The Shape of Ideas: An Illustrated Exploration of Creativity

Rate this book
What does an idea look like? And where do they come from? Grant Snider’s illustrations will motivate you to explore these questions, inspire you to come up with your own answers and, like all Gordian knots, prompt even more questions. Whether you are a professional artist or designer, a student pursuing a creative career, a person of faith, someone who likes walks on the beach, or a dreamer who sits on the front porch contemplating life, this collection of one- and two-page comics will provide insight into the joys and frustrations of creativity, inspiration, and process—no matter your age or creative background.

Grant Snider began drawing and writing before he knew what he was doing. Soon it was too late to stop.

He is the author of the picture books WHAT COLOR IS NIGHT? and WHAT SOUND IS MORNING? and the creator of Incidental Comics. His comics were collected and published in the books THE SHAPE OF IDEAS and I WILL JUDGE YOU BY YOUR BOOKSHELF. Grant's comics about creativity and the human condition have appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Best American Comics.

Grant lives in Wichita, Kansas with his wife, daughter, and three sons, where he also practices orthodontics. You can often find him carrying a sketchbook, lost in his own thoughts.

I came across Grant Snider's work on Facebook, through his page Incidental Comics . His illustrations mostly deal with the struggles of a creative mind trying to cope with life and rinse out some art.

The book is divided into ten parts full of sequential art.

-> Inspiration
-> Perspiration
-> Improvisation
-> Aspiration
-> Contemplation
-> Exploration
-> Daily Frustration
-> Imitation
-> Desperation
-> Pure Elation

Grant Snider didn't aim to make this book look like an answer to the problems creative minds face everyday. Instead he lets the reader take a glimpse of his own personal creative process to give some insight into the joys and the pitfalls of creativity, hoping that it encourages the readers in their search for ideas.

"Do you sometimes feel guilty for seeking creative ideas at the expense of personal relationships or professional success? Do you dream of one day discovering a bottomless well of creativity, so you will never search in desperation for a new idea? Do you occasionally fantasize about giving up the search for ideas altogether and living a life of blissful noncreativity? Do you fear that one day there might not be another idea?

This book will not help you solve these problems. And that bottomless well of creativity? It doesn't exist.

But do not despair. Every comic in this book was once a blank page. (Perhaps one or two should have stayed that way.) Since T began drawing Incidental Comics way back in 2009, my goal has been to create at least one full-page comic strip per week. I often keep a sketchbook with me to capture stray ideas that float by. Most mornings before work I guzzle coffee, sit at my drawing table, and try to shape these unformed ideas into something worth showing the world."

- Grant Snider in the foreword

Essentially, all we have here is a collection of comic strips depicting the ups and downs of the creative process. It made me recall quite a few nostalgic college days, when I was planning on building 3495830495834 open-source web apps.
No, you may definitely NOT ask how many I've actually built...

The nature of ambition

Uncharacteristically for me, there was very little I've actually disliked in it. Perhaps its lack of originality? But then Sinder warns his readers not to expect earth shattering solutions here (be they inspirational or social). What this book does achieve, is coming up with a whole host of extremely relatable stories. As a person with a very technical job, let me assure you that even the less artistically inclined will find some common ground. Oh, and the clever puns and world-play were definitely appreciated.

vZZ1GS.md.jpg

More interestingly however, I greatly enjoyed the comic strips as a whole, despite not being too impressed by the art style itself. So kudos for making it work.

Score: 4.8/5 stars

All those feels have to go somewhere, so I might as well pour them into the scoring.

This book reminded me of an Academy-award-winning short from the seventies, Why Man Creates:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONVZ8...

Culled from comics created for Snider’s Incidental Comics site, it’s very attractively—shall we say creatively?—designed, sweetly colorful, with plenty of reflections about the nature of creativity, philosophy, therapy, advice. It opens with a letter to The Reader that makes it appear to be intended as a textbook. As a writer, I have not typically found these books all that useful, but hey, maybe it will be for you, and will nudge you in the right direction! The art is the best part of it.

