Il mondo della splendida Susan viene però repentinamente messo sottosopra quando il suo amato Barry viene trovato morto in un appartamento segreto, o meglio, in una casa del sesso. La donna viene così tristemente a conoscenza della doppia vita del marito e si ritrova anche senza casa visto che l’uomo era pieno di debiti e la banca decide di toglierle tutto. Le due amiche però escogitano un piano e dopo aver conosciuto un vecchio gangster pronto ad aiutarle decidono di gabbare loro la banca. Ma sarà davvero così facile come pensano? Ad aiutarle un gruppo di vecchie e pazze amiche pronte a tutto, anche alla fuga, pur di fuggire dalla loro noiosa vita. Le solite sospette di John Niven è un romanzo sull’amicizia, in tarda età, sulle donne della middle class inglese raccontate da uno dei più divertenti autori britannici.

About the author

Born in Irvine, Ayrshire, Niven read English Literature at Glasgow University, graduating in 1991 with First Class honours. For the next ten years, he worked for a variety of record companies, including London Records and Independiente. He left the music industry to write full time in 2002 and published his debut novella Music from Big Pink in 2005 (Continuum Press). The novella was optioned for the screen by CC Films with a script has been written by English playwright Jez Butterworth. Niven's breakthrough novel Kill Your Friends is a satire of the music business, based on his brief career in A&R, during which he passed up the chance to sign Coldplay and Muse. The novel was published by William Heinemann in 2008 and achieved much acclaim, with Word magazine describing it as "possibly the best British Novel since Trainspotting". It has been translated into seven languages and was a bestseller in Britain and Germany. Niven has since published The Amateurs (2009), The Second Coming (2011), Cold Hands (2012) and Straight White Male (2013).

He also writes original screenplays with writing partner Nick Ball, the younger brother of British TV presenter Zoë Ball. His journalistic contributions to newspapers and magazines include a monthly column for Q magazine, entitled "London Kills Me". In 2009 Niven wrote a controversial article for The Independent newspaper where he attacked the media's largely complacent coverage of Michael Jackson's death.

Niven lives in Buckinghamshire with his fiancee and infant daughter. He has a teenage son from a previous marriage.

I am at the point in my life where I sometimes start to not finish books, even though it totally bugs me to do to so. But when I've read over 100 pages and actively dislike it and don't see it getting any better, what's the point?

I have read and enjoyed most of John Niven's books to different degrees, but this here is just a bad book. It's not funny, it's not engaging. It's silly in a bad way, superficial, going for shock factor but in a boring mild way.

I think I might have to go back and read "The Second Coming" to see if it's me who's changed and not just John Niven becoming a super lazy author and/or forgetting how to write.

Avevo tanto sentito parlare di questo libro e sempre molto bene, della serie che si rideva dalla prima all’ultima pagina, per cui non vedevo l’ora di leggerlo.
Per cui potete immaginare il mio sconforto quando ho iniziato il libro e proprio non riuscivo ad andare avanti…
La prima parte del romanzo, infatti, l’ho digerita proprio male, mentre devo dire che ho davvero divorato la seconda, quella da dopo il furto, che mi ha fatto proprio scompisciare dalle risate!
E questo grazie a due personaggi: Ethel, la volgarissima nonnetta in carrozzina, e soprattutto l’ispettore Boscombe, una versione inglese e ancora più disgraziata dell’ispettore Clusoe de La Pantera Rosa. Le sue scene mi hanno davvero steso: lui, infatti, si ritrova sempre nel posto giusto al momento giusto per pura casualità, ma ogni volta viene sopraffatto dagli eventi e si ritrova anche a rischiare di rimetterci la pelle.

Nel complesso un libro che ci mette un po’, anzi, un bel po’, a partire, ma quando lo fa è in grado di farti avere difficoltà a leggere perché risulta tutto sfocato a causa delle lacrime agli occhi dovute alle troppe risate!

Sicuramente leggerò altro di questo autore.

Un libro che ho adorato! Divertentissimo, originale, molto scorrevole e, soprattutto, molto coinvolgente.
Di solito non leggo molto velocemente e non leggo moltissime pagine senza pause ma, con questo libro, ho "macinato" 350 pagine in pochissimo tempo rispetto ai miei standard. Inoltre, la narrazione mi ha preso a tal punto da farmi perdere la cognizione del tempo, cosa che mi accade raramente.
Mi sono trovato a gioire, sospirare, ridere e rattristarmi insieme alle quattro "vecchiette" e lo svolgimento delle loro avventure e disavventure mi ha preso talmente tanto da non riuscire quasi a interrompere la lettura e mettere giù il libro per una pausa.
Assolutamente consigliato a tutti quelli che cercano una lettura divertente e leggera ma non banale e con (ALLERTA SEMI-SPOILER!!!) un bel lieto fine per (quasi) tutti i personaggi.

