Another free kindle book; this one was better than many I've read, but still the quality was lacking. The story and the suspense were really well done and there were some parts that were actually very exciting and interesting to read, but for the most part, there was a lot of cliche'd writing and plot points.
The set up for the book was significantly more elaborate than the actual plot of the book: at the start of the book, it was made to seem as though there was a worldwide level of corruption, with children being trained and militarized bases all over the world, but in the end it was just . . . an elaborate bank heist? I ended up liking the tamer version of the story better than the one that it initially hyped itself up to be, so that was fine.
An actual quote from the book: "Kain never broke his gaze into her eyes. It reminded me of the canine gesture of dominance--he was certainly not going to be the first one who looked away." Some one had to WRITE that. and then someone had to read than and go "oh that looks good to me" and it had to be PUBLISHED?!
There was also simply way too much story. It appeared resolved about halfway through the book, and again about three quarters of the way through the book, and again 80% of the wway through the book: it just went ON and ON. There was also a BIZARRE romance subplot that didn't really make sense? and there wasn't really a resolution either.
Overall I did enjoy this story: it needed to be tightened up quite a bit for it to actually be a good book, but the premise was good.
I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book is. I found it on a site where authors who need reviews post their books. This is a great beginning for a new series. Avery Rich has worked hard to advance her career in law enforcement. When she begins her new job as a detective in a new town she knows she will need to work just as hard to solve any case she is assigned to.
Avery's new boss, Commander Calvert, puts her to work on the disappearance of Lawrence Schultz, the president of First National Bank. He tells her to report directly to him and to not discuss the case with anyone. He gives her a piece of paper with a name and tells her this person can help her. Avery meets Ryan Kain at a homeless shelter and is relieved to find out he use to be a police officer. Ryan proves his worth when he spots the man across the street who is following her. Hoping to lose him, they run out the back way and the chase is on.
The plot is interesting and holds together all the way through the story. The characters are well developed and have flaws that make them believable. When I finished the book, I wanted to know what came next for Avery and Ryan; for me, that's a sign of a successful story.I
When detective Avery Rich starts a new job, the last thing she expects is to be acting outside the department to investigate corruption. At least three bankers are missing, but no one has raised the alarm. She’s directed to make contact with Kain, a former detective with a penchant for the unorthodox. Finding him at a shelter for the homeless, she’s pleased when he agrees to help her.
She hasn’t realised what working with the guy entails, especially when there’s a conspiracy afoot and she’s not sure who she can trust in the police department.
This is an exciting thriller with two believable leads, a fast pace and black humour. The story never lets up as the detectives lurch from drama to drama, always trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys. At times, the action is pulsating, leading to a dramatic climax.
Avery Rich has a new job as a detective. Soon, she's forced to keep her investigation "off the record," concerning kidnapped bankers. She's paired with Ryan Kain.
There's romance, danger, and mystery. Cover-ups by criminals that would do anything to kept their secrets secret.
I really enjoyed this book. So much, I have the next book downloaded and ready to read. Avery Rich is an interesting character. Brave and sometimes reckless. Both qualities that contribute to a great story.
The plot was fairly easy to follow. There were surprises with twists and turns. The ending wasn't what I expected. It was great.
This was a fast moving, really good story. Bodies are piling up. Avery and her new consultant, Kain have to break down all the players to find out who and why. The worse part is she can't even trust some of her own coworkers in the police dept. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series. I felt the author connected well with her readers.
Well-written, very few typos, but pretty stilted conversation style. The very beginning threw me off, although I wandered through the story wondering what on earth it was about. Not much was revealed, although some of the characters were interesting. I'll read the second book I got from Goodreads, but I'll have to say, this is not my favorite book today.
Interesting and thought provoking police story. The plot is full of twisting situations. Your interest moves quickly until the ending and final twist or is it just the beginning.
Love these conspiracy theory stories, because they seem so real! The best part of course, is that there are good people fighting behind-the-scenes to keep the public innocent and safe! They are the real supper heroes!
This book was great. It kept you guessing from the beginning. Loved the main characters. Can't wait to read the next book and see what happens to the main characters.
This is a "can not put it down" book. Great story line, excellent writing, suspense from beginning to end, subtle subplot. If you enjoy good mysteries, this has to be added to your reading list!
This book reminded me of the DaVinci Code with the conspiracy undertone. I loved the strong main character and her partner. It definitely left things unresolved and lured me into the next book!
I discovered this book in my library by chance; it was a good find. I've owned this book since 2020, just now read it and I hope this will be the beginning of an excellent series. I rate this book 5 stars and will soon be reading the next in the series.
Really good book. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. The big drawback is all the typographical errors. It's distracting when you're trying to read a sentence with extra inappropriate words.
From the beginning to end the characters and story line keeps your attention. The story line moves at a great pace, twists and turns until you think you know what happens...but..... Well worth the read.