I see Snider has no other books yet, though lots of online comics. This made me think of others who are better at “how to” books than actual story-making. Scott McCloud, Understanding Comcs, comes to mind. Writing The Natural Way by Rico. Georgia Heard's work. I hope Snider finds an outlet for his creativity beyond the topic of creativity (though maybe he already has, I’ll check out more of his work).

The Shape of Ideas: An Illustrated Exploration of Creativity

An excellent and rather whimsical exploration of the creative process. This is a collection of one and two page cartoons dealing with creativity. Not all are funny, but humor isn't really the main point. Most of the laughing I did came from recognition of some insight or truth that Snider encapsulated so perfectly. Anyone who's been even the tiniest bit creative--even just writing a review for Goodreads, for instance--will appreciate this book. Snider has a nice, clean, warm style going for him. In lesser hands, this material would be little better than a series of motivational posters. He manages to come up with just the right illustrations to make his ideas clear, concise, poetic, and with just the right touch of playfulness. Highly recommended!

"Today I will do nothing... but encourage the grass to grow greener, wait for the flowers to unfurl, analyze the ambitions of robins, study the physics of squirrels, read the writing of branches on the sky, as the wind turns my unread pages. I will master the pursuit of aimlessness. Today is a holiday dedicated to boredom." pg 72

I really liked this one. It was poetic, interesting and engaging. Can be pretty relatable and puts things into perspective. This is definitely the kind of book I could read again and again. Kind of gets me into a creative mood, but definitely gets me thinking.

This is a collection of cartoons by Grant Snider, which you can see on his website at Incedental Comics. If you like the sort of humor he exhibits there, then this is definetly a good collection to pick up and have in one place.

I found, however, never having read him before, that it seemed a little much to have it all at once, that yes, I get what you are saying, and what you said three pages ago, and yes you were amusing, but what a long book of cartoons. There were a few that I laughed at, or felt the pain of.

Would recommend this to be people who are fans, or become fans after visiting the site.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley and ABRAMS for providing this ARC in exchange of an honest review

Actual rating: 3.5/5

A truly unique book with lots of great ideas and beautiful illustrations. I have never seen any work of author Grant Snider before. I went to reading this without too much expectations. But it was too good for the first time read of the author.

The books has been divided into 10 different categories: Inspiration, Perspiration, Improvisation, Aspiration, Contemplation, Exploration, Daily frustration, Imitation, Desperation and Pure Elation. Each part has its own set of comics to illustrate ideas. My favourite was The nature of ambition under Aspiration.

Each concept has been depicted very clearly and cleverly. This is really an inspirational book for all the creative people. They can get very much from it. The illustrations are too effective and they got you thinking that even illustrations can be so effective.

It is so beautiful to see words and pictures is perfect harmony; I was so mesmerized by it. The pictures gave life to the words or should I say the words gave life to the pictures; it is a perfect marriage. I really enjoyed it.

Shape of idea
Grant Snider

Make a fresh brew of coffee, put on some jazz-soul-alt rock and jump into this book experience ! Better still, do all this on a Sunday Morning !

You may already be familiar with some of the profound concepts mentioned in this book.
But the book presents them all in a coherent flow of the creative process, with beautiful illustrations!

A graphic novel that looks at creativity from a variety of angles. Some cartoons hit the mark, some stray, but overall it’s enjoyable and would make an excellent gift for the creative types in your life. I’d also suggest it as a graduation present, even for those not planning on going into fields traditionally considered creative. Recommended.

This colorful book captures the inner turmoil of artists very well. The never ending chase for ideas, getting overwhelmed by them and etc. also you don’t need to be an artist in the traditional sense to find a piece of yourself_if not many_ in this wholesome read. Artistry is often hidden beneath the surface of many unexpected fields, waiting to be discovered by those who could handle it.

If you think you don't have ideas , indulge in this book and you will realise where your ideas evaporate into. Minimal illustrative depiction of people who tend to live more inside their heads than out in the world.
