The Crosses are back in book 7 of the Out of Time Series. An old enemy returns threatening to destroy not just Simon and Elizabeth, but the timeline itself. To keep that from happening, they must travel back to 1888 London to find Jack the Ripper…and save his life. If he dies, the timeline changes, and everything they know, their lives together, will be lost. But they soon discover the only thing harder than saving a monster is finding him.
Monique was born in Houston, Texas, but her family soon moved to Southern California. She grew up on both coasts, living in Connecticut and California. She currently resides in Southern California with her naughty Siamese cat, Monkey.
Monique attended the University of Southern California's Film School where she earned a BFA from the Filmic Writing department. Monique worked in television for several years before joining the family business. She now works full-time as a freelance writer and novelist. Her novels Out of Time, When the Walls Fell, Fragments & The Devil's Due are the first three books in the Out of Time series.
She's currently working on an adaptation of one of her screenplays, her father's memoirs about his time in the Air Force's Air Rescue Service and the next book in the Out of Time series.
Ahhhhhhh! Once again I am completely blown away with Monique Martin's ability to keep me guessing......the way that true events and fiction are woven together for the story is uncanny (she really does her homework). Simon and Elizabeth head to 1800s London in this next installment to believe it or not, save Jack the Ripper....um save him? Yes.... We meet Victor , a Frenchman who is also a member of the council and the three are off on a whirlwind adventure. Ms. Martin uses actual events in the story, and at times I felt myself thinking..."holy cow what if it really did happen that way??" Jack Wells also makes an appearance as does the evil Katherine Vale. can Simon and Elizabeth save the world in time? Once again a great read that kept me glued to the book from page one. Love this series....
Although I enjoyed this book, she has gone to a continuing story that never gets resolved so you are always left hanging. I really preferred the self contained books where that wasn't the case. The books are good enough that I'm going to read the next one but I hate having to remember what came before to make sense of the next novel. I almost have to go back and reread the previous novel. This is why I always wait until I have all of a trilogy before starting it. Can't do that with an on going series.
This seemed curiously less involving than previous titles in the series - possibly because the background events (the Jack the Ripper murders) are more familiar, though it may be a combination of being rather too long since I read one of these 'main sequence' novels and have forgotten about the characters that have featured in previous volumes. I had some problems visualising Elizabeth in full Victoria get-up making her way through the Whitechapel slums... And Jack Wells is mostly absent - he manages to dilute the possibly cloying Cross relationship. Other reviewers have commented on her general uselessness and while I don't have a massive problem with her I can see their point.
I have several more books to go and will continue the sequence.
I really enjoyed this installment of the Out of Time series. It had a bit more intrigue and complexity than the first books and raises questions about morality and shows more of a gray area instead of black and white good vs. evil. I also appreciate that Simon has more self-awareness about his jealousy and tendency to control and recognizes that it isn't healthy or fair to Elizabeth.
I've read the whole series and this was one of my favorites. While the entire series carries the undercurrent caution that you 'can't just mess around with time' this book adds a larger question-Even if you wanted to change time, how would you know what the "right" thing to do would be? This story challenges our assumptions that preventing tragedies would be a given "right thing" and the characters are pitted against their own senses of morality. The one jarring point for me is the sudden transformation of one of the characters. Her insanity/evilness is such an integral part of earlier novels that I think we needed more detail or information on what causes this complete change in her character in order for it to make more sense. An interesting, enjoyable read that brought further depth to the series.
Very much edge of my seat reading. As one who is quite invested in Elizabeth and Simon and Jack's lives and adventures this one really had me flipping the pages. With Katherine's evil plan throwing many spanners in the works, they set out on their next mission. One that had me fascinated from the get go. I have always had a fascination for the Jack the Ripper mystery and was looking forward to how Monique was going to deal with this one. Would she reveal the killer or skirt around the identity so we were left wondering. What I really enjoyed to was a glimpse inside life for the victims at that time in history. By the end my heart was jumping out of my chest! I can't wait to see how she tops it with the next book and where will the adventurers be off to? Maybe somewhere "Down Under"?????
Not my favorite book of the series, but still a GREAT read. I probably liked the last one the best so far. I'm stoked because there is an 8th book in the series coming out. Just wonder how long I will have to wait for it.
This book takes place in the late 1800's in London during the time of the Jack the Ripper murders, the most elusive homicide case in London's history. The goal of the protagonists (Simon and Elizabeth) is to find Jack the Ripper and prevent him from getting caught, because someone else traveled back in time to stop him and changed the whole time/space continuum thing and messed up the future.
