‘And they think it’s all over…’ Well it was until Sean got stationed in West Germany - Two Worlds Wars, a World Cup and The Berlin Wall could not stand in the way of Britain’s new secret weapon - Sean Connolly – the soldier who thought Detente was a kind of toothpaste whose sole purpose was to warm up the cold war and teach the nasty Ruskies a thing or two. Yes it’s time once again to thrill to the amusing adventures of Bombardier Sean Connolly amidst the Red Peril and discover 101 uses for a Bratwurst and that a Herforder isn’t actually someone who lives in Hereford! If you like M.A.S.H. and B.A.O.R. then you will thrill to the outrageous escapades of Sean & The Red Menace.
Sean Connolly will be familiar to listeners of BBC Radio Five Live and Radio Wales. Among his more than 50 books aimed at children and adults are Wholly Irresponsible Experiments and Witness to History: The Industrial Revolution. He has also written for the Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia. His three children are either collaborators or guinea pigs, depending on the project.
A good read if one has served in BAOR during the subject period. It is an amusing book but a pity that a proofreader wasn't available before publication. The only real criticism I have is a lack of accuracy when translating some of the initialisms (e.g. PVR does NOT mean Purchase Voluntary Retirement but Premature Voluntary Retirement). Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to reading further volumes by Sean Connolly.
