*re-read* I loved this book, if you are looking for something completely different and completely engrossing, with a great romance in the mix then this is your book. This book is like nothing I have ever read before, from word one I was hooked. I wanted to know what was going to happen and I had absolutely no clue how everything would end. The world that is created here is amazing and a little creepy(well really a lot creepy if I lived there) but I say that in a good way. This book is so different and for someone who reads a lot you know that if you find something new and innovative that is something to be truly impressed with.
On a highway that some say is haunted Odessa is on the run. When an accident happens Odessa finds herself taken and entering a world were rules don't apply and it's kill or be killed. The man who takes Odessa brings her to his house where she learns more about this impossible world. After being hurt very badly from the accident Odessa is on the mend but the more she learns from Quill the man who saved her and brought her to his house the more unsure about everything Odessa is.
Quill isn't sure what made him save the woman that day on the highway but he did, and then he brought her home. After the last persons death he said he wouldn't again but there's something about Odessa. She doesn't follow his rules, and though she has fear she does things others wouldn't. Quill knows eventually Odessa will go crazy in this crazy place but the longer she is there the more he is unsure and begins to question everything.
As Quill begins to show her more, and more about this world and open up as much as he ever has the more Odessa finds something she has never had in her life since tragedy struck so long ago. Odessa also begins to feel things for Quill she never has before. Trying to deny and push Odessa away soon becomes an impossible task, but tomorrow is never promised in this lost highway and Quill and Odessa will soon learn what ends they will go to to find their happy ending in this crazy new world.
I loved this book. Is it your typical romance, no and thats why I loved it. I loved Odessa yes she's smart and resilient, she's faced a horrible tragedy and in this crazy place found her redemption. Quill is intense, he has literally never known love or compassion so when Odessa comes storming into his life he has no clue what to do with her or his growing feeling. But when he finally comes to recognize what he is feeling his emotions are intense and all consuming for Odessa(even when he doesn't know what he is feeling).
The first time they are together it is the definition of hot and again for someone who reads romance all the time that is really saying something. I am blown away with the imagination Bijou Hunter had to have create this work of art. The second you think you have a handle on this world you are shown something else that leaves you even more interested and wanting to get to the bottom of it all. That Odessa and Quill could find each other and find beauty in the horrible violent world is amazing. I didn't want to put this book down, and only did when I absolutely had to. I didn't want this book to end, and yet I just wanted to see how this could possibly end. I give serious props to Bijou Hunter for trying something so different and not only that but for pulling it off so magnificently. This is one of those book you won't soon forget.
4.25 stars Lots of dark humor that breaks up this strange book. I love dark humor so I was a happy girl.
Told in alternating chapters of h/H pov. Some sex. Violence but in a creepy humorous way at least it was for me (lol).
I loved the the H/h. h had inner strength & no snark (yay). H was a badass & learned to trust & love. Their HEA definitely had some bumps but in a strange way.
4.25 b/c the writing a few times felt jerky due to the short chapters. KU book that I decided to buy. One of BH best books.
h~ “Do the other Death Dealers think you’re a goody-two-shoes for not eating them?” Quill doesn’t respond, but I laugh quietly at the thought."
h~ "We have Skittles and music and a TV that sometimes works. We have your killing skills and my ability to say encouraging things while you use your killing skills. I’d say we’re pretty lucky.”
H~ "I have feelings. Isn’t rage an emotion? Annoyance? Pride? I feel what I need to feel to survive."
H~ This place has no pity for the weak. The Lost Highway only wants death, and I’m its best dealer.
5 Brutal yet Beautiful Stars!! I honestly don't even know where to begin with this review. This is one of the most original storylines that I have read. While anyone that knows me knows what a big Bijou Hunter fan I am, this is a totally different book than we are used to but no less captivating. I took my time reading this story trying to capture details that stood out to make up this world created.
Odessa finds herself trapped in the world of the Lost Highway after she goes on the run. This world is violent and unforgiving. She is rescued by Quill and brought to his territory. Odessa blew me away with her strength and her ability to look beyond what is in front of her. She had been living with guilt for many years and suffered so much. Yet this new world awakens something in her. Most people would have just cowered in the corner and given up. Odessa does the opposite. She not only fights for survival but fights for Quill.
Quill knows nothing but killing. His only concern is protecting his territory. How Quill came to be in the Lost Highway and what made him the man he is will all be explained. The transition that we see Quill go through from the start of the book to the end is phenomenal. He fights this transition every step of the way but it is inevitable.
I am not going to go into much more of the story because it honestly just needs to be experienced without any preconceived notions. Along with this crazy world that we find ourselves in, we also get to see what builds between Quill and Odessa. They were truly two lost souls for such different reasons.
This is classified as a paranormal romance which I guess it is but I thought it was so much more. The imagination and creativity that went into this story blows me away. This story is different than all of the others out there that I have read.
Lost Highway was a standalone horror paranormal romance by Bijou Hunter. I read it for a group challenge and both horror and paranormal were new genres for me.
It was told in a dual POV by both Odessa and Quill. The Lost Highway was a Highway of terror. Odessa Miller survived a car crashed to then be chased by a slew of death dealers. She was saved by the attractive Quill but she was a prisoner. He wasn't much of a savior.
As the story unfolded, we learned of Odessa's tragic life and secrets as well as Quill's life before the Lost Highway. Odessa and Quill both needed healing. The world of the Lost Highway produced negativity and played on ones sanity. Hunter spun a dark journey that revealed embracing love and laughter was the key to remaining sane.
