A practical, illustrated, and scientifically grounded guide to improving your running technique and preventing injury, written by a kinesiologist
In North America alone, thirty-seven million people run regularly, and most suffer at least one running-related injury a year. Run Better sets out to help runners of all abilities run smarter and injury-free by reviewing the proper mechanics of running and the role of shoes; providing training programs (from 5K to marathon distances) that promote rest and cross-training for adequate recovery; offering 90 running-specific exercises and technical drills to build strength, reinforce proper posture, encourage flexibility, improve mobility, and optimize breathing; and explaining 42 common running injuries and the ways to prevent and alleviate them.
Illustrated with more than 150 color photographs, 50 black-and-white line drawings, and 20 charts and tables, Run Better is an easy to use and authoritative running handbook for anyone who wants to improve their running efficiency and decrease their risk of injury.
Good pictures to depict stretches, warmups and technical drills. I liked learning about how to build your own program and using their given programs to help improve your times for a certain distance. I also like learning about the biomechanics of running and what proper form looks like as to prevent injuries and to “run properly” before too many bad habits are established.
Learning about the Kalenjin runners and seeing how much padding their feet have and their calf size was interesting. While i’m not striving to be a competitive runner, it is cool to learn about people who have been excelling at running for years.
I don’t have many other running books to compare it to, aside from ‘Run Your Butt Off’, but this felt like a good running manual to keep coming back to.
This book contains a ton of great information about proper running techniques, injury avoidance, and training tips. The exercises and stretches were well explained and easy to follow. Everything is laid out really well, and the chapters are broken down in a way that makes them not monotonous. I read this as an ebook and am actually considering buying the print version so I can more easily refer back to it.
Excellent book, with lots of sage advice, which seems to be based on very pertinent and relevant research - both academically and in the field. Some of the training plans are a bit rudimentary. The various exercises to work different areas and concerns (e.g. mobility, flexibility, etc) are brilliantly laid out.
An excellent guide that explains the physiology and the mentality for long distance training. I would appreciate it if it did run through some basic examples of supplement workouts and HIIT workouts to complement your running system.