Many moons ago I read Kill Your Friends and loved it. In 2015, I caught up with most of the other books John Niven has written, and almost all are very enjoyable. Consequently I was keen to read The Sunshine Cruise Company and had reasonably high expectations.

The Sunshine Cruise Company is an easy read that should keep you entertained and amused from the first page to the last. It also contains one of the most memorable fictional deaths I have ever encountered. John Niven almost always guarantees new and surprising set ups - and so it is with The Sunshine Cruise Company. Another welcome and unusual feature is that all the lead characters are smart, credible women, many of whom are facing old age.

As with other books by John Niven, if you dislike profanity and violence this is best avoided, if not, you’re in for a treat. Additionally if you prefer plausible plots and a degree of seriousness, again, look elsewhere. Conversely, if you are happy to go along with unlikely bank robbers, hapless cops, women behaving badly, a fast-moving plot, plenty of swearing, and a lot of lewd, broad, knockabout humour, then you should find much to enjoy here.

Quest'anno letterario è iniziato male: due letture, due delusioni. Ma, mentre La bussola d'oro di cui avevo sempre sentito parlare benissimo è stata una vera e propria delusione, in questo caso non è che mi aspettassi un capolavoro, cercavo solo un libro leggero e divertente da leggere in un periodo impegnativo e stressante. Di Niven avevo già letto A volte ritorno che mi era piaciuto e che purtroppo e per fortuna è distante anni luce dalle solite sospette.
Quest'ultimo l'ho trovato un libro poco ispirato e privo di originalità. Soprattutto, pur essendo un libro umoristico, non fa ridere. Si lascia leggere ma questo, dal mio punto di vista, non basta assolutamente per prendersi una sufficienza, soprattutto considerato che a La banda degli invisibili, un libro simile ma di gran lunga migliore, avevo dato tre stelle.
Niven, Niven, va bene scrivere per soldi ma... wow... non è che questo libro l'hai scritto per ripagarti un debito, in tre giorni e con una pistola puntata alla testa?

Esilarante, una coccola che arriva attraverso un sorriso lungo un intero romanzo.
Credo di non aver mai riso così tanto leggendo un romanzo, John Niven ci porta nella commedia letteraria perfetta, quella in cui quattro donne ormai anziane decidono, per motivi diversi, di rapinare una banca e tentare la fuga con il bottino.
Sulle loro tracce una coppia di poliziotti che ricorda le comiche di “scuola di polizia”, e un tour europeo per cercare di farla franca.

La scrittura di John Niven è irriverente, veloce e spassosa così come improbabili ma adorabili sono le protagoniste.
Questo romanzo è un mix di elementi presi dalle commedie, un concentrato di cinematografia e caratterizzazioni che rendono tutto geniale e godibile dalla prima all’ultima pagina!
“Le solite sospette” è il libro perfetto per i momenti imperfetti: può essere una medicina in un momento no, può essere la cura al blocco del lettore, può essere la pausa tra un libro “impegnato” e un altro, è il consiglio perfetto per chi vorrebbe leggere qualcosa ma non sa cosa…

Farti ridere fino a sfinirti non è poi facile facile. Specie se gli ingredienti sono quattro vecchiette, pardon quattro splendide sessantenni (di cui una soltanto ne dimostra ottanta, come tutte le sessantenni del mondo, e per di più piazzata in sedia a rotelle per raggiunti limiti di peso: Kathy Bates. Le altre Sigourney Weaver, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep hanno ancora dei “culi” da quarantenni ) protagoniste di un triller inverosimile, al confine tra Jerome K. Jerome e una favoletta nera dove un buono lo puoi trovare solo se raschi il barile del tempo. Della serie: le circostanze della vita hanno mandato al diavolo una materia prima linda dentro e bella fuori.

Certo se Niven non l’ avesse tirata a lungo con per cento pagine superflue… . Però mi sarei persa le esilaranti performance scatologiche dello scalcagnato, obeso, ottuso e incazzoso sergente detective Boscombe, senza il quale l’ avventura delle quattro “vecchiette” si sarebbe fermata subito dopo la scoperta della indicibile causa di morte dell’attempato marito di una di loro. A dire il vero non sarebbe nemmeno iniziata.

