The inspirational journey of american hero Rocky Bleier is narrated by Rocky himself. It is one of the greatest comebacks in sports history told by a man who, seriously wounded in Vietnam, was described by the U.S. Army as 40 percent disabled. True story of inspiration and fortitude to overcome obstacles. He and I were drafted into the Army during the same period of time and he expressed the mixed emotions I also felt.

Written in 1975 with a new preface and additional information in the end this was a great read to remember a Steeler that had a tremendous impact on those first 4 Super Bowl wins.

What I found most impressive was his willing to be honest open about his life, the challenges, the blessings and the unexpected parts of his life.

A college football player that probably didn't have the tools to become a great pro but was drafted by the Steelers. Then drafted into the Army, served in Vietnam and was wounded. Many told him he would never play pro ball again. He was determined to give it his best shot and worked and not only made the team but was a better player than before Vietnam. Not because of his injury but his work to overcome his limitation made him stronger physically and mentally.

It is a story of someone that shows his successes and his failure both on and off the field.

It is also a look into the transformation of the Steelers in those years of perennial losers to world champions.

Life is full of challenges, adversities and opportunities. What we do with them makes the difference as is clearly shown here.

Well worth the read!

An almost unbelievable effort to regain the physical, emotional and person level of success as an athlete after a devastating physical injury suffered during the Vietnam War.

I read this book while in late junior high school or high school while engrossed in playing football.

My attention and knowledge at that time was all about his personal path back fighting against despair, depression, slow progress, possible loss of a successful, admirable career, etc.

I also followed and admired the Pittsburgh Steelers, for whom Rocky Blier played, with so many all-time great players, so much diversity and personalities but above all else perhaps - excellence.

A special edition of the originally published book of an American Hero who answered the call to fight for his country when called upon, overcome injuries suffered during that fight, and become an integral part of one of the best dynasties in the NFL. A true joy and inspirational read for every Steeler fan!
