This book kept me up way past my bedtime. Phoebe's sense of humor is infectious -- I dare you not to laugh. Who is Phoebe? She's a woman determined to live her life, on her terms, according to her rules. She quit her high-powered corporate job and decides to move to a small town, to live a stress-free simple life. She now makes her living selling her hand-made jewelry.

One night while listening to late night, talk radio she hears a caller that is struggling to reintegrate himself back into civilian life. His favorite song is Down by Mat Kearney because it's soothing to his soul. Phoebe is motivated and touched by the plight of the caller and the words of the song as they speak to her as never before. She decides that she is going to help change someone's life. That someone turns out to be her very reclusive neighbor -- someone that is rarely seen and never heard.

Phoebe is determined to meet this reclusive and mysterious neighbor, so late one night she engineers an accidental meeting by the garbage dumpster. She tries to engage him in conversation but she might as well have been talking to a brick wall. Therefore, she makes it her mission in life to get to know him. Hilarity ensues as her methods are not conventional.

He's essentially a determined hermit and she's equally determined to bring him out of his shell. Take the journey as Phoebe rubs Zou (not his real name) the wrong way and many weeks later the "right" way. Do best friends, make the best lovers? Sometimes they do.

I have read many of this author books and enjoyed them all. I enjoy the fact that she deals with real life issues in her stories.

Definitely worth a read.

Well, I must say that this book started off with an extremely annoying and immature-acting black woman, Phoebe, who has left a Fortune 500 Exec. job to relocate. She decides that she will make a living doing something she enjoys and is less stressful--jewelry making. She was a silly, laughing hyena throughout the book, which drove me crazy. Further, how does a woman justify barging into the apartment of a neighbor she knows nothing about and has never had any meaningful interaction with? Well, Ms. Phoebe did it and thought nothing of it. She also took over the hero's kitchen, checked out the contents of his refrigerator, fixed breakfast, etc. Her behavior went on ad nauseam. This aspect of the story could have been written more realistically because the plot line was untenable.

Goliath (the hero's real name 🙄) has left the army where he was stationed in Afghanistan for several tours. When he came back, he felt no (emotions) and seemed to have lost himself-he felt like the walking dead. Once Phoebe had insinuated herself in his life, her upbeat spirit and her crazy laugh grew on him, and he began to feel some of the darkness in him dissipating. He suffered from severe depression among other serious mental conditions as a result of his tours of duty, and he was not getting any therapeutic help or medication. I feel that this element was really glossed over, and I think that Phoebe should have tried to talk to him about his life or what was bothering him. Phoebe doesn't become aware that Goliath was even an army vet. We don't hear of the horrors he experienced in Afghanistan until near the end of the book when they decided to learn more about each other. IMHO, this should have occurred at the beginning of their acquaintance.

Nonetheless, once the story developed beyond Phoebe's silliness, it was pretty interesting. I actually enjoyed them as a couple, and I would love to see them make an appearance in future books of the Legion of Guardians series. I intend to read that series as well. I've read quite a few of this author's books, some really good, some not so good.

My low rating reflects the many editing problems in this book, principally the author's use of the wrong homophones and run-on sentences.

Cute

I liked the story, it was cute. I didn't understand what in the world she was laughing at so much. It was annoying at first, but the I started laughing because she was always laughing at nothing. It was silly. Lol Give the book a try, you may like it also.

This is my review and how I see it. Another good read. In Extraction, by author Xyla Turner, is a story of discovery for veteran Goliath who had shut himself off from the world and family. He moved to the town of Lily, PA and meets Phoebe who stormed into his life like a whirlwind. Phoebe moved to Lily after leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the big city life. She became intrigued with the new neighbor, so much so that she held a stakeout to meet him and using the 'I am just taking out my trash too' line.

One thing leads to another that Phoebe integrated herself into Goliath's life, whether he want her there or not. At one point it became where he could not function without her. She became is life-line. A light inside is a world of darkness until one day it all blew up.

I wish there were more to their story. I liked the way Phoebe looked at life. Life is about more than work and you have to live it, otherwise, it will just pass you by and then you find yourself wonder where all the time went.

At one point in this book, I could relate to Phoebe."...I’ve tried to give you what you needed when you needed because you’d never talk to me. You wouldn’t confide in me about the turmoil that marred you so bad emotionally. I didn’t ask. I could guess, but I figured, one day you’d come around. I’ve wanted you to meet my dad since my life revolves around you, he’d have to know you existed. But I was afraid because you didn’t even know where you wanted us to be, so I just forgot the conversation about parents. Right? These are just a few of the concessions I made for you. I’m not trying to throw them in your face, but I do want you to know some of the things I haven’t voiced until now. So when you look me in my face and say, we’re not there yet. We’re not to the meeting of the parents because you don’t know about me or us, that cuts deeper than any Samurai sword. It cuts to the bone. You won’t, wait, can’t be without me, but we’re not there ..."(excerpt Phoebe talking to Goliath)

To some Phoebe may seem childish, but that was not the case here. She just learned to let go.

