Wild as it Gets: Wanderings of a Bemused Naturalist

Rate this book
What's your cat up to when you're not around? Do dragons exist? Are clouds alive? Why did three men risk their lives for a single penguin egg? These are just a few of the questions and stories puzzled over by award-winning travel writer and naturalist Don Pinnock in this collection assembled from years of wandering around Africa. A funny, entertaining and thought-provoking book.

I was walking towards the checkout table with my book haul at my local public library when this book caught my eye. I picked it up read the back, and thought "sounds cool", then added it to my pile. I was so happy I did that.

I'm writing this review in August 2020, even though I finished reading the book in May 2019 and that's because I'm still thinking about it. I still randomly find myself thinking about that one paragraph about the elephants in Botswana, a passage of writing that made me wish I had that kind of literary vision. When I'm hiking with friends in the mountains and we encounter a troop of baboons, I'll still recall the anecdotes about animals and what the book tells you to do when you're face-to-face with a charging wild animal.

It was one of the best books I read in 2019 and soon I'll be going back to my local library to check it out again!
