Casey Peeler grew up and still lives in North Carolina with daughter. Her first passion is teaching students with special needs. Over the years, she found her way to relax was in a good book.
After reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston her senior year of high school and multiple Nicholas Sparks’ novels, she found a hidden love and appreciation for reading.
When Casey isn’t writing, you can find her listening to country music, spending the day at the lake, being a wife and dance mom, and spending time with friends and family.
Her perfect day consists of water, sand between her toes, a cold beverage, and a great book!
WOW. This is the first time I've read a book going in blind. I knew absolutely nothing about it at all. I have to say "I was beyond pleasantly surprised. Casey took me on a little adventure here by the name of Walker. He charmed the pants right off of me until he made a mistake, then I wanted to throttle him. So here I am, mouth open, head shaking back and forth thinking how can this guy "right his wrong?" If I tell you how then it gives the entire book away. I will say this; you need to grab this book when it releases. You need to feel it, love it and adhere to some magical words written by this Author. Boondocks is amazingly written!
If you’ve ever read a book written by Casey Peeler then you know you are going to read a story of values, morals, small town southern charm at its absolute best. If you are from the South like me, then it’s a story of your childhood. Peeler makes the true character of the South come alive between the pages of her books.
Boondocks is the story of a small southern town gone lost after the industry has moved away leaving illegal activities as one of the only ways to make money while focusing on two teens struggling against life to succeed. In many ways, I could identify with Peeler’s story having grown up in a small town exactly like she described washed away by life’s disappointed opportunities where a kid’s only opportunity is to leave for college. Both Walker and Chauna intrigued me as I read about two people who couldn’t have been from more different sides of the tracks face struggles in life together. It’s a story of two true soulmates sent to make the other one better.
Now without giving any spoilers away, I will say the Peeler takes a chance on this one. She isn’t known for her overtly sexy books with descriptive sex scenes. Usually her books are quite chaste. However in Boondocks, Peeler has matured her characters a little more than we are used to seeing. No, there still isn’t descriptive sex scenes but Peeler does an extremely well job of placing great writing in those emotionally connecting moments making vast descriptions irrelevant.
The only thing about Boondocks that I will say I wasn’t a fan of what the turmoil. Without going into details, I think that Peeler glossed over some deep emotions that could have put this book over the top for me. I feel like there should have been more of a struggle, a hurt, pain brought to the surface between the differences in Chauna’s family and Walker’s. Just one more emotional notch or pain would have sent this book from a 4 star to a 5 for me. Even with that being said, I’m proud and excited for Peeler who took a chance at writing something a little different. I’d love to see her morph into the contemporary romance genre or even an older/college themed new adult genre and see her talent grow further. Boondocks is definitely a book that you want to pick up if you are looking for a small town romance with the new bad boy in town.
I’m going to preface this review with a little note: this book is not quite a full four star rating. It was super close, but it wasn’t quite there. However, rounding it down was an impossibility. If I rounded the rating down, I would be doing this book a serious injustice.
Boondocks was my first Casey Peeler book, but I’m positive I’ll be reading more of her work. It was such a sweet story, one that pulls you in and holds on tight. I’ll admit that there were a few parts of the story where I wasn’t quite as engaged as I would have liked to be, but for the most part I found this book extremely difficult to put down.
We’re given a bittersweet young adult romance story, the tale of two completely different characters dealing with the harsh realities of life. As you would expect from any young adult contemporary read, we’re taken on a real rollercoaster of emotional situations. From the simple day-to-day struggles of teenagers, through to heart-breaking situations, this one will leave you hoping our main characters get the happy ending we know they deserve.
The only reason I didn’t give this a solid four star rating, making that little note that the start of this review, is because I found there were some point in this emotion heavy story where the emotions didn’t quite reach the highs they could have. Without a doubt, the story is emotion heavy – yet I didn’t feel certain emotions in the way I had hoped to. Certain scenes had the potential to break me, yet they didn’t, and due to that I couldn’t quite give it the full four star rating.
Overall, though, I had a lot of fun with this one. I’m certainly interested in reading more of the author’s work.
Awww! Young love is so sweet. Chauna and Walkers love was no exception. But just like any other teenager Walker is young and dumb! By no fault of his own this boy was up to no good. Chauna was a sweet sassy little thing. She kept a small circle of people and loved them dearly. She let Walker in! And when tragedy struck his wrong doing came to a head and she was HEARTBROKEN!!! I love this author's use of a southern setting and the country music laced through the book made me smile. It was such a heartwarming story of young love.
This is a coming of age love story, which is firmly aimed at teenagers.
The story centers around Chauna and Walker. She is the typical girl next door with a supportive and devoted family. He is the boy with a tough home life, criminal parents, and heading down a dangerous path.
