His Perfect Submissive

Rate this book
Kara was the victim of a brutal rape that occurred when she was seven. The event destroyed her family and left her fearful and distrustful of men. When Kara's brother embezzles $30,000 from Slade's company, Kara goes to Slade's office determined to talk him out of going to the police. Slade wants a peaceful, obedient, submissive with whom to share his life and in Kara he glimpses what he wants. He siezes the opportunity and makes Kara an offer she can't afford to refuse. The only way she can save her brother from certain prison is to accept Slade's marriage proposal and become his submissive. Kara faces her wedding with anxiety. She can't tell Slade she can't submit sexually without risking her brother's freedom, yet she doubts she'll be able to keep her promise to be a submissive, obedient wife. This romance explores the role of trust in even the most mismatched of partnerships and explores the complex connections between dominance and submission while it demonstrates the power of real love to heal even the deepest wounds.

This is a copy of my Amazon review from last year:

This wonderful romance is sweet as well as erotic. This is a BDSM story but the focus is on the emotional side not the physical. Slade and Kara build a marriage based on his dominance and her submission. This is not about toys and dungeons. There is no forced sex or menages.

The plot is simple and has been described elsewhere. There are few secondary characters. The focus of the book remains solidly on the hero and heroine and their developing relationship. There are a few disturbing flashbacks but they're important to understanding Kara's past, not gratuitous in any way.

Slade is the perfect dominant hero, ultra protective of Kara and sensitive to her needs. He does push her, to marry him, to discard her baggy clothes, etc but he's never cruel. Even when he spanks her severely in the latter part of the book, it's to break down her emotional barriers and make her communicate what's bothering her.

Kara is closed down emotionally, from people, from sex. It's moving to see how she opens up. She's terrified because anyone who knows of her traumatic past leaves her, and has trouble believing that Slade won't do the same. She needs what Slade gives her but he needs what she gives him too. The drive to be a leader and protector is a core part of his character. It's wonderful how they complement each other.

The sex scenes were nicely done, explicit and hot. The spanking scene was a bit tough to read, it's definitely disciplinary not sexy. I would have liked the author to show us how Slade cares for Kara afterward, maybe rubbing salve or lotion onto her bottom and soothing the pain.

The epilogue is sweet and left me with a big smile. I understand this is the author's debut novel. Well done!

I will add a review to go with my rating, to explain a few things. First of all, the grammar and editing in this book leaves much to be desired. Nor is the story outlined very smoothly.

HOWEVER, as someone who enjoys the lifestyle as a profound submissive, this book pushed a lot of buttons for me. I get tired of the strong, self-aware submissive. I actually liked that this girl was pretty messed up and that she really needed the dominance of this man to get herself straightened out.

I also loved the way the dominant explained why he did what he did as he went along. It was spot on for me and it got me hot. I loved that he did not cater to her pleasure in every single situation, something that happens far too often in romantic BDSM, in my opinion.

This book is not perfect, but if you can stomach the editing, it's worth a read. Despite all it's many flaws it has a spot on my (very small and exclusive) keeper shelf.

The heroine in this book was a bit too screwed up for my tastes. She had some MAJOR issues from the abuse when she was a child and should have been in counseling ever since. What parent wouldn't put their kid in counseling after such a horrific attack? I just couldn't believe that the girl could have a sexual relationship with the hero, especially a D/s relationship even if it was only a light one, in the state of mind she was in. When I read one of these books, I want to be able to enjoy the story and love scenes, not sit there horrified about how screwed up the heroine is.

If I can suspend those beliefs, the story wasn't too bad. Some parts were rushed then the timeline jumped ahead. The hero was too controlling for my tastes, which actually takes a lot. So basically, the book was okay but I wouldn't run out and buy it. This is the author's first book and she does show some promise so I will keep a lookout for the next one.

Kara is in a pickle and through no fault of her own. Her brother has gotten himself into a fine mess and she is at his bosses office to beg on her knees if needs be to keep him out of jail.

The man Kara needs to persuade his Slade Westin – as much as she has spoken to him on the phone and he had told her in no uncertain terms that the matter is out of his hands, it’s her brother and she has to make another attempt at trying to resolve this matter.

One look at Kara and Slade was lost, despite his resolve to have nothing to do with this matter, once he saw Kara the only thing that comes to mind his ‘innocent and protect”. Slade is not your typical nice guy, he has a side to him that he doesn’t let out to play very often and when he does he makes sure his partners knows the score.