That has to be difficult, right? Find murderer, then make sure said murderer is able to carry out his murders.
This time period was my favorite so far. It was fascinating to read about London in 1888! The Jack the Ripper plot was great. Again, we lose Jack for a good portion of the story here, and I definitely missed him. We meet Victor in this one (and I am guessing he will be important at some point down the road) but he was a very poor replacement for Jack. This would have easily earned 5 stars if Jack had been in it, and if we had spent a bit less time with Victor. He was kind of depressing.
There really wasn't any paranormal in this one, but we get the serial killer angle with the JTR story line. I had this one figured out long before E and S figured it out, but again, there was so much else going on that I really enjoyed it.
I love the Out of Time series. Elizabeth and Simon are wonderful characters, and I loved the introduction of Victor. I missed Jack. I was confused with the ending; primarily, the paradox did not make sense. Also, I felt that Vale's character was tragic rather than evil. Overall, I love this series and can't wait for the next book.
I first read this book in in 2014. I just read the book again (2016) for the second time, as I am making my way through the entire series again. I must say that I enjoyed it even more second time around, and I actually updated the original rating of 4 stars to 5 stars.
It was nice to be back in the world of Elizabeth and Simon, but ultimately I was disappointed by this installment.
First, Jack is my favorite supporting character, so I was excited and then promptly bummed that he was only in it for a minute. He is so underutilized.
Second, I'm not a fan of the whole Jack the Ripper thing, nor do I know much of anything besides the obvious. So I'm sure I missed a lot of historical trivia & bits that I've loved in all the previous books.
And third, it seemed like this book was either written too quickly or just had very poor editing, or both. So many typos and simple errors, it was too distracting.
Hoping the next one is better! :)

Today's history lesson was in good ole jolly England and who knew history could be so much fun. Ms Martin's attention to detail has you walking in the late evening fog one minute and then listening to the footsteps following the next. And just when you think you have everything all figured out, Ms Martin then pulls the rug out from uderneath you and gives you yet another twist to follow..
Our favorite villin is back along with a new character, a sweet grouchy old Frenchman. Jack dissappeared from the story rather quickly and if the Cross's fail in their mission, life as they know it will cease to be.
I would have given it 5 stars if there weren't so many writing issues that should have been caught by a proof-reader. Too many times extra words were added or words were missing. It really hurt the flow and got frustrating.
Otherwise, a very fun, fast-pace read. May be my favorite one yet!
Leaves off right after book 6 and gets pretty exciting as you are trying to figure out "who done it"...
like many others who have written before me I have enjoyed many other Ripper based novels and it was that theme that led me to this series of books and I decided to read them in order so this was the book I was waiting for. I enjoyed the new twist in that this time the mission was to save life but let crime occur . I didn't spot who was the Ripper till it was nearly revealed . felt this book was an improvement on book 6 so shall be starting book 8 straight awasy
This book is AWESOME!!! I couldn't put it down! The mystery in this one will keep you guessing all the way to the end. This book goes more toward mystery than love story, but it was perfectly written! Monique Martin has written one of the best series I have ever read! If you haven't read this series, DO IT!! you will not regret it! I can't wait for #8!
Fantastic!! I'm not usually a Jack the Ripper fan but this story took such a new and imaginative twist that I was totally hooked. As always, great characters / relationships, unexpected plot twists and turns, suspense and understanding. Great series!!
This was one of the best Out of Time books!!! A totally new theory about Jack the Ripper. I can't wait for book 8 to come out!! I just gotta know what's going to happen next!!!
it wasnt until about half way through that things started picking up then BAM it was over- I feel like too many things were left hanging and unanswered./
This episode was good, as they all are, but not my favorite. A little too slow here and there. The take on Jack the Ripper was very interesting and did give me something to chew on for a while.
I really liked this one, I did make correct guesses before they were revealed but, that did not diminish the pleasure from the story for me. It was not obvious in the beginning.
I love this series. I also love Simon and Elizabeth. This installment was exciting and action packed. It really keep me guessing. I can't wait to see what will happen next.
There wouldn't be any time travel mystery, be it in books, movies or TV shows, without a search for Jack the Ripper. And here we are, in Monique Martin's 7th book indeed investigating the same most notorious serial killer of all times. Fun book.
