This is a fantastic resource for writers from many different industries, but especially fiction. Savage breaks down some difficult topics into bite-sized chunks, which are easy to read and understand.
As a writer, I'm always looking for new perspectives and ideas to help build settings and characters, and that's exactly what I found. Even though I read through the entire book from start to finish, I found myself revisiting sections relevant to projects I'm currently working on, generating new ideas in the process.
Will this book work for everyone? Probably not, but in all aspects covered, but it does give writers like myself a lot to think about, and that can only inspire creativity.
Savage has a pithy style, which makes some of the more relatively dry chapters more entertaining and fun. I think he has an interesting perspective to view the world as an additional character, although I do feel that he underestimates the importance of having really good characters. Good characters drive the story, not an interesting location. I feel that this is almost always true. Still, Savage's ideas about world building are helpful and with great characters this will only improve a story.
The book started off with too much repetition, but once that straightened out, the content gave me a lot to think about as I go about crafting fantasy worlds for my novels. Already recommended to a friend who had questions about setting in her work-in-progress.
A handy guide to Worldbuilding that I found quite helpful. It covers many topics and gave me several ideas to try out. The editing was a little rough and I found that somewhat distracting but overall the concepts within the pages were clear.
He kinda repeats himself... A lot, and in some points just don't go as deep as you'd want him to. Nevertheless is a great tool for starting on worldbuilding.