Slade is a Dom and not just any Dom – but a Dom looking for that one woman who he will cherish and love forever, but who will also give his woman what she wants even if she doesn’t realise it is what she needs.

Kara just happens to be that woman even if she doesn’t realise it and Slade know when not to look a gift horse in the mouth – so he offers a deal she really can’t refuse. Things have a way of backfiring when you least expect it and Kara comes with her set of baggage and none of it any good. For Slade this might just be the deal breaking whether his happily ever after is assured or not.

I was in need of a good bondage, sub, Dom book and this one was recommended by a friend. Firstly this books start off like the traditional Mills & Boons love story and to be honest quite a bit of it carries on along that line. As a lover of those books myself this book was an immediate hit with me.

I meet Kara and Slade as individuals before I met them as a couple and so I understood where their heads were at in terms of life, love and responsibilities. When the two got together despite the fact that it was not under the best of circumstances I was on tender hooks to see how Slade deal with Kara’s issues and more over to see if Kara trusted Slade enough to let him inside.

A lot of this book deals with patience and trust and it’s not a fast read and for the obvious reason. It was like a butterfly emerging and it was beautiful to see.

I likes Slade and Kara and also the fact that the book was written in a bubble effect, so it was just Kara and Slade working their way through years of issues and misconception and doing a grand job of it as well.

The story line was easy to follow, there were some topical issues that were deal with and some rather grim moments – but I thought Ms Aaron was quite tactful, direct and to the point about the matter so I was able to compartmentalise it and carry on enjoying the book .

The end game for these two was not rushed and I was pleased to see the unit they presented to me after the tear were done and the sun shined again….

I honestly didn't care for this book. The entire first half of the book seemed so wildly improbable that I had a very tough time caring about the characters. Besides the situation that Kara found herself in (seriously, what sort of person wouldn't tell the man she's agreed to marry about a childhood trauma of that magnitude BEFORE marrying them?), the dialog felt very stilted. I also had a hard time suspending my disbelief that someone who had gone through what she had gone through would willing allow herself to be a submissive. Maybe what I'm trying to say is that I could see it happening EVENTUALLY, but not at the virtual drop of a hat like it did here. Done correctly, I like stories about Doms and their submissives, however with this story I never felt like it quite got where it was intending to go.

Just an okay book for me. I didn't quite believe the heroine's issues stemming from her abduction and rape as a child. I can't imagine that someone had let her obvious hang-ups go on for as long as they did with no one stepping in. Surely child protective services or the like would have been involved? Something in me didn't ring true with all of this and I can't imagine that she would be so eager to get involved in a relationship with someone who was actively looking for a submissive. Borderline book for me -- D+ to C-.

Urrrkk, this one is just soo hard to review....

I guess that my problems with it are simply that I have little to no understanding of both the major issues here, childhood sexual assault and a D/S relationship. Bearing that in mind, what did irk me about this book was the degree of repetition. Not only of the issues happening within the book, but of the faults and means taken to deal with them. Kara fails to tell Slade about things that happened during her attack on many occasions, she worries and agonises that he's going to leave her due to what happened to her in childhood on that basis alone without talking to him about her concerns, despite him asking her what is going on. While I don't understand D/S roles, I'd think that ANY relationship would require more open communication than this one shows.

I had a hard time with this book. I really tried but.... I sympathize with Kara's situation, but honestly could not understand where the author was actually going with the story or if she even got there at the end. I guess I expected too much. Plus I seriously did not like Slade. This version of a dominant male just did not sit well with me. I felt empty at the end because Kara may have found love but she did not get the help she desperately needed.
Not a keeper, a definite donation to the book exchange at work.

His Perfect Submissive by Alyssa Aaron was a rather frustrating read. My guess is that all of the action in this 304-page novel could probably fit in about 5 pages. The other 299 pages were used to express the feelings of the characters over and over again.

Why say something once when you can say it several times? Why use just one word when 30 will suffice?

This book was overwhelmingly verbose and difficult to get through. I frequently stopped reading because I was frustrated with the pace of the book. I definitely cannot recommend this book as a good spanking novel.

This is a great book exploring a relationship, not only a great story well told, but good characterisation. One of the real positive things to come out of the book, in my opinion is the exploration of an alternative life style done in an honest three dimensional way, just so enjoyed this book

This book was a total mess - the bad writing, the unlikeable MCs, the off page BDSM, and the OTT childhood trauma. The author never showed a D/s relationship. The heroine never grew past her psychological problems.

The arranged marriage story line was totally implausible and very Harlequin.