Chauna’s father is part owner of the titular Boondocks. It’s a restaurant –bar and Chauna sings there every Friday night.
It’s at the Boondocks where Chauna and Walker meet, embarking on a relationship which changes the both of them.
This book touches on a number of important and realistic issues for teens: love, sex, losing a parent, and stable home lives, I did think the author missed the marked in certain situations. (Emotional, psychological, and at times, legal ramifications for certain characters). For example, the loss of a parent was glossed over and I thought further exploration could have really added an extra dimension to this work.
All in all, this is a solid read and I’ll be reading more from the author
I haven't read a sweet young love book, written more for young adults, that is absolutely amazing. This is about a boy, named Walker, whose parents are on the wrong side of the law and have forced their teenage son to follow them. They arrive in a small town and Walker has to finish the last week of school in a new school and meets the girl of his dreams. Chauna was raised by her father, after her mother died when she was really young. She has turned into an amazing daughter who listens and follows her fathers wishes, except one. She doesn't want to go to college, when she graduates from High School. She wants to own Boondocks, the local bar where her father's band performs in and she sometimes sings with. It's Friday and teen night at Boondock's. Chauna and her father are ready to go and perform for her friends. She's helping her friends behind the bar when she sees the most beautiful sight she's ever seen.
This is a clean, safe read story. I really enjoyed it, with the twists, male best friend and troubled history of both characters. It's a wonderful story and I recommend it for all to read.
Walker was a good character. He was flawed and believable. His family was one that did bad things to get by. He was forced at times to do things he didn’t like but he had determination to better his situation. When he met Chauna there is instant attraction and he is intrigued. Her voice draws him in and her inherent goodness has him wanting to become a better man. Chauna is a strong female character. She is well liked and loves her father but harbors guilt about something that happened in the past. Upon meeting Walker she is enchanted. She wants to know more but is a little wary. The story takes us through the story of Walker and Chauna and how they fall in love and all they go through. How they fight for each other and support each other. How Walker finds family and love. How he does what is right no matter how hard it is and how he grows and becomes more of who he wishes to be. It is the story how Chauna stands up for herself and how she grows and finds someone to love and who loves her. This is a little more darker than other Casey Peeler books I have read. We see more of a struggle with the characters. Not a drama struggle but one that is within. One where they have to stand up for themselves and their future so they can have a future. One that has them doing what is right and not what is easy. The path to love is a fight that isn’t with each other but all that is going on around them. the writing is alluring, story intriguing and sweet and characters are so wonderful.
What a gorgeous story of young love, promises made & secrets shared.
This is my first ever Casey Peeler book & based on the blurb I didn't actually realise it was a young love read, but I have to say I was far from disappointed. From the very beginning the characters pulled me in to their sweet romance, they tugged on my heart strings as they struggled to come to terms with their past, but also made my heart melt with the sweet, innocent young love of the forever kind, they shared.
Chauna is a sweet, beautiful, innocent southern girl - yet she is far from naive., as she is also spunky, feisty & knows actually what she wants in life. Having lived through so much heartache already, she never thought she would find some one to love - until Walker. The beautifully handsome newbie to town, with a smile to die for. Believing everyone deserves not to be judged by appearances, she offers the hand of friendship but ends up gaining so much more.
Walker. Oh this boy is gorgeous & I wanted to mother him & smother him from the start. Having managed to survive this long with a family he cant stand, he finds himself on the move again to yet another town & another school. He knows he doesn't fit in & knows people will judge, so why bother trying. Except the first night in towns he walks into Boondocks & is immediately lost to the girl who sings like an angel. Falling in love comes so easy, but hiding the shame & lies eats at his conscience. He knows he will love Chauna a lifetime & more if she will allow it, but fate hasn't played her hand yet & family have a way of hurting those who care about the most.
Their journey was lovely, refreshing & honest. I fell into the easy rhythm Casey wrote in & adored how the characters developed, as they made their way through their journey of love & life together. They faced heartache, challenges & tough decisions, with some really good plot twists, that kept the pages turning.
