Jill Tomlinson never intended to be a writer. She trained as an opera singer, and then decided to have a family whilst her voice matured. But illness intervened, and she had to find another outlet for her energies. She started on a journalism course, and by the third lesson decided she wanted to write for children. So she did! Jill Tomlinson’s animal stories are much-loved and have been best-selling children’s books for nearly four decades.

După ce am lecturat Bufnița care se temea de întuneric, am fost extrem de încântată de următoarea carte scrisă de Jill Tomlison care avea să apară la editura Nemi. Nu a mai durat mult, și am lecturat Gorila care voia să se facă mare. Nu am fost la fel de captată de poveste, nu m-am amuzat la fel de mult ca la prima menționată, dar mi-a făcut plăcere să o lecturez.

Această cărticică este una numai bună pentru copii și toți cei care doresc să revină cu gândul la copilărie. Dacă doriți să vă relaxați, această carte, dar și celelalte din serie, sunt numai bune pentru a vă fi alături, și a vă oferi câteva clipe în care să zâmbiți.



Personajul principal al cărții este un pui de gorilă pe nume Pongo. Acesta trăiește alături de celelalte gorile, iar tatăl său este șeful tuturor. Pe zi ce trece, Pongo observă lucrurile pe care le face tatăl lui, și își dorește să crească și el pentru a putea fi o gorilă mare și puternică.

Am asistat la evoluția lui Pongo, dezvoltarea lui, dorința de a fi de ajutor și a primi mai multe responsabilități pentru a-și ajuta familia și semenii.

Mi s-a părut o cărticică drăguță și ilustrațiile întâlnite au fost numai bune pentru a mă încânta și vizual. ^_^ Dacă vă plac cărțile pentru copii, v-o recomand pentru zilele când aveți câteva clipe libere pentru citit.

A charming story about Pongo, a young gorilla who wants to grow up to be a great troop leader like his dad The Big Boss. A nice introduction to chapter books for animal loving readers aged 7-10, there's just the right amount of heart, funny moments and mild peril/ adventure in this book to hold a child's interest right to the end.

Expresiile “ne batem cu pumnii în piept” și “ne umflăm în pene” sunt bineînțeles doar niște figuri de stil pentru că noi, oamenii, având în vedere că nu suntem înzestrați cu pene, nu prea avem cum să ne umflăm în ele, și nici nu ne batem la propriu cu pumnii în piept atunci când ne lăudăm în gura mare cu cine știe ce realizare avem impresia că am obținut. Dacă ne-am bate la propriu cu pumnii în piept, nu numai că s-ar auzi doar un sunet înfundat, care nu ar impresiona pe nimeni, dar ne-am umple și de vânătăi pe piept, situație în care ar fi necesar să dormim doar pe spate pentru o perioadă mai îndelungată.

Marele Șef Tati, conducătorul grupului de gorile cu care vom face cunoștință în această carte, se bate la propriu cu pumnii în piept, pentru că așa fac gorilele șefi atunci când doresc să le reamintească animalelor din junglă cu cine vor avea de-a face dacă le trece prin minte vreun gând necurat. Fiul său, Pongo, care vrea și el să fie mare și puternic așa cum este tatăl lui, încearcă mai tot timpul să-l imite, numai că sunetul pe care îl produce această operațiune este atât de slab, încât nici măcar Pongo nu prea îl aude foarte bine…

Pongo este însă un pui de gorilă care nu renunță niciodată la planurile sale de viitor iar Zambi, cel mai bun prieten al său, este mereu alături de el, așa cum îi șade bine unui prieten adevărat.

Poate aveți cumva impresia că aceste două minigorile sunt cele mai mici din grup? Dacă da, aflați că impresia voastră este greșită, pentru că Hopa, surioara lui Pongo, este și mai mică, ba chiar mult mai mică, practic este foarte greu de crezut că există în lume o ființă mai mică decât Hopa, asta dacă excludem insectele.

Și pe cât e de mică, pe atât de jucăușă și curioasă este Hopa numai că ea, fiind lipsită de experiență, încă nu-și dă seama care lucruri sau locuri sunt periculoase și care nu sunt. Pongo este însă mereu cu ochii pe Hopa și o apără ori de câte ori este nevoie, pentru că dacă vrei să fii șef, trebuie să îți asumi și niște responsabilități.