The writing was deplorable and needed an editor. Too much verbage - too much telling and not enough showing. Too many inner thoughts and not enough conversation. Too much discussion and not enough action. The timeline was erratic with huge gaps. A very spotty beginning, an over extended middle, then a large plot hole, and a rushed ending with a lot of telling.

The D/s was 98% discussion and 2% actual play. The hero spent the whole honeymoon, and the majority of the book, telling the heroine about D/s. Then after they got back home, their D/s relationship and sex play was all off page except for one advanced scene. Where was the build up and relationship development that the hero alluded to? What a cop out!

The heroine lied by omission to the hero. She and her twin had bteen kidnapped at age 7. She was tortured and raped. She watched her sister get murdered. She did own up to the hero about the rape after she had a panic attack giving him a blow job. She didn't own up to the murder until the very end of the book. She resisted counseling as a child and refused it as an adult. This heroine was psychologically messed up and was not mentally ready to have a sexual nor a D/s relationship.

The hero bullied the heroine into marrying him to prevent pressing criminal charges against her brother. He forced her to stop working and isolated her at home. Once he found out about her childhood rape, he still had sex with her. He then instantly fell in love with her and decided he could help and protect her. At the end of the book he did make arrangements for her to go to therapy.

I really enjoyed this book. But just a heads up....this book contains a topic that might be a little rough for some people. If you have an issue reading about a child being kidnapped, abused mentally and physically and rapped then don't read this book. Kara's memories and nightmares of the event are detailed and troubling.

When Kara meet Slade it was with the intent to save her brother from going to jail for skimming money from Slade's company. What she get's is a proposal for a husband and new life as a dominant and submissive.

Unbeknownst to Slade his new life includes a wife whose been through a horrific event that was magnified due to how her family dealt with it. His new role as master is one that has become more complex then he ever imagined it would be. With his role clear his only obstacle is Kara's inability to open up and communicate.

This book was amazing in it's character complexities.

Kara marries Slade to save her brother from going to jail for embezzling $30k from Slade's company. Slade is a Dom and has held himself back from that part of himself for a long time until he meets sweet, shy, and innocent Kara. She sparks a need in him to dominate and cherish her. He agrees to forgive the debt and not press charges if she marries him. He does not know that she was kidnapped and raped when she was 7 years old (much more detail to the painful story than that, as the story unfolds). Kara surprisingly finds herself responding to Slade and his lifestyle and it miraculously starts a healing process in her as well. But there is always more fear and memories that haunt her that she stubbornly hangs on to that hold her back from fully giving herself to him, much as she wants to. This is the story of their romance and her journey to understanding and accepting herself and her past.

What an absolutely romantic story. It's raw and painful at times. You can't get away from that due to her horrendous and pain filled past experiences. But Slade is the ultimate loving hero and perfect Dom and husband for Kara. As the details of her past emerge, he works tirelessly to help understand and heal her. They fall in love rather quickly but the connection between them is so utterly powerful it was unavoidable. Who would have thought that a "lifestyle" such as d/s could be such a perfect fit for these two, considering the hell she had to overcome. It was achingly painful but very realistic and truly a loving story. Neither was over-the-top tough or weak. They were perfect for each other and it was a thought-provoking read.

I can't say it was your typical heart-warming romance because it was so chalk-full of heavy and serious content. But that was very understandable and also tolerable (and I mean that in a complimentary way, because of the serious issues of child rape involved). I read it in ebook format. It was 375 pages long. That was a bit lengthy for me. That would be my absolute only "criticism", if you will. But I totally hung in there and it was a very good first book for this author.

Well done, and good luck on upcoming books! Looking forward to checking them out.

This is a story that really teases out the after-damage from a childhood/rape/imprisonment of a woman when she and her twin were seven years old, and whose life has literally been shut down emotionally as a result. Her brother's gambling problem has put her in financial difficulty, not because she is driven to pick up the pieces of his disasters, but because her mother's health is fragile and she doesn't want her brother to go to jail. The man from whom the brother has stolen the $30K (creative bookkeeping) gives her a choice: allow him to turn the brother over to the authorities, or marry him. This novel is rooted in the Dom/Sub relationship style, but truthfully, I have not ever read a story where the Dom is so incredibly caring and tender, so careful and thoughtful about this woman whose past damage begins to emerge on their honeymoon and which becomes the main factor in their growing regard for one another. There are times it seems to be repetitive, but truthfully, I don't think so. It is so realistic--addressing that kind of past horror is not something into which anyone should rush. There are layers to this story that keep on appearing, and by the time I finished I was deeply moved at the loving and care of this man for his wife.

