مستشرقة المانية ولدت في مدينة إرفورت بوسط ألمانيا لعائلة بروتستانتية تنتمي إلى الطبقة الوسطى..في عام 1939 نزحت مع الأسرة إلى برلين وفيها بدأت دراستها الجامعية للأستشراق. وبعد عام واحد بدأت العمل على رسالتها للدكتوراة حول مكانة علماء الدين في المجتمع المملوكى تحت إشراف ريشارد هارتمان وقد انتهت منها في نوفمبر 1941 وهى في التاسعة عشر من عمرها ونشرتها عام 1943 في مجلة "عالم الإسلام" تحت عنوان "الخليفة والقاضى في مصر في العصور الوسطى المتأخرة".
وفى نوفمبر من عام 1941 عملت كمترجمة عن التركية في وزارة الخارجية الألمانية. وفى وقت الفراغ واصلت اهتمامها العلمى بتاريخ المماليك حتى تمكنت من عمل فهارس لتاريخ ابن إياس. وفى مارس 1945، قبيل نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية بقليل، انتهت من رسالة الدكتوراه في جامعة برلين عن الطبقة العسكرية المملوكية.
وقد احرزت،، في عام 1995 وكأول مستشرقة ودارسة للإسلام جائزة السلام الألمانية التي يمنحها اتحاد الناشرين الألمان ويسلمها رئيس الدولة الألمانى.

My Soul Is a Woman: The Feminine in Islam by Annemarie Schimmel explores the role of women and the feminine in the mystical tradition of Islam (Sufism).

Schimmel was an internationally renowned scholar who wrote extensively on Islam and mysticism. Fluent in several languages, including German, English, Urdu, Persian, Arabic, and Turkish, she was a professor of theology at Ankara University for several years before moving to Harvard where she inaugurated the Indo-Muslim Studies program. She was a prolific writer, publishing numerous books and articles on Islamic literature and mysticism.

In My Soul Is a Woman: The Feminine in Islam, Schimmel dedicates a chapter on the role women played in each of the following topics: women and the Prophet of Islam; in Sufism; in the Qur’an and Islamic traditions; and in the education of the soul since “soul” (nafs) is a feminine word in Arabic. She also explores the respect paid to elderly women and mothers in the Islamic tradition.

Schimmel provides copious examples of the significant contributions made by a number of female mystics to Islamic mysticism. She carefully distinguishes between the role and expectations placed on women in the Quran and the rigid restrictions and prohibitions placed on them in society, attributing the latter to misogynistic cultural influences which became increasingly intransigent throughout time and which deviate in significant ways from the Qur’an.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the book is Schimmel’s exploration of a variety of Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and Indo Muslim Sufi love poems. Schimmel reads these poems as metaphors for the beloved’s yearning for union with God. The beloved can be male or female. He/she goes on a quest to seek the beloved with an unwavering dedication that serves as a role model for other seekers. This interpretive lens opens the poems up to new readings in which every action, every step, can be read as a metaphor along the mystical path to God.

The book is recommended for those seeking an understanding of the role of women and the feminine in the mystical tradition of Islam.

تحاول المؤلفة آنا ماري شيمل في كتابها هذا أن تخيط ثوبا أنثويا للإسلام بنكهة صوفية، من خلال البحث عن تجليات الأنوثة في نصوص الإسلام وتمظهراته عبر التاريخ والمجتمعات المشرقية. فتبدأ بمكانة المرأة في الإسلام عموما لتعرج على مجموعة من أعلام نسائه وخاصة المتصوفات منهن، ثم لتدخل في الأساطير والشطحات لتنتهي بصبغ الكون كله بصبغة أنثوية! ه

