With their first wedding anniversary just passed, retired Marine Corps Colonel Win Kirkland and Sheriff Sarah Pitt are more in love than ever and making plans to adopt two orphaned girls from Afghanistan. With their most challenging case behind them, the only threat on the horizon seems to be the approaching blizzard. But a much more dangerous storm is about to hit with a force that will exact a terrible toll on Win and Sarah's loved ones, their love and their lives.
A shadowy network has chosen McCrumb County, Indiana, as a testing ground for one of the deadliest threats facing the United States. Their ruthless psychological and physical attacks quickly escalate to murder, but who are these people? And what is their end game? Even Win's former intelligence colleagues seem stumped.
As Win and Sarah risk everything to identify and stop the perpetrators, they are quickly learning that what doesn't kill you… is waiting to try again.

3 /12 Stars. This is the third book in the Kirkland and Pitt series. While book 2 is still my favorite, I believe this was the most exciting of the three. Harding has gotten into a nice groove with these books and I'm enjoying this series.
It has been about a year since Win and Sarah have been married. They are even thinking about adopting children that Win knew from her time in the military. When threatening letters keep coming to Sarah, and her deputies are being shot at, Sarah and Win must figure out if someone is targeting her for being gay, or something even worse is going on. Can Sarah and Win together find those responsible, or will their relationship fail from all the stress?
As I said earlier, this was a really exciting book in this series. There was a lot of tense moments filled with danger, that kept me flipping the pages. Sarah and Win were not dealing with chasing down one murderer, they had to fight against a whole militia. And with Win's military contacts staying pretty tight lipped, you never knew when danger is around the corner.
Besides the suspense and excitement that takes up a lot of the book, the rest was about Sarah and Win's relationship. The bumps they are hitting from Sarah working such a stressful job. Sarah is such a likeable character and I feel a connection after reading about her for three books. I still think I have a love/hate relationship with Win. I like them as a couple, and I want them to be together, Win just irks me sometimes. I think Win can be a bit hypocritical to Sarah. She expects Sarah to do things a certain way, but Win doesn't want to do what she expects Sarah to do. Also, in this book Sarah was really struggling with all the violence and stress she has been under. Win basically gave her an ultimatum of go to therapy or we are done. Yes, Sarah needs help, but you should not threaten people to go to therapy. Especially, after a year of marriage you should not threaten leaving someone to get them to do what you want. And to be honest, I am still not happy Win got a way with cheating on Sarah (before marriage) back in book 1. It still never was addressed, and I don't know that it ever will be. I must admit it drives me nuts that it hasn't. Who knows maybe in book 4? I guess the reason I can still root for Sarah and Win, is I like Sarah, and I know how much she loves Win. I still enjoy their relationship and want a HEA.
While I did think book one was a little rocky, the rest of this series has been a really enjoyable read. Lot's of excitement, and some good relationship drama. If Harding come out with a book four, I will absolutely read it. I guess technically you could read this book without the others, as the mystery part is pretty contained to this book. You just would not have the background on all the characters and relationships. I personally would recommend starting at book one, I Will Meet You There. I would recommend this to people who like mystery/crime books with some action, but still want some romance.
An ARC was given to me by Bella, for a honest review.
This is another great installment in this series. I would strongly recommend reading the first and second books before this one. Hell, I was a bit confused a few times in this book and I have read the first two. From the ending here it seems another book will be coming in the future. Maybe these two women will finally get a reprieve because they have been through some serious shit thus far. Good read.
I think it might have helped if I'd read this author before so I was at least familiar with the characters. I had a hard time knowing if Sarah was speaking or Win, so it made reading more of a chore as opposed to pleasure. The relationship between the two women felt more like they might have placed the U-Haul before really getting to know each other. This became more apparent as the outside friction continued to mount and the walking on egg shells around each other commenced.
I love this series! I enjoy the thrill of the mystery/crime solving aspect of her books, but also the love and commitment evident between the main characters and supporting cast of characters as well. I can't wait for the next installment. Perhaps in the 4th book Win and Sara can get their happily ever after.
I loved Speak in Winter Code. Excellent combination of romance, heroism, mystery and life lessons. Win and Sarah make excellent main characters with a great list of supporting friends.
