Addiction is a complex problem, with social, psychological, and biological underpinnings. The scope of the problem is at epidemic proportions. Thanks to decades of scientific research, we are better equipped than ever to comprehend the causes, complications, and effective social and medical treatments for addiction.
Navigating the physical, medical, emotional, and social aspects of addiction can be overwhelming to patients, families, and even treatment providers. Many publications deal with this topic, however most are thin pamphlets or thick scientific treatises. This short book concisely and clearly answers the questions that students, patients, and their loved ones What is addiction? Why do we care about it? Why do some people get addicted and others do not? What do we do about addiction?
This book, created by Arwen Podesta, MD, is medically minded but accessible to all readers, and will answer these questions and more.
My adult child has undergone a program of medicated treatment and counseling with Dr. Podesta and her staff for several years. She has responded well, is working and enjoys a solid relationship with her siblings. While Suboxone has been a legal means to treat her addiction to opiates it has seemed over six years to inhibit her full engagement with all that life has to offer. It's difficult to describe, but she can stand at a distance from full societal interaction on this drug. To be fair this undoubtedly involves more than just the Suboxone. As Dr. Podesta argues in her book success in treatment is measured in terms of where the patient began and how far they have come. As AA says, "progress not perfection." No doubt I have seen my daughter go from a life of illicit drug use and reckless behavior to becoming a law abiding-functioning adult during her treatment. Her faith in her physician, her counseling and medication is absolute. This short book is candid, not overly technical and extremely informative. I would strongly recommend any parent who is struggling with a child or relative who is chemically addicted to read it, highlight it and keep it within arms reach.
The book is excellent in explaining everything about addictions. Very thoroughly written as well! I did not like how in some cases the sentences would veer off and the author would move on to a new topic. Sometimes made it seem like a choppy write. Sort of like the author was jotting down thoughts versus an writing an actual book. I would recommend this book.
Great insight into how and why the brain responds to different drugs
Much needed in today's culture to best understand how one is predispositioned to certain drugs. I've never seen such an insightful approach to addiction as this.