Lost Highway was well written, well developed, creative and entertaining. Although not my typical genre, I'm open to more from Hunter.
wow! wow. wow. wow. I don't know what to say other than that book goes straight to my alltime favorites folder and I know for sure it will stay on my mind for a few days. very well done bijou hunter :)

Feels like you are in a Twilight Zone/Hotel California Zone you get in and you can't get out feel to it. Even after finish reading, my head is still spinning.
This book is not my cuppa of tea
FYI: You do not put a woman in a coffin without warning!!! Really!!!

I haven't read many Horror romances but I've read this author in the past, so I decided to give it a shot.
Odesss was weak. It's hard to explain with out giving too much away, but I kept wanting her to put her big boy pants on and take back her life. Once she did I was in awe of how amazing she was.
Quill is definitely a strange one. I liked him, but it took me a while to get into the mind set. He was really rough around the edges but he had this natural protective instinct that was sweet even though it was a little weird.
I wasn't really sure how this story was going to go, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much the plot drew me in. It's not my typical read, but I enjoyed it. The whole concept of this "highway" was very interesting.
This isn't a fuffy fall in love romance. So if that's what your looking for, keep looking. This book has gore, it's twisted, but still has a romance story deep down.. 3.5/4 stars #2OCCJD
A lonely stretch of road that can never be exited, an inverted alternate reality dimension, a warped parallel universe inhabited by humanlike creatures that regularly descend into madness, an isolated, chaotic microcosm of butchery, cannibalism and savagery-based trade... Lost Highway is, hands down, the single most unique romance/erotica narrative I’ve ever read. Perhaps the most imaginative one I’ll ever read.
There is no sense of temporal progression. No up or down. No exit. The climate is all screwy. The residents of the lost highway all deranged killers. Our desperate heroine departs for this bizarre world to lose herself, only to end up finding herself.
This novella gets major points from me for sheer originality. It is so incredibly creative and the fact that the readers never get any of their questions answered and are never given any clarification only serves to further bolster this already tight, otherworldly narrative.
It gets points for giving us a virgin male lead. It gets points for its unapologetic, sexually liberated heroine. It gets points for the nightmarish setting. It gets points for the unresolved mysteries. It gets points for inventive sex scenes and unconventional dialogue. It gets points for its brutal currency and barter system. It gets points for being so unflinchingly brazen in its distinctiveness.
I loved, loved, loved basically everything about this memorable novella and will most definitely check out some of Bijou Hunter’s other works in the future. Way to prove there’s still room for bold, illogical inventiveness in this stale genre!
I’ve never read a book like this before. This book is beyond a Dangerous Hero story line. This book was like The Langoliers, and The Walking Dead smashed up to make up such an intense love story. It true Bijou fashion she writes the jerky hero so well. I loved it. Love, Love, Loved it.
This was was my first read by this author and first time read with this genre. This was a nice quick read. The story was well written with strong character build. This book was just 'okay. There is nothing memorable about it to me, that makes me want to read it again.
Odessa is on the run. From her past, from her blood stained hands. She has no idea where shes headed or if she'll make it. Picking up a lonely hitchhiker may have been a good idea at the time, but taking her advice on hopping on Rt 202 -the Lost Highway- wil seal her fate.
When an ambush sends her careening toward a certain death -wether inside the car or out- all she know is that she needs to survive. What happens when she runs quite literally into one of the most violent men on the Lost Highway?
This is my confession: In the simplest explanation, Lost Highway is a perfect mixture of The Twilight Zone and Hotel California -you can check out but you can never leave. If you are looking for a typical PN romance, you will no find it here. What you will find is a uniquely written gem that embraces the gore - something taboo in the genre. Definitely a book for the more morbid minded
For me, everything that Bijou Hunter writes, I read and love. Lost Highway is no exception.
This book was a little different from her previous books, meaning that there is a paranormal aspect to this book. The gore level was highly present, but not in your face (collecting heads for barter, the torture room, etc.)
I look forward to more in this series (if that is the plan) so that questions may be answered like, where is the lost highway, is it an alternate universe, what is up with the people in the sky, how do you get out of the lost highway and what happened to Kim?
Favorite line:
"you hit me in the head with a bat" - Quill to Odessa "something you took like a champ" - Odessa to Quill
This is a hard review to write because I don't want to disclose much more than is already in the blurb. I would say that this book was more of a fantastical horror romance than paranormal romance. Paranormal just puts thoughts of werewolves, vampires and demons in my head and this was way different from what I was expecting (and that is definitely not a bad thing). This story made me think of the first season of Lost or even more aptly, a kinky version of Supernatural (I am not going to say which storyline because that would give too much away, but it was within the last 5 years). Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book but it left me wanting more!
Well that was certainly different from what Bijou Hunter writes and what I read in general, but it was still good. I could tell it was her writing through the inner and outer dialogue. Wondering if this was a parallel universe or a version death. I suppose we're left to think about it. And what is the 'company'? Why do the other highway people go crazy? I would recommend, but beware of the horror movie scenes.
didn't think it was possible I have read lots of books by this author and I have loved them all but I really didn't care for this book .... just being honest this one really didn't do it for me and honestly I was kinda depressed with this one ... I like books that end with a HEA and this one wasn't really a HEA for me I still LOVE LOVE LOVE this author though
When I heard that Bijou was going to write a paranormal book I got excited.I usually love Ms. Hunter's books, but this story was just not my cuppa tea. I found that I kept reading this story to find out what was going on. In the end, I am still not quite sure.
ARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I love this author. The books are always so well written. The way the author brings you into the story and hooks you can't be touched. The characters are developed in a way that you feel like you have known them your whole life and can't wait to learn more about them.
It was very different from what I was expecting, but in a good way, my only problem is that it feels unfinished, I mean just because Odessa and Quill got their closure I didn't, I can't help feeling that I need more then they living happily ever after...
