An incredible read...

I have not had the pleasure of reading a book as engaging as this for many, many years. An incredibly personal walk with God that, though we may not be attacked by cancer, can be adapted to our lives and WILL AND DOES draw us closer to God through these personal and Biblically supported words. I was skeptical at the start, but quickly found I was drawn into a beautiful experience, sharing the author’s desperation for God, and finding Him in everything. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, no matter your situation. Even if you think you don’t need God, read it. It is better to investigate and be sure than reject in ignorance.

I only wish I'd had this book five years ago when I was going through breast cancer. This is a wonderful resource for encouragement and strength during a difficult time none of us would choose to go through. But we don't have to go through it alone. God is always there, holding our hand. When you get to the point when you don't know how or what to pray, the words are there for you in this book. And all of them are backed by scripture. I sat and cried through the introduction and the first few pages of chapter one. God loves us so much and would never want us to go through this cancer in our bodies but in spite of that he will be with us through our surgeries, chemo, radiation and beyond. Many blame God but it is clearly stated that God does not give us this disease. Disease is the result of sin in this world.
Twenty one chapters cover topics such as God's grace, mercy, peace, righteousness, presence, and many others but most of all his love. The author, having gone through breast cancer herself, truly knows what it's like and the feelings that go with it. This book is a must for those going through any kind of cancer, their caregivers, or just anyone that needs encouragement and reassurance of God's great care and love for each of us.
I received this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given.

You know how Jesus Calling is written as if Jesus is speaking? (Full disclosure: I’ve never read it because the blurbs that I’ve heard are just borderline—no, scratch that—intensely sacrilegious.) Yeah, the beginning of each chapter in this book is the same, though from the perspective of God the Father. Again, deeply sacrilegious, writing words and pretending God said them. Sure, both authors use scripture to get their point across, but…I don’t know man, it’s wrong, putting words “into God’s mouth”. The rest of the chapter is a prayer based off of a scripture verse and while it seems “okay”, I’m not sure every verse and prayer is a prayer that we can claim. (AKA: we’re not Jews.) Anyway, I finished it. Reluctantly. And only in my quest to finish every kindle book I’ve downloaded.

1/17/26 Update: 582 left to go. At current projections, I will finish in 2034.

Great tool for prayer

For anyone needing help with praying, audibly, this book is for you. The author has written beautiful prayers; each begin with a scripture referencing one of God’s promises.

Although the book is written for someone going through cancer, the prayers can be easily adapted to another struggle, or for praying for someone else.

I am not suggesting that the book gives you “the magic prayer” to cure or overcome; I’m saying by speaking this prayers aloud, customizing them for you or your family, you practice praying, praising, requesting, glorifying and exalting. Through the prayers and thoughtful consideration and meditation upon the words you speak, I think a greater intimacy with God is found.

A friend gave me a copy of this book as I began my cancer journey. I love the abundant Scripture passages and the personal way it is written, as if Jesus is speaking directly to me. I've made reading from it a part of my daily quiet time.

Praying for the Cure is written by Mary J. Nelson. The author is also a, speaker, pastor and cancer survivor. This is such a good book that it is very evident that the author has lived what she has written for us to benefit from.

In this book Mary J. Nelson reminds us many times that God is a healer. He does not give us cancer, he does not use illness to punish us, to get our attention or teach us a lesson. While He walked on the earth He cured people of their illnesses. God partners with the medical and faith communities to heal us. The medical treatments are limited, while God’s power is totally unlimited. The cancer battle does not belong to the patient or doctor, it belongs to God.

Another part in the book I found really interesting is the parts on prayer. The author tells us that when we pray to believe first and then to receive God’s answer to our prayer. Another things the author writes that I find extremely interesting is that we often pray “if it is Your will”. If we are seeking medical care and it is not God’s will that we be cured, then we are going against God’s will. It is God’s nature to heal us, He wants us healed.

Being a cancer survivor, I wish I had this book when I was going through my cancer battle. The book has 21 chapters of encouragement based on Bible verses, followed by short prayers also based on Bible verses. The author points out that we may cancer but that is not our identity. And that often times our focus becomes centered on our illness, doctor appointments, medications, etc. and that our focus gets taken off of God. This book is written is such a way that even when it becomes hard to focus on prayer and reading the bible, this book will help guide us through our devotion and prayer time.

Mary J. Nelson has written a wonderful book called “Praying for the Cure”. It is a book containing hope and help for those stricken with cancer. As a cancer survivor, Ms. Nelson knows the struggles that come with the announcement that you have cancer. It is the scariest sentence you will ever hear. I know, because I am also a cancer survivor. The meditations and prayers that are found in this special book are a gift for those who have been just diagnosed, are receiving treatment, or who are in remission. Even though the cancer may not be present in your body any more, a survivor always has that “what if” in the back of the mind. Some of the treatments cause so many forms of reactions that it’s hard to know if the medicine is causing your symptoms or if there is another reason. That is the part that is constantly lurking for a survivor. These meditations and prayers can help those patients keep their faith and their hope alive. I am so pleased that I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, but the book deserved that…a positive review. I would recommend this to family, friend, or yourself if you are suffering from cancer or know someone who is. I think this book would be of help to anyone suffering from any kind of dreaded disease. We can all use the hope it gives.

