The Barnyard Band is performing today. All the musicians are coming to play! Each animal musician knows what to do, but Cow can only moo! This charming book is a wonderful read-aloud featuring musical sounds and a refrain children will love repeating. Tim McCanna’s playful text will have children laughing at the funny musical sounds, and Allison Black’s energetic illustrations will make children want to get up and move. Barnyard Boogie! is full of rhyming and nonsense sounds that will enrich and delight.
Loved the bright colorful illustrations of the barnyard animals. Full of onomatopoeia, this will be a fun read aloud that invites audience participation.
First sentence: The Barnyard Band is performing today. All the musicians are ready to play! Horse brings the tuba. Oompa Doompa Doo! Goat swings the sax. Honka wonka woo! But what can Cow do? Moo?
Premise/plot: Little ones meet the Barnyard Band in Tim McCanna's bright and bouncy picture book. The animals on the farm all have something to do in the band. But what will Cow do? How does he fit in the act?
My thoughts: I liked it. As long as there are picture books being published, there will be a new crop of farm books each year. There have been other animals-form-a-band books before, this one will fit right in.

Fun book for young fans of farm animals and music. This is a quick, rhyming read that's perfect for toddlers and up. The colorful illustrations are great too.
Reading this book to littles is a fantastic way to build early and pe-literacy skills. It's especially great for toddlers who are learning to talk and can identity different aninal/sounds. My class loved interacting with it, everyone answering with a "Moo!" It was an instant favorite for us.
I read this in my Music and Movement storytime this week. This was my middle-of-the-road book with this batch for me. The kids enjoyed it, but not as much as some of my others. I wish that there was a CD that came with it, but it was fun nonetheless.
For: readers looking for a book about music with fun sounds; readers who love farm animal books.
Red flags: Readers may be disappointed with the lack of actual music/music sounds. Readers may feel as though this could have been more effective.
All the animals have instruments for the band, except the cow. When it is time for the band to perform they don't know how to start. Cow steps up and leads them. This book is bright, busy and energetic. The text rhymes and has good flow. I just am not a fan of everytime you see Cow, their facial expression and eyes look like they were caught napping and you just asked them an important question-slightly frightened and shocked.
Of course, we're not breaking any new ground here with animals and instruments, but the text scans really well, the illustrations are '60s-style high contrast, sharp lined shapes, and the question of 'what can the cow do' is a fun thread throughout. Great for storytime, could definitely use with very young children up through pre-K.
I would use this one for story time often. It's so much fun! The pictures are colorful but maybe a touch too busy. The story itself, however, is perfect! I could have the kids pretend to play different instruments and lead the band. And I love that everyone has a different part to play to make the band a whole. Love it!
This one was fine, a short book about a bunch of barnyard animals putting on a concert, with cow wondering where she fits in the whole thing. Good rhythm, cute introduction to lots of musical instruments and not much more to it than that. My 4 year old enjoyed it a lot at daycare during a unit on farm animals and asked us to get it out of the library.
hahaha, i'm glad cow got to do something in the end, after all. humorous, chock full of colourful pages, and i think just the right amount of repetition in the text to make it all the more fun to read aloud.
The Barnyard Band is ready to play. Cow wants to join but what instrument will he play? The combination of animals, instrument sounds and moos will delight tiny toddlers and preschoolers! It will also be fun storytime read!
Harper (just shy of 2 years old) loved pointing out the different animals in this one! Might be the bright colors or just the cute illustrated animals but for some reason she just really loved the pictures in this book.
Cute and simple. Great for children who love animals and music. My class had fun pointing out the animals they knew. We talked about the instruments in the book - which ones we played in our classroom during music, and which ones we had never seen before.
"But what can cow do? Moo." When Sandra Boynton's _Barnyard Dance_ meets Christian Robinson, you get _Barnyard Boogie!_ Contemporary illustrations and an engaging board book delighted my little readers.
"Barnyard Boogie" by Tim McCanna is a rhyming story about animals in a band with the cow leading them. I really enjoy the illustrations and think that this story would be enjoyable for preschool to kindergarten age kids.
Fun and engaging picture book featuring farm animals who play in a music band together. Only the cow doesn't have an instrument - what shall they do? Great for the toddler and preschool age.