This was a cute read. Characters that were easy to give your heart permission to fall completely in love with. There was enough going on throughout the book to hold my attention from start to finish but it was the connection between Walker and Chauna that had me happy to be in the company. Walker was screaming out for roots, somewhere he could belong, he had spent most of his life moving from one place to another, primarily because his father didn’t seem to have the capacity to actually hold down a normal job, much preferring to live his life and by default consigning his family to life not only on the wrong side of the law but effectively on the run. Desperate to get to eighteen and to break free from the life his pathetically abhorrent parents had foisted upon him with his folks but that was a little ways off yet and until then he was back in the frame, playing along with his father’s latest scheme. Reluctant as usual to be involved, the small town of Barber was a means to an end for Walker’s father but when Walker meet Chauna he knew that this little town and this particularly beautiful girl was going to change his life, he was besotted with her. Chauna felt much the same way, this sexy newcomer piqued her interest and as they began to get to know each other there was only ever one way this was going, but they had a whole heap of baggage to get over before they found their happy! Could Walker show Chauna who he really was? Could he let her see what really made him tick, the secrets that he had been forced to conceal? He wanted more than anything to open up to her but never really got the chance to do so of his own accord, that decision was out of his hands on one fateful night when their lives changed irrevocably. But was it all over? Had the line in the sand finally been crossed or could Walker get what he wanted most…Chauna? This was a great read, wonderfully written.
Casey Peeler definitely tugged at my heart strings with her book, Boondocks. Young love, town secrets, and illegal activates, are only some of the few things in this book. Many emotions running through this book, so much so I caught myself yelling at the characters while reading. Like they could really hear me, LOL. Then again I may have fallen in love with this book because I'm a sucker for true love!
Walker has always been on the move with his parents, never settling down in one place for very long. Normally because of his father's illegal activities. All Walker wants to do is make it to eighteen and live his own life without getting caught up in his parent's lifestyle. Unfortunately being underage he is forced to help his father with these activities. That is exactly why they moved to the small town of Barber, his father, Troy's new line of business. Walker was to act like a normal teenage boy, go to school, work at the shop, and be on call for any movements Troy and his business partner needed him to make. Only once Walker laid eyes on Chauna and heard her beautiful voice he knew he was in trouble. Chauna couldn't get over the new boy in town, his sexy exterior and his manly motorcycle. Once they started to get to know each other that was the end of that, they fell completely in love. Walker knew he needed to honest with Chauna and the things he was a part of, the secrets that revolved around her whole world. He just couldn't bring himself to do it, and one night he wished he had. That night their lives changed for ever, taking everything they had away from them, lives were lost. Walker didn't think he would ever be able to get that one thing that mattered the most back, Chauna.
Boondocks is my first book by Casey Peeler. It is about Chauna and Walker living a little thing we call life. Chauna was born and raised in Barber. This town has seen hard times since the mill closed, but the one good thing about Barber is Boondocks. The local hot spot that holds great memories for Chauna. Her momma sang there before she died, her daddy plays with his band there and Chauna also sings there. She has dreams to work at Boondocks and some day own the place.
Walker was born into a family that does things outside the law. He has never had a stable place to live. His parents are not nice people, especially his father, who is always trying to earn a living while dealing in all things illegal. This has caused Walker and his family to have to uproot their lives like thieves in the night. Their current location for illegal activities is in Barber where Walker's dad is running moonshine for Ivan, and unfortunately, it involves Walker.
An undeniable attraction develops between Chauna and Walker. However, a tragedy may just tear them apart.
I enjoyed this book. I really liked Walker and Chauna's characters. Despite their differences, they were a perfect fit. It was great to see that Chauna's character was very accepting of Walker despite how different his appearance was from the rest of the locals. She came across as very caring. I also liked how Walker's character had morals and he was trying to be a better man even though his father was trying to bring him down. Overall, Boondocks was a very sweet story and a good read.
Oh My Lord!!! I went into this novel knowing absolutely nothing about it. what. so . ever. Well i can't say that. Given the title i had a strong feeling it took place in a country setting so of course i was immediately on board because i'm a true country girl.
Boondocks is realistic; that is one of the most important things for me when reading a novel that takes place in the country.
I really enjoyed the mentioning of country songs and also the Playlist that Casey Peeler has on spotify to go along with Boondocks. The quote below is one that made me laugh hysterically. If you have never watched the old movie Deliverance you probably will not find the humor behind this quote. "I just hope i don't hear banjo music, because if i do, i'm outta here."
This may be a really strange thing to say but i loved Walker's manners. I loved how he called his male elder's sir. I also loved the way he treated Chauna. Walker is a true southern gentleman with a bad boy exterior.
The ending of the novel shocked the hell out of me. I was not expecting any of what happened to actually happen. Sitting here having read and finished Boondocks i'm still shocked. That is what i call an unsuspecting twist.
If you are trying to get into new adult novels and you don't enjoy novels with a lot of racy sex scenes i highly recommend you read Boondocks by Casey Peeler! There is mention of sexy times but no racy details.