What a treasure! Mary J. Nelson’s powerful new book, “Praying for the Cure,” shares with those diagnosed with cancer God’s desire, ability, and power to do heal as he promises when they ask in earnest and expectant prayer.

While Mary was the inspired writer, God is the true author of this profound love letter from the Lord and Savior of the Universe. His message to the hurting is so clear and direct you can almost hear his voice as you read the book.

Each chapter and sub-chapter includes a bible verse and a prayer. It can be used as a book, a devotional, or as the basis for a bible study. The chapters are written as a dialogue between God, (and his thoughts about his love, hope, and plan for us in the midst of our sufferings) and in return, the thoughts, questions, doubts, and fears of someone battling cancer. While the book is simply and understandably written, it condenses profound truths into beautiful pearls of faith and hope for those suffering from cancer.

The comforting message of God’s love, provision, and power is so universal that this book could also serve as an excellent resource for anyone dealing with any of life’s physical, mental, financial, relational, or spiritual challenges. I would highly recommend this book to all.

I read this book to learn how to pray for friend with cancer. I found that its Holy Scripture-based truths about God are healing me as well. Pastor Nelson, a breast-cancer survivor and a hands-on leader in Pray for the Cure ministries at her church and others – gives us the welcome daily tools (prayers) to fight the battle bravely, with His peace, and with His companionship. Our most powerful weapon is reciting back to God His promises to heal us – physically, spiritually, eternally – because God is for us, and God is able. Mary’s impressive, highly practical work reminded me of what Charles Spurgeon once said: “Think not that God will be troubled by your importunately reminding Him of His promises. He loves to hear the loud outcries of needy souls. It is His delight to bestow favors. He is more ready to hear than you are to ask. The sun is not weary of shining nor the fountain of flowing. It is God’s nature to keep His promises; therefore go at once to the throne with, ‘Do as Thou hast said.’” 2 Samuel 7:25 (KJV). With this book you will have the daily Promises to present back to God for healing.

Praying for the Cure by Mary Nelson is a wonderfully inspirational book. As noted in the full title, it is a powerful prayer guide and indeed it is! The author, herself a cancer survivor, has written an exceptional book of prayers for those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Each chapter is written as a personal word from God Himself and ends with a number of specific prayers that relate to that particular chapter's theme and are based on a passage of scripture. The chapters are profound truths solidly based on God's Word and the work He has done on our behalf and are intended to bring hope, comfort and ultimately increase one's faith and trust in a loving God. Although stated to be a comfort for those afflicted with cancer, the book would be an encouragement to anyone going through a difficult circumstance. Just to read the first sentence of the book, "My child, you are not alone" is a comforting reassurance to one whose heart may be broken. Praying for the Cure is a dynamic resource for those in need of an infusion of hope and grace into a challenging situation.

Truly comforting

Cancer is not a diagnosis you want to hear from your doctor. I offered to read/review this book because I know some wonderful people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Some lost the battle, some beat the odds (my husband included) and some are still battling. I found encouragement and hope between the pages of this book. I intend to pass in on to someone else who could use it.
Praying for the Cure is filled with answers to many questions, including “Why did I get this disease?” and “Is God punishing me?” The book doesn't judge, it only encourages and helps comfort through verses and a unique commentary. I highly recommend this book to those who are battling cancer or to those who know someone close to them battling this disease.

What a gift this book is! Through the scripture and teaching, Mary Nelson, a pastor and cancer survivor, will equip anyone going through the battle of cancer with God’s word and truth. The beginning of each chapter is written as if Jesus himself is speaking directly to you and will help line up your thoughts to the mind of Christ. Then she highlights scriptures on topics such as Love, Grace, Mercy, Peace, etc. and equips you with prayers. Praying God’s word is one of our most powerful weapons and this book will equip you to do just that! I believe this book will be a game-changer for many people!

A hope filled treasure! It has been a long time since I've read anything so rich in God's truth and power. Rooted in the Word of God and practically applied, my spirit was stirred and my faith was strengthened as I read the words, prayed the prayers and just sat and meditated on the truths that were brought to life in this book. I would highly, highly recommend this book for anyone going through cancer and for anyone who knows anyone going through cancer, a terminal illness or just a tough season in life. The world needs the encouragement and hope that Praying for the Cure shares.

Pastor Mary Nelson uses her own personal experiences and unique attributes of God, along with prayer and scripture, to provide hope and encouragement to those who are seeking the Lord for healing and strength during their battle with cancer. Her ability to pray for, encourage, and walk beside these courageous individuals comes from the throne room of God. I highly recommend this book for individuals looking for healing, wholeness, strength and freedom during their cancer journey. Rachel Olson, LISW

This book is a book of prayer for those who have cancer. It is a book of comfort and can give a voice to the things we need and want to say to God. It covers different aspects such as God's timing, His will, guidance, presence, mercy, etc. After reading through the book I find it can be used as not only a way to help us voice the thoughts of our hearts, but it also makes for a great devotional study. There are plenty of Bible verses to help provide comfort and understanding of the sections. Each chapter covers a different theme.

In her book, 'Praying for the Cure', Mary gives us step by step guidance in the journey of healing from cancer. She teaches us to pray with power and authority, and her choices of bible verses and prayers hit the bull's-eye. This book is not only a powerful weapon against cancer and a giver of hope, it brings us into greater intimacy with Father God.