This book has a happy ending. This book is for anyone who loves reading stories about letting go and not taking life so seriously.

This is my review and how I see it.

I liked Goliath and Phoebe's story. Phoebe seemed to be a little much at first, but this was due to what happened in her life and her resolve to live and love the life she's living. She created her own happy place and refused to let anyone mess that up. Goliath needed Phoebe, though he didn't know it. I liked the old neighbor that seemed very wise, but allowed them to see things for themselves. I liked the connections that were made at the beginning and towards the end with the radio show. I also liked seeing the characters from the bike club again. I really had no idea this story was connected until he stepped in the bar. LOL. I liked seeing those characters from someone else's perspective. I also like the thoughtful questions that help promote reflection and discussion. Thanks for adding those!! Great story.

Good Story teller

I have read March and Extraction by Ms.Turner. She tells a good story with humor, sassy and strong women and alpha males who love their women. In the story March she had a great line about the week Might-Morphing along. Power Rangers have been playing in my house for about 15 years so I cracked up. The funny line in this one to me was when the alpha male was reading one of Xyla Turner's books on his Kindle.

This was a good romance with a very serious undertone - a soldier dealing with depression and trying to fit back into society and a female character burnt out from corporate life. I like that the female character choose to be happy on her own terms and healed others on her journey.

Seriously a good read

Phoebe and Goliath's story added to the mystic of the guardians biking group. At times Phoebe talked so much I was even annoyed. Goliath's grumpy persona was a little soft. But I liked him just the same. A nice story indeed. The story touched on just some if the things veterans go through after the war. No sugar coating or skating over the real issues. The love story was underneath all the talking..

I felt this on a level because I'm a war veteran. It's very hard to transition. It's weird how Phoebe bombarded his life and he really didn't push her away that much in the beginning like he could've. He waited a long time to go off on her pushy happy ways and she should be glad she got that far with a strange reclusive man. Also you a mess for throwing in dibs about yourself and your other books in the story that was funny stuff.

The book is about love being reborn for a veteran with the help of Phoebe,a former fortune 500 woman who gave it all up to move to a small town and make jewelry. The funniest part of this poignant love story is that the former soldier's given name is Goliath Minnows. It is definitely correct in its portrayal of the aftermath of war for the returning soldiers and their difficulty trying to fit back into real life.

Phoebe was loon, but I loved her. Her silly antics and uncontrollable laughter were bizarre, yet I really liked her character.

Goliath was clinically depressed and refusing to seek treatment. His mental state clashed with Phoebe bubbly personality at fist, but then she became his light in the darkness.

His scars were obvious while hers were hidden. Their friendship turned relationship was the healing they both needed. 4.5 Stars.

Great storyline but lacked detail

I enter build up between Goliath and Pheobe but I had no idea of Pheobe ethnicity which irked me. Also at one point Goliath’s hair was dark then blond then dark again then it was all over. I would have preferred more content rather than filling it with inserts from other storylines

Goliath

I enjoyed this book. Phoebe was hilarious. I don't know how Goliath didn't strangle her when they first met. They were both damaged people who actually needed each other. Great quick read.

I loved this book! Phoebe was so bubbly and fun. She was a breath of fresh air. Goliath, once past his exterior, really loved deeply. I like these two and this book. Really good!

Extraction

At first I thought Pheobe was bat shot crazy. But after hearing her story and the rationale to never be at that place in her life again I understand. Depression is no joke and people handle it differently. Zhou sought help and that's what counts.

I enjoyed Phoebe and Goliath's love story. I tell that Phoebe was something else. She pretty much forced her way into Goliath's life much to his chagrin in the beginning. She eventually grew on him and they had unbreakable bond. There story was a sweet and at times comical one. I am not a stranger to Xyla Turner's books. I have been reading them for a couple of years now and I enjoy them. This one was another winner. Good job, Xyla Turner!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Goliath and Phoebe drifted seamlessly into a love affair that became a love story, with a child and soon to be marriage for the happily ever after!

I loved this story

I had not thought of how Black Lives Matters from the majority's perspective. I was educated on how whites may think on that subject. Kat had to dig deep to over come her prejudice of policemen. She learned through Vics patience that he was an individual man and she should not lump all policemen in one bad group just like she would not appreciate all Blacks being painted with one broad negative brush. Her ever developing love for Vic helped her to see that and open her heart to Vic. Her brother's accepting and evolving in his own thinking and accepting Vic was a contributing factor as well.