الكتاب في فصوله الأولى كان ممتعا، ثم صار مغرقا في الرمزية وعدم الاتساق، حتى بات مملا...ه
عموما لست معجبة بتأنيث الوجود، ولا تجذبني كثيرا التأملات والشطحات الصوفية على هذه الشاكلة، ولكني أحب أسلوب شيمل، وقد اختبرته سابقا مع كتابها الممتع عن الأحلام في العالم الإسلامي (أحلام الخليفة)، وهو نفس أسلوبها في هذا الكتاب… وصراحة أفضل وصف لهذا الأسلوب هو أنه “خبيصة” بالمعنى الحقيقي للكلمة، ولكنه خبيصة لذيذة على أية حال… فهو ليس بالدراسة الأكاديمية الجادة التي يمكن لتحليلاتها أن تزيد الفهم في ظاهرة ما، لكنه أقرب لحكاية رومانسية، تجمع نتفا من كل شيء آت من تلك البقعة المسماة شرقا بالمفهوم الكلاسيكي للكلمة، تخلط التشريعي بالاجتماعي بالأسطوري بالتاريخي بالشعبي، والتوحيدي بالوثني! والموضوعي بالذاتي… وعلى امتداد مساحات شاسعة وأزمنة متباعدة وأفكار متنافرة متضادة وثقافات متنوعة… كل ذلك يصهر في بوتقة واحدة، ليخرج ما تسميه بعالم إسلامي شرقي، هو في حقيقته عالم آنا ماري شيمل الغرائبي الحالم… وكأنه أحد تلك اللوحات الانطباعية، التي تتشكل من لطخ ألوان كثيرة كثيرة مختلفة ومتنافرة… لوحة جميلة مستلهمة من الواقع ولكن لا علاقة لها به ولا هي حتى تفسير له أو تساعد في زيادة فهمه، بل هي شيء منفصل عنه… ولذلك فالكتاب لا يشكل صدمة روحية وفكرية ولا هو إفاقة لفهم أبعاد أخرى في الإسلام والقرآن لدرجة أن تدفعنا لإعادة قراءة الموروث على إثر هذه “الإفاقة”! كما تقول المترجمة في المقدمة، إذ هذا كلام مبالغ فيه جدا… بل الكتاب رحلة أدبية غرائبية داخل عيني مؤلفة ذات روح جميلة ومفتونة بالشرق… رحلة ممتعة إلى حد ما لكنها لا تشبع العقل فيما يتعلق بالموضوع المطروق… ولا تملأ الروح بالمعاني الربانية… ه

أما الترجمة فجيدة في الفصول الأولى، ثم انقلب الموضوع لطلاسم فيما بعد، ولست أدري ألمشكلة في الترجمة أم في الكتاب نفسه… وأعجبني أن المترجمة لميس فايد قد وضعت تعريفا وافيا بالأعلام المذكورين، وهم كثر… ه
الكتاب كان أقل مما توقعته… ثلاث نجمات للفصول الأولى… ولا شيء للفصول الأخيرة… ه

وطبعا سأعاود القراءة لآنا ماري شيمل ثالثة ورابعة وعاشرة… والتمتع بكرنفال الألوان في لوحاتها الانطباعية عن الشرق… ه

يمكن أن أختصر هذا الكتاب بجملة سلمى لما علمت أنّي أقرأه قائلة: ( هذا الكتاب ليس لك)
تقصد أنّ موضوعه لا ينطبق على وفاء عدوّة المرأة هههههههه..
ولكن سبب قراءتي له أنّه وصل ليدي هدية من سلماي لصديقتها صفاء فاغتنمت فرصة – وأنا الشّريرة – أن أقرأ للمستشرقة آنا ما ري شمل وأكون قدر المستطاع متابعة لأغلب كتاباتها.. وأيضاً على مبدأ: (بلاش.. كتّر منه)... وأضيف سبباً آخر أنّ حجمه الصّغير أغراني بقراءته لأضيفه لعدّاد الكتب التي يجب أن أنهيها هذا العام وكان العام قد أوشك على نهايته..
ولكن...
ليس لي هذا الكتاب وها أنا لم أعطه أكثر من نجمة واحدة لا أعلم على ماذا استحقّها..
ربّما لمجرّد أنّه كان عند سلماي..
لأجد نفسي أنّي أنا الوحيدة التي أعطيته تلك النّجمة اليتيمة فالغالبيّة أشادت به وثمّنته..
سأعتبر ذلك نقطة تميّز 
على كلّ للنّاس فيما يعشقون مذاهب..
ولم يكن هذا الكتاب من مذهبي..

I read this book while sitting in the Muslim prayer room at Princeton University yesterday. I read it in the evening, after I had finished praying Magrib. My heart felt depleted and so I picked up the shortest book in the library there. Once I started reading it, I didn't stop and didn't leave until I had finished reading it.

I learned that in the mystical realm, Muslim women have achieved excellence, have been held to the highest positions. Muslim women mystics are part of the tradition of Islamic spirituality. Women have played significant roles in the lives of other mystics, other men, and also, had led and written about their own mystical experiences. Some mystics were also mothers and wives, but many were not. I have a list of some of their names.

Although I knew the story of Majnun, the man who falls so desperately in love with Leila, that he loses his wealth, beauty, and sanity in search of his beloved--I did not know that there exists a parallel story of SASSI from the Indo-Muslim subcontinent, in which a woman quests for her beloved and endures similar stages of grief and disaster.

Sassi is born as a Hindu princess, but once her parents learn that she is destined to marry a Muslim man, she is sent away in a basket on a river (sounds like another biblical story you know?). She is raised by a poor Muslim family. Her beauty is so remarkable that others come just to watch her work. A Muslim king falls in love with her, and they run away together. He gives up his status, for fear of derision and censure from his family probably. When Sassi wakes up after spending a night with him, she finds him gone and her quest ensues to find her beloved.

Quest narratives about love fascinate me. I think it's extraordinary how we as human beings imagine and experience love, and link that love with God. The Sufi quest for God is imagined as a woman's quest for her lover, who she never sees again until death unites her with her Creator. But I was alarmed to learn that such a narrative exists! That it is told from the female voice.