Senza stelle: non che mi vergogni di essermi divertita ma non voglio responsabilità. Vai a sapere se si possa ridere sia per Auto da fè che per Le solite sospette. Come è successo a me. Che non abbia capito Canetti?

Tame. Tame as in Fredrik Backman (A Man Called Ove) and Rachel Joyce (The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry) got together over coffee and knäckebrod to write a sweet, feel-good road movie novel featuring some lively 60+ ladies...but then realised it need a bit more kick, so they called up John Niven, who threw in some over-the-top sex comedy and foul language before going out to play golf.

And...voilà! The Sunshine Cruise Company! (dt: Old School)

Except, no. Really no. I had to DNF at 60% because this isn't what I hop on "The Good Ship Niven" for. This is light years from the absurd nastiness of "Kill Your Friends" even if this one can boast a clear plot and far more likeable characters. I also didn't sign up for a romp through France. I signed up for the UK and now I feel a little swindled on that front, too. (No mention of France in the German blurb)

So with due warning about the petting zoo out of the way...the novel is deffo readable. The characters are well-drawn, the writing is good and it's not totally predictable even for a road movie style story.

So, if you like the sweet, feel-good stuff and aren't adverse to some (okay a lot) of swearing and sex jokes from old ladies in wheelchairs, then you might love it.

This book was written by John Niven, a Scottish writer who became famous for his incredible ability to mix serious storytelling and bad language.
"The sunshine cruise company" tells of a group of elderly women, say between 60 and 90 years old, who do not give up on inactivity and decide to rob a bank. The brilliant idea comes to Susan, the youngest (or less oldest) of the group, who, due to the death of her husband from a heart attack, suddenly is on the verge of economic ruin. This bad turn in Susan's tranquil life occurs when her husband is found dead in a basement used as a place for fetish erotic games; obviously she knew nothing about it (her husband Barry was a quiet accountant ...) and she will find out that Barry had a double life. His death leaves Susan in debt and now the bank is about to take away her house.
The other ladies of the group are Julie, a bit under the age of seventy, for whom life has not been easy between failures and bad relationships, and who now lives alone in a rented flat and cleans in a retirement home ; Jill, a slightly rigid and perfect woman, who hates vulgarities and bad words, with a seriously ill grandchild and who does not have the money to pay for the operation that could save him; and then there is Ethel, the oldest, the most hilarious, the most libidinous and the most open-minded of the group, with a past that is perceived to be lived very intensely and that still today has no desire to die in a nursing home. Just know that she goes around with a motorized wheelchair on the back of which there is a sticker that says "no brakes"….
The other two protagonists of the plot are Inspector Boscombe, impetuous, insensitive, clumsy and his subordinate, Agent Wesley, who tries to repair the wrongdoings of his boss.
The book soon develops into a daring hunt for fugitives, between England and France and during which we will also meet other strange and funny characters. Why do friends turn into fugitives? Because wanting to financially help Susan, they decide to study a plan to rob the bank that wants to take Susan's house away. One day while Susan was arguing with the bank manager she had noticed that the proceeds of a supermarket were brought to the bank same time same day every week; one night, half drunk, Susan and Julie start talking about the past and Julie tells of when, traveling around the world between Australia and America, she met a guy who looked like an actor and who had a strange nickname, Stigmata, specialized, coincidentally, in bank robberies. The idea begins to make its way into Susan's mind, but she is a correct person and some scruples come to her, but now the process has started and the idea of a robbery with the support of a ninety-year-old ex convict with an oxygen cylinder on the back, who alternates mouthfuls of oxygen with ferocious cigar strokes, will become increasingly evident. Stigmata still has an old arsenal of weapons and various gadgets including strange black balaclavas suitable for the purpose.
And then, who would think that a group of sixty-year-olds and a ninety-year-old woman in a wheelchair hidden behind balaclavas in worker's clothes could really do a robbery? Everyone will think of a joke, especially seeing Ethel in her wheelchair, but they will immediately change their face when the old woman pulls out from under a plaid nothing less than a sawn-off shotgun.
Previously, Inspector Boscombe, determined but a little stupid, had had to deal with Susan a couple of times: the first when he had given her the news of Barry's discovery and the second when he had brought back Barry's personal effects , just when Susan and her friends were discussing the details of the robbery.
On the day of the robbery Boscombe is eating an ice cream near the Bank and when he sees the thieves load a woman in a wheelchair into the van to escape, he remembers having already seen her at Susan's house. This is where the adventurous pursuit between England and the French Riviera begins, full of unlikely episodes and hilarious misunderstandings, until the final epilogue.
It is a very funny novel, with all the features of Niven: a good dose of vulgarity, which associated with these elderly protagonists produces a truly exhilarating effect; an exaggerated story, bordering on the absurd; a stupid but possible policeman. But also important issues: personal bankruptcy, the desire to take back your life, never to give up, the illness, the lack of money. It is certainly also a book on friendship, and its importance when you are old. A fun, engaging story, suitable for anyone who wants to spend a few hours without heavy thoughts. To laugh, but also to think.