This was a very well written book. It had such a rollercoaster of emotions going on. There was a little bit of everything that happen in this book. There was drama, lies, deceit, passion, love all of these emotions that put you in your feeling. From the plot to the characters this book was almost perfect. This is a perfect summer read that will give you the feels and make you love the characters the whole time. Chauna and Walker will take you on a ride to finding happiness and in between you experience the ups and downs that they go through to make a relationship their own HEA. This book took me about a day and a half to finish and just because I didn’t want it to end. Walker and Chauna story is so worth reading this has got to be one of the best stories I have read this year. This is a must read story to me. Casey definitely gave a great read that will stick with you for a while. I cant wait to see what she does next .
If you haven't read Casey Peeler, then you are missing out!
You are going to love Boondocks! A sweet story of young love and growing up.
Chauna and Wilder were great! Chauna is the sweet local girl with the angelic singing voice. She loves her dad and her friends dearly. Wilder is new in town and the hot, mysterious boy who rides a motorcyle. They become friends and then something more, but Wilder's family is bad news. He has always put up with it, but after meeting Chauna, he vows to make his life better. Unfortunately, life catches up to him and it affects his relationship with Chauna and it is heartbreaking!
Casey Peeler really knows how to tug at your heartstrings and Boondocks is no exception. With a great cast of characters, a small town setting and the sweetness of first love, Peeler has given us another hit! What a great book!!
I truly loved everything about this book. It's been a while since I've read about a teen romance and this one was so good! Walker and Chauna were so adorable together! She was kind of like the "good girl" and he was the miss perceived "bad boy." I think this made them fit together so well! There were parts that were so country and small town that really made this story so believable, it made you think that it's possible that his were a true story. I also really enjoyed her relationship with all of the supporting characters I love how close she was to everyone at Boondocks and everything about her relationship with Logan. I really can't wait to read more by Casey after reading this book ♥
This was such a sweet, Southern story! Boondocks is a bar in a tiny town and that means everyone knows everyone and their business. Chauna has been daddy's little girl since she was born and just wants to be with him at Boondocks.
Walker just wants out of his life. He can't wait to turn 18 and get away from his parents and live his own life. And meeting Chauna makes him want that even more. He doesn't want to do the things his father makes him do because he wants to be good for Chauna.
Of course life happens and their budding romance suffers.
This was a great, small town, Southern NA read. I can't wait for more!
Chauna and Walker are two halves that make a whole. Walker is a great guy who is trying to better himself so he doesn't turn out like his parents. Walker's parents moved him to a very small town and everybody is judging him by his looks. Chauna was raised to treat everyone the same. Chauna takes Walker under her wing so he is accepted by her friends. These two from there go on a wild ride. So strap on your motorcycle helmet , grab some shine and get to reading. I couldn't put the book down until I knew how it ended. Oh and grab a couple of tissues.
I received and voluntary reviewed an ARC of this book. This book was read and reviewed by Stacy Aube for Cutting Muse Blog Review.
After reading the blurb for this book you just don't know what to expect. Young love, adventure and romance are some of what you get. Walker and Chauna couldn't be more different, but they just have this it factor that works. This is a great book for both younger and older audiences alike.
This is a sweet southern coming of age story. This is so different from what I usually read, but it is so well written. It surprised me at how easy I was able to get caught up in this book. There is a lot of drama and suspense, but most of all this book gave me goosebumps with all of the “feels” between Walker and Chauna. This is a book worth reading and if you are a younger reader, I think you will appreciate it even more!
Young love at its finest. These two are so cute and the depth of this book goes a little deeper than I thought it would. We follow these two characters through their last years of high school. We follow the twists and turns. We follow their love and their forgiveness.
Two Kentucky Girls and Books Blog 3.5 stars felt right for me on this book. Boondocks is my first book by this author. While I think this book is well written, it lacked certain elements to it. I didn't feel the emotions I thought should've been there. Chauna and Walker seemed great for each other, but fate has a plan. There are some plot twists that keep you hanging on. I would definitely read another book by Peeler.
I loved this book!! Walker is a sweetheart who wants to better himself and Chauna is a southern belle who just wants to stay in her hometown. They go through many different battles and hardships but come out stronger in the end! It's different then Casey's normal books but still has that southern charm you expect from her! I couldn't put it down!!
This book was phenomenal! It makes you want to be in this small town with these characters. They are all likable and people you would want to hang out with. It is such a sweet book! Many hardships and trails go on between the hero and heroine, but in the end they are stronger for it all. This is a different story from anything I have read recently!
I love this book, it has made me cry, laugh, get mad, and have all the emotions u can have on top of them! this is a perfect youn adult romance book! I got started on it late but it took me a while to read the book I was before I started it bit I'm almost done after a couple days, for some reason all of Casey peelers book do me this way, after all her books are what got e started reading, from her first book loosing Charley from the full circle series, I got hooked, and I can't wait to read the new one!!
