Don't you just hate when you pick something up, most reviews five stars and you're so exited but then it turns out to be a massive dissapointment?
Minor spoilers ahead
Pros:
-Short
-The prose was nice, easy to read and the dialogue quick and fun, some of the banter was actually kind of nice
Cons:
-It lacked depth. Frankly, this read as some weak sauce Walking Dead fanfic and not a real book. Nothing is remotely realistic, the end of the world happened like, 2 weeks ago, but like I said it feels like TWD season five or something, the concept of the illness was somewhat interesting, but it wasn't explored at all. There was no world building of any sort, we never found out why it happened, or how or if the entire planet was affected or what consequences it brought forth or anything really! I just couldn't get invested in the situation whatsoever.
-Characters are one dimentional and unrealistic. Not much to add, other than both of them were mary sue op rambos and no explanation was given as to why (ok fine, Creed was a marine, but still)
(also, his name is bloody Creed, I mean, author is just a fan girl isn't she?) Nina being a teacher was lame, it never came into play in the story, as convenient as it would've been I would have preferred she being a doctor or army chick or something like that. I get her grandma taught her, but that also felt contrived, like why was her grandma Chuck Norris you know?
-The sex was boring and annoying. I like erotica, I really do, but in such a short book, that desperately needed the page count for more important things to happen, so many sex scenes felt really unnecesary. If they weren't so bland and repetitive it wouldn't be such a problem, but they were simply bad, they had like zero chemistry or tension.
-Insta love. No more to say, I just really dislike this trope.
-Nothing felt dangerous. There is no tension to the story whatsoever, they get into a couple of scuffles but it never felt like they were in actual danger. Everything got resolved very quickly and easily, the "action" scenes were pretty much over before they began, which means despite it only being like 224 pages, it was fairly boring for most of the second half. The only real "bad guy" was a Negan ripoff that made it even more obvious that the author had no real plan beyond a surface idea when writing this. Very amateur.
-The happily ever after was hella lame, it didn't feel earned, like in something like The Hunger Games, which I feel is what Mrs Monroe was going for. Because I didn't buy into their relationship one bit, it felt rushed and unsatisfying. At that point I didn't care in all honestly, I only finished it cause it was short.
All in all, I can't recommend this, i'm sure there are much better books in this vein out there, if you want my advice, go read some Ann Aguirre or Marie Lu instead.