Avevo letto poco prima di questo, A volte ritorno di John Niven, che, contrariamente alla maggior parte, mi aveva fatto ridere poco stimolandomi più riflessioni profonde, nonostante mi sia piaciuto molto.
Questo invece mi ha fatto morire.

Nella prima parte iniziamo a conoscere le vecchiette protagoniste di questo libro (che poi vecchiette insomma, dalla descrizione darei massimo 70 anni!): Susan è l’unica a cui sembra che le cose vadano bene, sposata ad un commercialista che non le fa mancare nulla, e con un figlio grande sposato da cui spera di avere presto dei nipotini, una bella casa, e l’hobby del teatro. Lì vede anche l’amica Jill, che ha un nipotino molto malato che dovrebbe subire un intervento molto delicato per avere speranze di sopravvivenza, ma che è troppo costoso per le loro tasche.
Julie, sua migliore amica dall’infanzia, dopo anni di vita un po’ sopra le righe e diversi tentativi andati male, non se la passa molto bene, finita a fare le pulizie in un ospizio, dove conosce Ethel, una ottantenne in carrozzella, con pochi limiti e nessun pudore.
Presto arriva un evento totalmente inaspettato a devastare la vita perfetta di Susan e far crollare il suo castello di certezze, che la porterà, dopo diversi scontri con la banca in cui avevano aperto il conto, a progettare una rapina in cui coinvolgerà le sue amiche, sotto la guida di Stimmate, vecchio amico della scuola.

Ethel mi è sembrata un po’ “troppo” col suo linguaggio ed i suoi vizi, e Jill all’opposto un po’ troppo controllata e perbenista.
Susan e Julie invece mi sono piaciute tanto entrambe anche se molto diverse l’una dall’altra, le ho trovate esattamente complementari e mi è piaciuta tanto in particolare la loro forza e la voglia di rimettersi in gioco e non arrendersi, nonostante le sorti avverse, invece di compatirsi e piagnucolare.
E ne passano veramente tante!!!
E anche Vanessa è deliziosa, ragazzina che, seppur così giovane, riesce a stabilire un legame autentico con le signore, in particolare con Julie, il rapporto con cui risulta davvero commovente.
Il personaggio che però risulta più divertente di tutti è il detective Boscombe che nella coppia con Weasley crea delle scene davvero esilaranti.
La migliore è quella dell’entrata trionfale nella concessionaria, anche se quella di Stimmate e della vetrina del supermercato non scherza per niente.

La conclusione è un po’ scontata e il modo in cui si svolgono le vicende alquanto surreale e a tratti grottesco, ma ovviamente è puntato più sul caricaturale e sull’emergere dei vari personaggi, anche se non sono mancati dei momenti più toccanti.
Il culmine si ha dopo il colpo di scena con Tamalov e l’eploit nella genialata di Susan che mostra come più dei muscoli conti il cervello!!!

"The Sunshine Cruise Company" was an easy and enjoyable read. I hadn't read the blurb, so I was completely taken by surprise.

The main characters are four women: Susan Frobisher, middle class sixty year-old, stay at home wife; her best friend, Julie, who's lead an adventurous life, but who now barely scrapes by, working as an aide in a nursing home where she meets another one of the protagonists, Ethel, overweight, wheel-chair bound eighty-something year old lady. Another one of the characters is Jill, a Christian woman, who's very worried about her grandson who suffers from a debilitating life-threatening condition.

When Susan's husband dies unexpectedly, she's left with a multitude of debts and is about to lose her home.

So Susan and Julie decide that they've got nothing to lose, so they might as well rob the local bank.
They meet an old friend of Julie's who had robbed banks. Then they co-opt Jill and Ethel to help with the job.

