Harry Potter and the Temporal Beacon

Rate this book
Fandom: Harry Potter
Relationship: Hermione Granger/Harry Potter
--------------------------------------------------
At the end of 3rd year, Hermione asks Harry for some help with starting an interesting project. If a dark lord's got a 50-year head start on you, maybe what you need is a little more time to even the playing field. AU, Timetravel, HHr, mild Ron bashing. Minimizing new powers, just making good use of existing ones.

This is one of the better Harry Potter Fanfiction stories, it is a shame it is unfinished.
The story is decidedly Harry/Hermione, and time travel centric.
If you are some deranged lunatic that thinks Hermione is a controlling sociopath you require mental help. and definitely should reread the source material, all the initial books and this fanfiction.

The pairing and romance between the two is alright. their personalities are written well and they make a good couple. However the initial romance sections are not done very well, simultaneously lacking in both substance and having far too much over the top cheese. the writer gets much better at it once they are already in a relationship or perhaps just with more experience writing it; the actual romance shines through far better and the over the top cheese gets reduced.

As for the time travel and overall plot it's remarkably well done. the characters slowly gain in power, make plans that have a tendency to backfire in unpredictable ways and also subtly shows a bit of both the butterfly effect and the inherent chaos of the universe a la quantum mechanics.
the only real criticism I would lever is their ill defined usage of the time travel. at points it has them going back separately at different times during the same timeline without adaquately explaning how that is possible, or what is preventing others from that timeline from doing the same thing once they are gone. And why they wouldn't take some of their allies with them if they could.

It also introduces new adversaries in the unspeakables department that I believe were a mistake. by the last few chapers of this unfinished work it is heavily implied that at least one unspeakable has managed to follow them back. And at this point I believe the author wrote himself into a corner. An adversary at your level that can travel back with you means you are screwed.

Despite the minor hiccups I would definitely suggest this. At least if you like the Harry/Hermione pairing and prefer smart characters that use their strengths well and grow in power.
and if you like this story I would suggest Patron by Starfox5; another Harry/Hermione fanfiction

A Harry and Hermione centred fic with unnecessary romance, though surprising little Ron-bashing. The initial time travel idea was unique and something I hadn't seen done before. Instead of getting to have a do-over, they have vague recollections of the past events like waking up from a dream, though the magic they had learned in previous lives was retained. Then the duo actually managed to figure out proper time-travel where if they die they are sent back with all their memories intact and the fic went downhill from there, not to mention that the romance also got out of hand at that point. The best parts were about the Triwizard Tournaments where the tasks were well thought out and felt like Wizard Olympics. It's almost worth reading for just those parts.

Idiot insecure protagonist does stuff with a girl he's in an unhealthy relationship with. Only meek or reckless protagonist does what he's told or risks his life for any minor reason. Overall tedious plot with a superficial writing style. Of 29 chapters (150k+ words), nothing plot relevant has happened since chapter 2. To the contrary, plot progress has been erased (by muddling the memories of the brainless puppet protagonist and his part-time puppeteer girlfriend).