This book was a bit of a disappointment. The concept was interesting and I was interested to see how this author handled a D/s relationship. While there were similarities with other books on the topic, how quickly problems were solved made me feel incredulous.

Ms. Aaron handled the topic of sexual child abuse sensitively enough, but I just didn't think that this woman would have fallen in love so quickly. The pages and pages of inner dialog was at first interesting, but mostly just ended up being repetitive and annoying.

But, here are the two reasons that I gave this a 2 star instead of 3:

1. The porn version of spelling "come" for orgasm. Really? Come on now. I think we can all feel the moment just as well if we spelled it as "come" or even orgasm.

2. Was there even a proof reader for this? I did get the Kindle version, so perhaps there was technical reason, but continuously there were missing " " when dialogue happened. I started reading the book to proof-read it rather than enjoying the book. Not a good sign.

Both of these things could easily have been fixed and caused me to be disappointed in the book. That being said, I have read it a few times, although I usually have difficulty finishing the book because I loose interest.

I quite enjoyed reading Alyssa Aaron's His Perfect Submissive, at time the story brought tears to my eyes and pulled at my heart, at times I wanted to coddle and comfort Kara and at times I wanted to give Slade the strength he seemed to need to help Kara. I liked how the two of them did their best to overcome the obstacles in their way; how Slade would try his best to look after Kara and how Kara would in turn, do her best to be the wife that Slade said he desired from their marriage. My only regret is that I haven't picked it up and revisited them in a while, I've owned two copies of this book, after I sent one copy away to a bookstore, feeling I no longer desired to revisit the characters who had so thoroughly wrapped themselves around my heart, thankfully I was able to purchase a second copy of the book and have enjoyed revisiting Kara and Slade immeasurably. I just hope that I will someday find more books by this author and enjoy them as thoroughly as I've enjoyed reading Kara and Slade's story.

The whole thing was a bit too moody for my liking. It was as if an angsty teen wrote a melodramatic tale for english class. And then early on their was a serious eww factor - when they were having sexual contact for the first time, she kept comparing it to when she was a child, in like, I haven't touched a penis since I was seven, thoughts in her brain - that nearly had me stopping as it was to gross
Now, the story was good, once you got past that, but it seemed to be in a total loop. She agreed to be his submissive, lied, then she agreed again, lied, agreed, told him about the rape, and then he turned her loose, then she agreed again, and she lied, he found out, and she agreed again, then HEA
A couple of revelation episodes would've sufficed, and it seemed extra repetitive because she revealed thoughts in her head and again when she talked to Slade, so double the angst!

I really wanted to like this book, and it had a few moments where I was cheering for the characters, but the truth is, the story is just too drawn out and too repetitive. The author did a nice job of establishing a story line and some likeable characters, but the editing leaves something to be desired. If the book was half as long, it could have still accomplished the same purpose, and would have been a much better read. I would have appreciated a more varied vocabulary too. I was getting really tired of the words "bottom" and "cajoled." All in all it was okay for a mild D/s relationship, but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Kara has suffered a very tramatic experience when she was younger. The pain not only tore through her but also her family, leaving deep scars. Slade sees Kara as the one he has been looking for, not knowing that she has a lot of baggage. Once married Slade realizes that Kara needs more help to battle her demons and he will need to take drastic measures. I can not fathom how it would feel to be raped at seven years old nor handle the nightmares of even being touched as you grew up. I liked that Slade was a strong dominate that he stepped in and helped Kara. I knew a little bit about d/s but felt I understood it more after reading this story. There is a lot more to it then I thought.

For a book that was 297 pages - it was both rushed in places and also too long. I liked the concept of the story - H being blackmailed into marring the H to save her brother. And the abuse from her childhood was horrific. I agree with others that have said she needed this type of relationship to get over her fears of the past. I disagree with others that didnt like the way he went about helping her. I thought it was very tastefully done with just the right amount of dominance.

I really enjoyed His Perfect Submissive, it was the first book of its kind, being of the BDSM sub-genre, that I'd ever read and I was taken by surprise at how much I enjoyed reading about the sweet, loving and caring Kara and the strong, tender, quick-witted Slade who first realizes Kara's natural submissiveness and works at teaching her the tenderness and passion that can be found within their marriage. A very enjoyable read, I will certainly keep Alyssa Aaron on my list of Must-Read authors.
