De Rode Planeet

Onder commando van Jeff Morgan is een Marseskader van de maan vertrokken voor een reis van zes maanden naar de mysterieuze Rode Planeet. In Jeffs vlaggeschip, de 'Discovery', zijn verder aanwezig Mitch, Jimmy en 'de dokter' - dezelfden die destijds de eerste tocht naar de maan hebben gemaakt. Groot zijn de gevaren die een reiziger in het heelal kunnen bedreigen. Dat ontdekten de mannen in de 'Discovery' en de bemanningen van de acht vrachtraketten al spoedig. Reeds vóór de start waren er al onheilspellende voortekenen die Jeff en zijn mannen hadden moeten waarschuwen voor wat hen te wachten stond. Maar op dat ogenblik meenden zij nog dat het om incidentele ongelukjes ging. Tijdens de tocht naar Mars, toen het welslagen van hun reis door bijna spookachtige gebeurtenissen werd bedreigd, drong het echter tot hen door dat hun tegenslagen niet los van elkaar stonden, maar integendeel een gemeenschappelijke oorzaak haddern. Daar was die vreemde ruimtemuziek die uit het niets scheen te komen; die overklaarbare slaap die sommige mannen op de meest ongelegen ogeblikken overviel; daar was Whitaker, de invaller, wiens zonderling gedrag het begin vormde van een reeks onwezenlijke gebeurtenissen die captain Morgan en zijn reisgenoten voor steeds meer raadsels stelden. Die raadsels werden ten dele opgelost, maar niet voor de Marsexpeditie op de Rode Planeet benauwde ogenblikken had doorgemaakt.

I enjoyed it, although was a little unsettled at the change of pace initially. This adventure feels much slower than the first one but I think that change came with a substantial improvement to the storytelling aspect.

I need to spoil the first story so stop reading here if you haven't listened to that one yet.

At the end of the first completely outlandish adventure the whole thing is kind of reset when they time travel home, or at least their memory of the events is sacrificed in order to get home. However, they plant a seed which I had hoped would grow but unfortunately this story completely ignores that opportunity.

I was glad to see the same crew being assembled for the next adventure but I guess initially shocked by the change of pace and lack of callback to their previous discoveries.

I enjoyed the new adventure, a trip to Mars as indicated by the title but it wasn't until the final third of the story that I really started to get into it. The way this story ended really brought it back up to 4 stars for me.

They did tighten up the voice acting as well as the writing. They've chosen one of the main crew (Lemmy, I think it was but don't quote me) to act the scared-y-cat for the comic relief value (which was the humour of the time) but in the first story it was way over the top. He had the same role in this story but it presented much tamer and was a lot more enjoyable.

That's about all of the thoughts that occur to me for this one right now. At the time of writing this I'm actually over half way through the next one and as a little teaser I'll finish by saying that the next one does directly continue from this one and also at least recalls some of the thread of the first one. Exciting stuff!

Het tweede deel in de reeks. Hoeswel het op zichzelf kan gelezen worden, is het toch raadzaam om de reeks in volgorde te lezen omdat elk deel voortbouwt op de vorige boeken. Door de referenties naar de vorige delen en het veronderstellen dat bepaalde zaken al bekend zijn bederft dat toch wel een beetje het leesplezier van de vorige delen als de 'foutieve' volgorde wordt aangehouden.
De hoofdpersonen zijn dezelfde als bij de maanexpeditie uit het vorige deel, waarbij Jeef Morgan de belangrijkste figuur is waar iedereen naar kijkt als er beslissingen moet genomen worden. De dokter is dan weer de ik-figuur van waaruit het verhaal vertelt wordt, dat geeft een mooi gevarieerd perspektief dat het verhaal levendiger maakt.
Voor een boek dat 60 jaar geleden geschreven werdt is het verrassend aktueel nu de marsexpedities weer op tafel komen. Uiteraard is de techniek is vele gevallen hopeloos achterhaald, en in andere, technisch (tot nu toe) onhaalbare hoogstandjes, mogelijk inspiratie voor huidige en toekomstige ingenieurs.
Het 'eeuwige leven' dat de aangepasten op Mars krijgen komt meteen als onmogelijk over maar is in het verhaal wel noodzakelijk om te verklaren waarom sommige aardbewoners niet terug naar de aarde willen (onmiddellijke dood door ouderdom) of niet willen meewerken met Jeff en zijn vrienden, integendeel, ze werken van harte mee met de Martianen.
Het verhaal dateert uit een tijd toen de mensen nog tijd namen om een boek te lezen en bevat dan ook veel meer teksst dan heden ten dage gebruikelijk. Dat geeft de schrijver natuurlijk ook de mogelijkheid tot goed utigewerkte extra plotlijen en meer diepgang.
Ouderwets, verrassend aktueel en heerlijk nostalgisch.

