The Master Coach: Leading with Character, Building Connections, and Engaging in Extraordinary Conversations

Rate this book
Today, coaching is recognized to be one of the most effective human resource development processes available, and it is becoming increasingly popular in organizations of all sizes. Faced with historically low levels of employee engagement (as little as 13% according to Gallup’s latest survey), business leaders see coaching as key to unlocking the human talent, creativity, and innovation that is hiding in plain sight in their workplaces. And rather than bring in external coaches for this purpose, they want to integrate coaching into their company culture—a 2015 study by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and the Human Capital Institute (HCI) found that 81% of organizations surveyed planned to train managers/leaders in coaching skills.

The Master Coach is written for these leaders, and is perfectly positioned to become the definitive book on the topic. Drawing on the wealth of experience that has made Gregg Thompson and Bluepoint Leadership Development the choice of numerous Fortune 100 companies, it illuminates the essence of what it takes to be a great coach. The Master Coach will appeal to leaders at all organization levels, showing them how to make a significant shift in their attitudes, values and behaviors and become more coach-like in all of their daily interactions and conversations.

The Master Coach is based on the simple but profound 3Cs Coaching Model. This proven approach asserts that to master the art of coaching one must have an exemplary Character that invites the trust of others, be able to form rapid Connections with others at deeply personal level, and have the ability to initiate and guide intense, attitude-changing Conversations. At every step, Thompson reminds readers that coaching is not merely about what the coach says or does; it is about who he or she is.

One of the better books on coaching I’ve read as it’s situated in the idea of “values based” coaching. A few quibbles/ it’s hard to find a good descriptor for the person receiving coaching but I found “the talent” to sound a bit off.
And despite warning against scripted questions all through the book ends with 60 scripted questions!!!

Might be the best book I've read all year! Truly extraordinary, I felt like I needed to bookmark every few sentences in the Audible version I listened to.

I ended up buying a hard copy as well so I think that pretty much says how much I valued the book.

One quibble, the narration wasn't the best I've ever experienced but fairly easy to ignore the flaws, probably would have been better with the author himself.

This is one of the books that significantly improved my thought process about how I should approach coaching capabilities.

Apart from applying my coaching skills at work, I used to coach people in the sport of running as a side-hustle and I used to look to thought processes about how I should coach folks on the ground.

The beauty of this book is that it makes you think deeper about your own capabilities in coaching, understanding yourself more and offers perspectives that you can work on further to become a better mindful coach.

In a nutshell, this book would not only make you a good coach in others' view but it would transform you as a better individual as well before you become a better coach.

The Master Coach is a solid read on the best practices by an expert in Gregg Thompson. Much new information and old that id forgotten but appreciated the refresher. At times I did find the content dull in parts but maybe that has to do more with my behavioral style which is clearly opposite to Gregg's. But on the credit side it had some very powerful learning moments for me.My biggest take away is Gregg's Big 60 Questions. ( This take away is clearly the ROI for me. ) The second take away which I have now adopted is that you don't need support materiel, we all have already what we need to be a great coach.

Coaching only works when your client – the “Talent” – sets the agenda, wants you as a coach and wants to change.

- Character: Share and stay true to your values. Coaching without values is worthless.
- Connection: Identify, believe in and build on your clients’ potential and strengths.
- Conversation: Focus every word and thought on the client, not your own interests.

Embrace emotion in coaching. Manage yours, and help your clients manage theirs.

As a coach, don’t sympathize, teach, mentor, advise or offer therapy. Let clients find their own solutions and take responsibility for their own change.

Good? Yes. Great? Not sure.

Some useful questions and perspectives. Not clear on what to do with the information. The author suggests there is a level of intuition and naturalness for coaching and he doesn’t want to be overalls prescriptive. However, it seems like it’s more about his business model, give enough away in the book, but save the most important jewels for expensive trainings/other offerings.

This was interesting in that it really spent less time on what and how to coach and instead focused on who you need to be to be a “master coach”. All in all, a decent book for those thinking about getting into coaching.

It's a very good book. Though, at times, I'm not sure if some of it was going over my head, if it just wasn't being received well, the message just wasn't understood. There is some real gold mixed in and for that I'm grateful.

I feel like everything he said could be spun as good information or complete BS. He was very vague and semi-contradictory.

Not an easy book to listen to on audible. But, if you want a detailed guidebook to coaching as your getting immersed, it is a good book.

For anyone interested in values based coaching this is a well rounded and worthwhile book. A good balance of theory, practice and example. I will certainly return to this book as a reference guide.

Great book that motivates and guides both aspiring and experienced coaches.

I like how the author expects coaches to live the “universal values” of “integrity, compassion, service, and honor.” Coaching without values has no purpose.

Demand that your clients live up to their potential, and hold them accountable for fulfilling that potential.

Don’t let your own limitations infect your clients. Don’t look for gratitude or praise from them.

As a professional coach, I already refrain from referring to my counterpart as “the coachee” and use “the client” instead. Using “the talent” seems a bridge too far for me, because I get Groundhog Day vibes: you know, “keep the talent happy.”