Iar voi, dragi copii, atunci când veți citi “Gorila care voia să se facă mare”, o să puteți descoperi de ce, atunci când Marele Șef Tati se va pensiona și nu va mai fi conducătorul grupului, singurul care va merita pe deplin să fie Mare Șef nu va putea fi altul decât Pongo!

Part of a whole series of animal stories, including The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark and The Otter Who Wanted to Know, also illus. by Susan Hellard, whose illustrations are really cute. This story was really quite interesting. It seemed quite true to gorilla life and behaviour, although it did skirt around the issue of sexuality - i.e. there is one Big Boss and they talk of having wives in the plural but Pongo is his oldest son and calls him Da; Pongo's friend, the next oldest, Zambi, usually says 'Your Da' implying he has a different one, but once or twice does call him 'Da' too. Basically Pongo is growing up and learns from Da how to become a lead gorilla; issues of conflict are displaced when Da notes that he is getting old and wants Pongo, who is so helpful, to take over, and Zambi agrees to stay and help too, rather than go and start his own troop. Signal that is time for Pongo to take over is when he gains a silver back; signal time for Da to retire is when he turns silver all over. Pongo grows up by looking after his sister Whoopsie, getting too big to sleep on the branch with mother and having to nest on the ground, helping Da with moving the troop by taking the rearguard, and so on. It was pretty sweet, an all right read.

Poate că nu-mi plac gorilele, sau poate că nu am rezonat eu cu poveastea asta, dar copiilor le-a plăcut. Aici dau puncte strict pentru părerea mea subiectivă. Nu știu cum e vidra și găina, dar primele trei mi-au plăcut mai multe decât aceasta. Însă e bine ca copiii să facă cunoștință cu un spectru larg de animale, nu doar cu cele moi, pufoase și drăguțe.
Pongo este un pui de gorilă, fiul marelui conducător. Toată ziulica se joacă cu Zambi – prietenul său. Dar curând apare Hopa – surioara lui mai mică și responsabilitățile lui Pongo, treptat, cresc. Zi de zi el învață tot mai multe lucruri noi care cu siguranță îi vor prinde bine atunci când se va face suficient de mare pentru a deveni conducător.

4 ⭐️ este o lectură ușoară, o poveste încântătoare despre relația frate-soră și tată-fiu. Gorila voia să fie mare și era mare față de sora lui ce tocmai s-a născut, dar era mic și tânăr față de tatăl lui, Marele Șef. Îmi place când citesc cărți pentru copii să desprind o învățătură din ele. Exact ca la pilde. Cred ca din această poveste învățăm ca timpul nu exista, nu putem suprinde timpul, e relativ, căci exact cum ne spune în carte Pongo a devenit mare atunci când s-a născut surioara lui Hopa.

This is my first review, and appropriately (for me anyway), this is the very first book that I can remember reading.
It was at least 28 years ago, so forgive me if my memory is sketchy... Sod it, who am I kidding, I read this book 28 years ago, my memory is almost non-existent!

All I can really say is that I felt some sort of connection with this book and Pongo (the main character) as I got it out of the library (Harrow Green in East London if anyone is wondering), several times.

It's about a gorilla who wants to be a 'silverback', i.e. leader of the troop like his dad. I think he got there in the end, but I can't say for certain right now. I've seen the book on Amazon, and it's only a penny, but hey, credit crunch and all that, I don't have two of them to rub together, let alone waste one on silly sentimentality!

So, if it wasn't for this book, would I have ever become the book worm that I am today?

Should I downgrade all my other '5-star' books as they can't on that basis, be as important to me as this one?

Or maybe I should email Goodreads and ask them to change the status quo to 10-star ratings? Oh yeah, I already have, they said no!

Anyway, onto the review.

Great book, buy it, enjoy it and pass it onto your kids.

Pongo is a charming young gorilla. He learns about the differing roles of his family and the community in which he lives. Through play with his young sister (Whoopsie) and his friends he finds his future role in life which is to be the leader of the gorilla troop.
This story could be about any family with growing children in Britain today, and as a result I feel that it is very relatable. It's illustrations will delight younger readers, and the text will appeal to all readers. Suitable for KS1 and up.

Listened to this on audio book. Love Jill Tomlinson's books. They are sweet stories for young children that deal with life and growing up.
This particular one a gorilla grows and learns to take on more and more responsibility, eventually taking the place of his father, the great silver back of the group.

Sweet story.