As you can imagine, things don't go quite so smoothly.

This novel reads like a movie script. It's packed with action and situational humour. The characters are all different and compliment each other very well. I personally thought it was very refreshing and wonderful to read about women who are past their prime and who are so bold and adventurous. There's nothing like desperation to push people to do things out of character.

The humour is mostly provided by a very stupid, yet very determined, sergeant, who gets himself into all sort of troubles - think Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther and The Genderme' seies with Louis de Funes - but in this case, the policeman is British.

So in conclusion, this was a very enjoyable, competently written novel - perfectly suited for being made into a movie. Think "The Italian Job" with a splash of "The Pink Panther", but better, as the main characters are women in their sixties, with nothing to lose.

Mah. Niente di che.
L'ho trovato eccessivo nel linguaggio, nella trama, nei personaggi; la sensazione è stata che l'autore volesse essere forzatamente divertente finendo per creare un'atmosfera per niente piacevole e ilare, solo situazioni grottesche e già viste. Una comicità da film francese scadente(non me ne vogliano gli appassionati del genere).
Non è noioso, forse prevedibile,magari qualche passaggio vi farà anche sorridere, perché no?! Ma a mio avviso si vive bene anche senza.
La copertina è più bella del libro in sé.

Als Hörbuch fand ich das ziemlich unterhaltsam… eher 3,5 als 2,5🌟
Ich muss aber sagen, ich hab fast alle John Niven gehört und so richtig supertoll fand ich keines, was vor allem an der sprachlichen Einfachheit liegt, aber fast alle spannend und unterhaltsam.

This novel is about two women who have been friends since school and are now both turning sixty. The women are slightly different as Susan seems to have it all, a gorgeous house, a long, steady and loving marriage to an accountant called Barry. But Julie, on the other hand has not being dealt such a fortunate hand, she has put her bad past of failed relationships and also failed businesses behind her and is now glad to have found some stability in her life when she moves into a council flat and starts working at an old people's home.
However everything gets flipped onto its head when Susan's husband Barry is found dead in what first appears to be a secret flat but is actually a sex dungeon. Barry's secret second life all comes spilling out as we learn that the led a double life as a swinger and ran up a fortune in debts that the bank is now going to take from Susan.
The book shows a satirical view on friendship, ageing and the housing bubble. The characters in this novel are described so well by the author that it feels like they are actually real people. Everything thing that he writes about in the novel feels like it could happen, this adds a great depth to the novel as it makes it much easier to get along with and to be able to visualise the journey the two women are going on. The characters are so easy to love, you get a real sense of what the author is wanting them to be like, they are two women who are helped along the journey with the help of a gangster called Nails and a wheelchair bound lady called Ethel. The author adds a great touch of humour and wit to the novel. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I will certainly be reading more by him!

Un romanzo scatenato e divertente, con molto slapstick e nessun calo di ritmo, nonostante, tolti gli eventi iniziali e la rapina, tutto il resto della narrazione verta sulla fuga delle protagoniste.
Poi ovvio che non è un capolavoro imprescindibile, la storia è assurda e personalmente ho avuto qualche problema a "inquadrare" le vecchiette, perché di fatto non sono così vecchie (a parte Ethel, che però ha l'animo e gli appetiti di una ventenne): sono sulla sessantina e ancora parecchio in forma, tanto che con un po' di trucco all'occorrenza riescono a togliersi una quindicina d'anni; questo fa sì che la storia possa permettersi parecchi momenti d'azione, ma si sgonfia un po' la promessa iniziale di un colpo incredibile compiuto da una banda di arzille nonnine.
Comunque si fa leggere e in più di un'occasione mi ha fatto ridere a voce alta.

Allora, io sono dell'idea che i libri vadano valutati a seconda della scopo che si prefiggono. Questo non è Tolstoj, non è nemmeno un capolavoro di humor inglese, ma direi che ha svolto egregiamente il suo lavoro.
Mi ha strappato qualche risata, mi ha fatto preoccupare per le vecchiette (che poi a 59-60 anni si è vecchi adesso?), mi ha fatto simpatizzare con lo sfigatissimo Boscombe.

È vero, i personaggi sono un po' macchiette, la trama è piuttosto prevedibile, ma non mi aspettavo di più.

Un'unica riflessione: com'è che la letteratura con protagonisti anziani è fatta solo di bande di ottuagenari che rapinano banche o di ometti con storie strappalacrime?

