Hillary has wanted to see what’s outside the colony walls since she was old enough to realize that the world extends beyond. The colonists have been locked safe under the mountain for over a thousand years, yet somehow to Hillary it feels wrong. When she is offered the opportunity to be among the first to live external, she jumps at the chance. But first she’ll have to pass a grueling training and education program, withstand the stress of separation from her family, as well as endure the judgment of those who are too afraid to leave the safety of the mountain. On top of all of that, if she and the other recruits don’t succeed in re-learning to live outside, the entire colony—all that is left of humanity—may be lost forever.
Kelli Kimble was born in Ohio and has spent most of her life there. She attended a small liberal arts school with a minor in creative writing. She has a day job in computer programming but dreams someday of making writing her livelihood. She lives with her family and dogs.

The story moved along pretty quickly, mostly because the writing was about middle school level. I would actually recommend this to kids interested in dystopian novels without gore or romance.
I liked Hillary well enough as a main character. Most of the other characters were only vague outlines, and needed a lot more depth.
The world building was interesting enough, and the plot okay, though it needed more action. I'll read the next book in the series because I got it, and this one, on sale. I hope the next one has more substance.
For some reason the Earth has gone through a bitter time of intense coldness and most of humanity seems to have been wiped out. One group is within a structure in a mountain that has a group of scientists monitoring the conditions outside the mountain.
Hillary is 14, a normal girl going though as normal a life as she can. She finds out about a program that will require years of training with the end result being journeying out to the surface and possibly living there. Ten are chosen for the program but not all of them will stay. Hillary loses her best friend and, as the training continues, she finds out there are people in the compound that strongly oppose sending anyone outside.
Her training is not only academic but it's military in nature, putting her and the others through what is essentially a boot camp.
Then problems increase with internal problems with the team and get worse when it becomes obvious that not everyone is going to survive. The politicians in the compound start checking things out as the pressure in the colony increases between those opposing the protocol and those accepting it.
Then things go really, really bad after that for two of the team members.
It's a very interesting story so far, the first in a series of books.
I received this book from the Book Bub platform and really enjoyed reading it. Although the first installment of a book series the book is also a standalone.... the end can be your own imagination.. Hillary the main character is likable in her quest to see the world outside her utopian dwelling underground. Her community by retreating several generations ago to the safety of the insides of a mountain have survived a cataclysmic event that has wiped out civilization. Hillary and 7 other teens have been selected to be the first to dwell on the surface and this is the story of their training and the factions that are created amongst the group and also the animosity they face from their compatriots. An enjoyable read!
An engaging and thought-provoking series opener. Set in a post- apocalyptic world where few have ever ventured outside the safety of their base inside a mountain, this book was full of thrills and characters you just want to root for. Descriptive settings and scenes - like tasting a vegetable or experiencing the sun for the very first time - add tremendous depthh and realism to the story. Loved the surprise ending. Looking forward to seeing what else the author has in store in this series!
This is a story after the end of the world when some people are ready to take back the outside world. The main characters are young adults do their point of view is written in that manner. All in all a great introduction to a new series. I'm off to book two now.
Genuinely enjoyed this story. There are a lot of post-apocalyptic young adult stories out there, but this one is a little different take. Great world building and good characterizations, plus an interesting plot. And it ends on a cliffhanger, so now I’m off to read the next book!
Hundreds of years in the future the humans left live in a bubble- a big one. Dreams of repopulating the earth become reality- but it’s teens who get chosen for the experimental outing. Rules are broken, secrets are spoken- now they’re outside and CANT come back in!
I think thjs book would be enjoyed by a younger reader than me at 74. The storyline is a good one and i did finish it and it does make me want to know what happens to Hill and George
I really loved this book. I can’t wait to read the rest. I can’t wait to see what happens to George and Hillary. But especially Richard. The cliffhanger can go in so many different directions, it leaves you longing for more. Great work of literature.
I'm typically a slow reader, but I flew through this book! Kimble weaves a great story with real characters and plenty of twists. Hillary is impossible not to root for!
Grab a cup of spiro and settle in for a great series.. Can't wait for book 2!
Excellent storyline and characters which were easy to follow and identify with. I really loved this book and could not put it down. I highly recommend this book.
