Joette McClane’s life has gone from the happiest it could ever be to heartbreak with the deaths of her parents. Now living with her grandma and aunt, trying to put the pieces of her life back together, a school assignment shocks the life back into Joey- an essay on the weregals, a race of werecats who disappeared from the mountains of West Virginia nearly twenty years ago. As luck, or fate, would have it, not only does Joey stumble across the first weregal seen in years, but what Kev knows about Joey will turn her world upside down. But Kev’s not the only creature lurking in the West Virginia pines, and these other creatures might not be so friendly. Armed with her peculiar sense of smell, Joey and her friends set out to discover the truth behind these mysterious strangers who have their sights set on Joey, but will the price of truth be too much to pay? Perfect Scents is a clean Young Adult Paranormal Romance. There is little to no sexual content or violence.
Truly entertaining! A very different and creative spin on shifters with a little sci-fy mixed in (no, really). Not your typical trope, which I always like. I was immediately pulled into the mystery behind Joette's unknown birthfather and her own unusual lineage. All the characters were well fleshed out and the storyline solid and kept you moving throughout. It really ramped up at the end, and without giving spoilers, I now am forced to read the sequel to find out what happens, or I'm going to go crazy! Loved the relationship between Joey and Kev, very reminiscent to the Twilight series. Definitely a YA paranormal that I would recommend for teenagers as well as adults.
An enjoyable journey, because that is what it is. It begins as a read and becomes so vivid in your mind you would swear you are living it rather than reading. Awaiting her next book eagerly.
Joette lived a happy life. Until her step dad passed away and then her mum passed. Living with her Gram and Aunt Gwen, Joette tried to piece her life back together. But a strange assignment on Weregals, a race of werecats that disappeared from the mountains of West Virginia before Joette was even born. Joette is just that luck to stumble across the first Weregal to be seen in years, but what Kev knows about Joette will shock her and turn her world upside down. But Kev isn't the only creature roaming West Virginia and these other creatures might not be friendly. Joette has had a strangely strong sense of smell all her life and with the help of her friends, Joette must find out the truth behind what the other creatures want before it the price becomes too high. So I had this one sitting on my kindle for who knows how long before I jumped at it. But it was constantly calling my name so I just had to pick it up and read it. And I just... I had no words. I was so glad that I had the next book on my kindle ready to go because I absolutely love, love, LOVE the Weregals. The Perfect Scents was unlike most were-shifter books I have read and I loved it so much and spent every spare moment reading. Joey felt so realistic and I was able to picture the whole book in my head. I'm highly recommending Perfect Scent! Heather Karn has a way with words and I will be jumping at any books or novellas she writes without even knowing what the books is about! 'A sad smile crossed his face, and his tenor voice trembled as he spoke. "Will that help you?" "It's the only thing that will help." "Then I will run with you for however fat or however long you wish. I will run your entire world if it helps you."'
A YA teen shifter romance. The idea of Bengal tiger shifters was new for me, and it wasn't the same old werewolf/vampire that gets tired and has been done a thousand times. The characters were believable, especially the main character, Joey. Her hesitation towards wanting to go along with everything, like having a mate and believing in weregals, and that the whole town was up to something. She was skeptical at first, and that made me like her.
I wish the main guy could pick if he wanted to be dominant or submissive. True, I don't necessarily like the whole bossy, Alpha male thing, but Kev went from bossy to pushover back to bossy. I think Heather was going for Kev trying to be accommodating, but it came off as more wishy-washy. This doesn't mean I didn't like him. Just that there is room for improvement.
Add in the typical, ever loving best friend and we have our main cast. What is not so typical is the rest of the town and the mysterious "stinky" people. You will have to read the book to find out who they are. I really like how she mixed them into the story and built the mystery around the sour-smelling folks.
In the end, there were a lot of unanswered questions. BUT, since this is book one in a series, I was expecting that. Hopefully, Book 2 will address these issues before bringing in new ones.
Overall, it was an entertaining, easy, and fun read.
3.5 star rating (generously rounding up). This book was definitely a YA read. The story was entertaining & held my interest, though not enough to stay up late to finish. I wasn't as fond of the h/H characters. I felt like Joette (Joey) wasn't very bright at times, she never seemed to ask any questions with Kev that would have helped with the situation. As a sensitive nosed person (definitely not like hers though!), I could relate to some of the issues she had with the sense of smell so heightened (little old ladies bathing in perfume, or young guys covered in 1/2 a bottle of Axe body spray can take me down!). Kev's character seemed a bit off, one minute he's a dominant pushy alpha personality, the next he's crying, the 2 sides just didn't seem to mesh for me. The story flowed ok for the most part, there were a few spots that just seemed to drag. Some parts of the plot just didn't feel realistic (like how a town could keep Weregals a secret from the rest of the world). I understand the use of the word "Weregals" as the name for the shifter, but I just didn't like it. It almost felt degrading. A Bengal tiger is a majestic beast. The name used made me think of the Hollywood couples that combine parts of names for the paparazzi or press today. I think the YA group would enjoy this more than I did. Not sure I would want to read the rest of the series.
This book is actually a 4.5 because of the damn cliffhanger that came out of nowhere plus the end felt a bit rushed in my opinion. But other wise the book was marvelous since it gave me a glimpse into a new kind of were people plus it kept us on the edge trying to get to know what gave that sour smell. The dynamic between Charissa and Joey it was much needed since most of the times the friends instantly rejects the other when they're weird. The antics of Kev about his lack of human knowledge was awfully hilarious
I love shifter stories and it was refreshing to find one with a new twist and outlook on the genre.
Thebook was a pleasant read with relatable characters. You’re quickly drawn into the storyline and the relationship between Jolette and Kev. Now if only my mate can find me and tell me I’m actually secretly a tiger-shifter (don’t tell my husband I said that).
I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book in the series.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Perfect Scents by Heather Karn is a delightful story of a girl coming to age, not only with a romantic interest, but also who she really is. It is a fun read with twists that will leave you wondering what is going on right up to the end.
This book rocks!!!! The characters and the storyline are fantastic. There is so much great stuff, this book will make you laugh, cry and want to strangle everyone. I cannot with to start book 2