"The Red Planet" is the second of three novels based on the classic British radio series "Journey Into Space". It's a bit slow by modern standards, and the description of Mars is completely wrong, of course. But it's very cleverly written, and a most enjoyable adventure about the first trip to Mars... in 1973!

I would rate it 3.5 stars if that was possible. Its a great book I like the intro where some facts where given. The rest of the story is somewhat cliche but there’s also a few very clever ideas that work well for the plot. Overall I liked it and it made me feel like I made the space trip myself. The writer was successful in making the story come to life.

I would recommend it to sci-fi fans. Everyone else? Maybe not.

it worked much, much better on the radio, of course. As a story, even the radio version was implausible,but at least it was fun. rendered into somewhat plodding prose, this was more a narrative form of what had already been broadcast, without much added.

This was always my favourite in the audio book collection. This didn't disappoint! And I defy anyone, having heard the BBC audio book, not to read it "in their voices"!!! Now onto the 3rd and final chapter...

Als kind luisterde ik ooit naar het beroemde hoorspel "Sprong in het heelal: Het marsmysterie". Ik vond het reuzegriezelig, maar ook bijzonder fascinerend. Nu heb ik de drie hoorspelen van "Sprong in het heelal" als CD, maar de fascinatie blijft. Bij De Slegte kocht ik ooit voor 2,50 gulden de Nederlandse vertaling van "Het marsmysterie". Onlangs heb ik dat boek maar weer eens gelezen, iedere avond voor het slapen gaan een paar pagina's. Het is een boek dat je makkelijk in een dagje uitleest. Het leest ook als het hoorspel, je "hoort" als het ware de verschillende personages spreken.

Op zich is het boek geen hoogvlieger. Het is een Space Opera met weinig diepgang. De wereld waarin het boek zich afspeelt is volstrekt vrouwloos, er komt geen enkele vrouw in het boek voor. Het is een wereld van louter mannen, waarin astronauten macho's zijn die spreken in oneliners. Ook is het verhaal rechtlijnig: er wordt een reis naar de planeet Mars georganiseerd. Onderweg vinden er al mysterieuze gebeurtenissen plaats. Bij aankomst op Mars komen de gebeurtenissen al gauw tot een hoogtepunt wanneer blijkt dat Mars weliswaar een stervende, maar nog altijd geen dode planeet is.

Het boek draait volledig om spanning, suspense en om actie. Leuk is dat ook het ufo-fenomeen (dat in de jaren '50 een van zijn hoogtepunten beleefde) ook nog even in het boek ter sprake komt en een verklaring krijgt die toentertijd tot de verbeelding moet hebben gesproken. Al met al is het een vermakelijk boek, nostalgisch, en brengt het herinneringen boven. En het maakt nieuwsgierig naar het eerste en derde deel van de trilogie (die bij mijn weten niet in het Nederlands vertaald zijn). Misschien dus nog maar eens in het Engels lezen...

The second book in the trilogy. And whilst volume one was a story in its own right, this is really half a tale that is concluded in the final volume.
It's a book of two halves. The first part, the journey from the Moon to Mars, is excellent, creepy in places and entertaining. But when they arrive on Mars, they find out some stuff but not a lot really happens. As the mid section of a longer book it would have been fine, but as the second half of a book it all seemed rather inconsequential. Never mind, still looking forward to the conclusion in the final book which should be out soon.

I loved these books as a child and recently decided to read them again. I still think chilton's books are great, so nothing changed! It's exciting, creepy, scary and funny at the same time. Highly recommended if you like old-school sci-fi :)
