.

I really enjoy Janice's books. This is my second one, and I just purchased Winter's Mourning. I will read it this weekend. I have to admit, I was fascinated with the term Cozy Mystery! Now I am in love with a Cozy Mystery!

This was an interesting and unique book, and I really enjoyed it. The characters are well-developed and the view into the workings of a funeral home was fascinating. I especially enjoyed the mature, professional main character.

Wonderful Mystery,
First, with knowing the background of the author, I was really drawn to reading this book. Now that I've read it, I am so glad that I did. This is not a typical story by any means, and the setting is perfect. There is a sense of light and dark but it's what's in between that makes the story. The writing style kept this reader enticed, and the plot was just so genuine and wonderful. It was a grand mystery, with a very smart, witty and compassionate main character, I just loved Jennifer. I look forward to future books by Richardson, and more within this setting. The emotions ran high and in different directions in this story and gave the sense of mystery that any story truly needs.

"Casket Cache" was my introduction to the world of the cozy mystery. I found it to be an intriguing story with well developed characters who grab attention right from the start. It was also fascinating to learn about the funeral industry, and that crime may occur in the most unlikely places. Well done Ms. Richardson!

I loved this book! The MC, Jennifer Spencer at the Spencer Funeral Home is very real, and her work puts her in the perfect position to be involved with a murder. She is called to the scene and it is a brilliant positioning. The day to day demands and wonderful supporting characters this book is a not only cozy but also a great story.

Synopsis:
Jennifer Spencer has inherited her uncle’s funeral home, along with her twin sister. However, Jennifer is running the funeral home and sharing the profits with her sister. Her move to the Niagara Region into the apartment above the Home went well, but in the first week alone, someone breaks into the funeral home. After which, Jennifer finds cash in a casket, a lot of cash, which puts her as the main person of interest in her new town. She is certain that all of the problems, i.e., a missing key, being followed by a fellow funeral director, a near break in are all related the money but she’s unable to convince the police. But Jennifer has families to serve and funerals to arrange; that is her number-one priority, especially since she wants to maintain her uncles’ stellar reputation. Jennifer knows something awful and dangerous is going to happen if the police don’t take her serious, but Jennifer Spencer, funeral director, is in the way.
My opinion and rank of 3.8
Who knew that there was so much involved in running a funeral home, not to mention that the funeral director needs to available 24/7.This cozy mystery followed a similar formula that other cozy mysteries follow, however, this one had a new setter, main character, sub characters and new information. All of this was intertwined in the story. The story just hooked me and kept me interested throughout as I learned a lot about the funeral business. I did not realize that there were corporation that owned different funeral homes. The skills, certification, personality and paperwork involved in planning a funeral or cremation. There were some sad sub stories that were intertwined that just made the mystery even more heartbreaking.
I highly recommend this book!!!
