Ahogy a Bélügyek fiatal szerzőjét elbűvölte az emésztőrendszerünk működése, úgy lett Johannes Hinrich von Borstel a szívünk és érrendszerünk elkötelezett rajongója. Akárcsak Enders, Borstel is számos nagy sikerű előadást tartott a Science Slam rendezvényein.
This book had potential, but von Borstel's outrageously incorrect statements regarding dietary risk factors completely threw it out the window.
To be clear: The human body does not require dietary cholesterol consumption in order to be healthy. The contrary is far closer to the truth. Carbohydrates do not cause diabetes. Too many calories rich in saturated fats do. Grave factual errors like these are bound to taint the credibility of any author. The many awkward attempts at humor aren't flattering, either.
Kaip medicininė knyga, parašyta labai šmaikščiai (na, kas dar sugalvotų pateikti dainos "Highway to hell" ritmą, kurio galima laikytis gaivinant žmogų?). Kartu yra ir informacijos. Gal tikėjausi jos daugiau. Bet šiaip gana nebloga knyga.
I won this book in a goodreads give away and I am ever so grateful. This book about the heart is a must read for every person who has a heart. After all we all have one and we need to know how it works, and what can go wrong so we can have a life that is as long and as healthy as we can make it. Johannes von Borstel has managed to write a witty, entertaining and informative book about the heart covering every aspect in masterly detail and yet in a way that anyone at all can understand. It is written in an every day language to allow everyone to read this book and follow the explanations easily. Where needed, easily understandable graphs and drawing have been added. My first impression was so good that I offered to send this book to a friend of mine who had just been told she had a bit of an arrhythmic heartbeat when I was through with it. But the more I read the more I realized that this book is one of the greatest resources in terms of information about the heart I own and that I would not be able to part with it. So I ordered my friend her own copy and had it sent straight to her. She too is now reading all about the heart and loves the easy to understand information this book provides. I will also take this book to my book group to introduce them to it and ask my libraries to order a copy of their own. As I am a member of 9 libraries it will take some time to do this, but this book is very important to have as a resource in every library. I hope others will also suggest this book to their libraries. It will be a great help to so many people who need to read about the heart in clear, easy to understand plain English. Thank you Johannes von Borstel for writing this book and to goodreads and to the person who sent this to me. I am very grateful. I first wrote this on April 14th 2017. I have since re-read portions of the book because I developed tachycardia and I have bought my own stethoscope just to listen to what's going on in there. The book has been invaluable to me. Thank you again for writing it Johannes Hinrich von Borstel.
No matter how much we know about our own bodies (laypeople among us I mean), there's always more fascinating facts out there, and it can never hurt to learn more.
With a feel of a 'Confessions of a GP', this veers between biology, anecdote and advice, in an entertaining look at something we all possess.
The biology isn't glossed over, and it was a little harder keeping up with it in audiobook format, not being able to see every term written down, but I did learn a fair amount from this and remembered to both appreciate and try to look after my heart.
Some things weren't surprising - we should eat more (raw) vegetables. There were some moving stories from the author's time as paramedic, where similar cases have very different outcomes. I liked hearing the differences and underlying science between various heart defects and complaints.
This is the sort of book that makes you reconsider your diet and exercise regimes, and quite rightly so.
Quite brief, but contains much - as does the heart!
Heart was an extremely fun read for me because of my interest in medicine and the heart. Johannes gives a spectrum of knowledge about the heart woven into personal anecdotes that brings the content to life. In depth medical concepts were easily understood with the use of a light, colloquial style which I thoroughly enjoyed. I would read another book about other medical topics written by Johannes in a heart beat!

Aranyos ismeretterjesztő könyv, szórakoztató kis sztorikkal próbálják benne befogadhatóvá tenni a tudományos magyarázatokat.
Also, lesen 😉!
Written in a way that is both educational but also very easy to understand/relatatble, this book is a wonderful read for anyone wanting to learn more about how the heart - and body work. Having had some training in the heart, it was nice to see things I've been taught reiterated in this book, but also put in a way that most anyone can understand. A pretty quick and enjoyable read - much more so than you might think when looking at a book about the heart ;)
The illustrations are so cute and nice. It was an interesting book for me and I did learn quote a fair bit about the heart. If you are looking for a fairly light (this would not be too light) or a less serious book on science, this would be a good step in that direction.
I can't speak from the view of a non-science person as I am a science person.
A popular science book that describes the main processes of the cardiovascular system. Complicated things with understandable language and analogies, specific doctors' sense of humor. The ideal format for young people and children.
Somewhat corny but entirely informative. An easy starter book on heart related matters. I would have preferred if the author focused more on cardiac issues and treatments and got rid of some of the wishy-washy content.