Now this isn’t the sort of novel I read too much of, so in one sense it was good to get into something a little silly and different. This story is obviously totally ridiculous, but it is also fun and had me guffawing aloud a few times.

Though having two elderly women around the same age named Jill and Julie was not helpful, but this is a story that moves incredibly quickly and soon embraces many aspects of the absurd to the point that they almost become charming. So this is definitely not for everyone, but if you like goofy, light-hearted feel good stories then I suppose you could do better than this, but you could also do worse.

DIVERTENTISSIMO. John Niven è un asso, si vede che lavora in televisione. L'ho trovato migliore anche di A VOLTE RITORNO, il suo primo romanzo se non sbaglio. Certo, il libro è infarcito di cliché che manco uno sfiliatino, però hai davvero piacere nel leggerlo. È proprio la lettura che ci vuole se si vuole superare il blocco del lettore o si vuole prendere respiro da un pacco polacco o da un libro supercazzola. Consigliato.

If Tom Sharpe had written The Hundred Year Old Man (etc...) this is what I would imagine it would have been like. This is a laugh out loud funny story of a bank robbery carried out by a selection of elderly Brits, and their time 'on the lamb' in France. Hilarious and touching at the same time. The scenes with Detective Boscombe were particularly wonderful.

C'era una volta il british humour

Prima grossa delusione del 2017: avevo sentito parlare di questo autore come di un maestro dell'umorismo e speravo di incontrare un novello Jerome K. Jerome. Niente di più lontano: Niven non inventa niente e saccheggia senza vergogna dall'immaginario cinematografico, non solo abbondando in "scene d'azione" prese da splastick comedies (e che forse sono le parti meno peggiori del libro), ma anche costruendo personaggi piatti e già visti in tante pellicole di valore non sempre alto. Il poliziotto sembra essere un ispettore Closeau britannico (con annesso capo che impazzisce alle notizie delle sue gesta), le protagoniste costruite sul solito luogo comune delle "brave" donne che si fanno una botta di vita, i criminali russi vengono dai blockbuster hollywoodiani degli ultimi 20 anni. Ma la cosa peggiore è che questo libro è assolutamente sessista, fin dall'idea iniziale che dovrebbe essere "strana" (mo' ve faccio ride: quattro donne che rapinano una banca e la sfangano - da sbellicarsi, eh?!?) proseguendo per i profili dei personaggi fatti con l'accetta fino ad arrivare al top in cui una quindicenne viene vestita in modo ultra-sexy per circuire il criminale in discoteca con il commento finale della anziana "scorretta": "Beh, se va male potremo tirare qualcosa su mandandoti a battere". …..forse se siete persone che ridono con i cinepanettoni di Boldi&DeSica, questo libro vi divertirà, a me ha solo irritato e annoiato….

L'ho letto d'un fiato.

Mi aveva attirata la copertina, quindi ho sbirciato la trama proprio al volissimo, rischiando anche di perdere il treno. L'ho comprato d'istinto, alla fine. E sono felice di averlo fatto.

Mi è piaciuto molto, sia perché è un romanzo leggero, sia perché le protagoniste sono donne solitamente 'messe da parte', ovvero a cui vengono assegnati ruoli secondari. Le vecchiette di cui parla Niven sono attive, specialmente perché le loro vite sono state stravolte da una serie di eventi che spingono le donne all'azione.

Non vi dico altro, tranne... Pollici in alto!

Lo consiglio come lettura prima di andare a dormire o sotto l'ombrellone.

Nothing but praise for a story where each character holds distinctly unique personalities, reflected by real and authentic voices and conversation.

Whilst bosting a most certainly fictional premise, the narrative arc does not succumb to typical plot-holes nor introduce single-use character flaws - an often off-putting feature of fictional reads.

TSCC breathes a captivating narrative of older-age friendships and worries of 'what life may have been', softened by the humour and wit of Nivens writing.

Poteva essere un libro divertentissimo, viste le premesse, ma lo stile super cringe dell'autore ha rovinato un po' l'esperienza. Sarò vecchia, ma usare la volgarità per far ridere non l'ho mai capita.
Il personaggio del detective, poi, caricaturale a livelli altissimi che Ispettore Zenigata spostati proprio.

Divertente, irriverente, schietto, bizzarro e politicamente scorretto...Niven ci porta in un assurdo e roccambolesco viaggio on the road dove tutto è ammesso, e dove l'amicizia vera riesce a superare ogni ostacolo! Divertimento assicurato, consigliatissimo! Ps: Ethel una di noi!