I would like to read the translation of the entire story in the future.

كتاب رائع يتناول المرأة في الإسلام بوجه عام وفي الصوفية بوجه خاص ولعل أجمل ما في الكتاب هو دفاع شيمل المستميت عن مكانة المرأة في الإسلام وكيف تحولت الثقافات والتقاليد إلى قيود دينية غير مذكورة في القرآن والسنة وكيف تدهورت أحوال النساء على مر التاريخ والكتاب يركز على الدوائر الصوفية في شبه القارة الهندية على خلاف الحديث المستمر عن صوفية بلاد فارس وشبه الجزيرة العربية وقد استمتعت جدا بتحليل صورة النساء في شعر الهند وباكستان والقصص الثلاث التي تختم بهم شيمل كتابها عن ساسي وسوني ومروى والرمزية الصوفية الجميلة في قصصهن المؤثرة ... حقيقي كتاب جميل

In this book Annemarie Schimmel attempts to fill in the gaps of the feminine aspects that have been left behind in Islamic interpretation, leaving an unbalance.

She identifies the male dominated and sometimes misogynistic tendencies of the culture and how it’s affected the interpretation of Islam. Schimmel points out how women were viewed by poets, used as negative metaphors as in the lower self, temptation or the doniya (Worldly life), possibly due to a feminine noun for the word for 'ego' the “Soul inciting to evil”. in the Qur’an. Which has lead to the demonisation of women.
Schimmel also pushes forward the omitted aspect, that the ‘Accusing soul’ and finally the ’Soul at peace’ are also feminine nouns in the Qur’an. She also quoted how women were used as negative metaphors by poets. But Also positive quotes by some of these same poets, even by the Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him). Who stated that women being one of the dear things God has made to him.

Thus suggesting that the problem is not with Islam but it's interpretation due to misogynistic attitudes in the culture.

Schimmel writes a little about Ibn Al-Arabi, and how highly he considered the woman, he wrote that women could attain the highest mystical rank, and how he placed a strong emphasis on the role of the feminine which earned him the accusation of tending toward “Parasexual symbolism” by modern Muslim critics.

The only issues I had with this book are that firstly it’s written in an academic style so at some parts it feels informative without drawing one in and connecting. Or maybe it’s just that i’m reading a lot of poetry lately :o)
But some parts do feel skimmed over. However what might be contributing to this sense is that it’s only a small book considering the vast subject Schimmel is trying to portray. I expected it to be a bigger book before it arrived. However It’s very informative and gives you points to research further and a lot of insight. I would recommend as it’s an invaluable piece of work.

Buku yang memberi pandangan Islam ttg wanita dari golongan Sufi. Islam melalui apa yang di sampaikan oleh Nabi, Muhammad S.A.W mengangkat martabat wanita ke satu tahap yang lebih mulia sejak kemunculannya. Kemudian ianya diteruskan oleh kaum muslimin di seluruh dunia. Sepeeti yang kita sesia maklum, kuasa dan tingkatan lelaki melebihi perempuan dalam majoriti budaya dalam masyarakat, namun Islam melakukan perubahan dalam cara dan gaya pandang memahami tingkatan perempuan. Dalam Islam, seperti yang dihuraikan dalam buku ini dengan mengambil contoh beberapa karaya besar para Sufi, wanita dan lelaki cumalah beza di tahap alat kelamain, padahal dari sudut pandang spiritual tidak ada bezanya. Yang membezakan setiap manusia adalah iman, atau dalam kata lain erti dan penghayatan Cinta yang sebenar terhadap Kekasihnya (Allah).

I don't read a lot of non-fiction books but this title caught my attention at the book fair. Even though it was very informative, entertaining at parts (especially the poetry snippets), it dragged for some parts and I skimmed some parts of it. I don't know if it's the translation or what exactly, but this book made me aware of the meaning of language barrier. I had to reread a few parts more than once to wrap my head around it. Nonetheless, it was a sort of new experience to read about Sufism, and I especially loved the epilogue.

بداية، أشير الى الترجمة الممتازة مع ادراكي صعوبة نقل كتاب فكري بدقة ودون أغلاط تذكر ..

أول مطالعة لي للمستشرقة المعروفة رغم ان كتابها الأشهر"الأبعاد الصوفية في الإسلام" موجود ينتظرني في مكتبة منزلنا منذ أمد
الصراحة الصراحة …
أربكني كثرة الهوامش لكثرة أسماء المتصوفين والمتصوفات المذكورة بشكل متوالي مما اثقل النص ولم يفده !

أرادت المؤلفة ان تظهر رؤية الاسلام الحقيقية للأنثى مستهلة بفصل كامل عن النبي والنساء ، موضحة فيما بعد نماذج عديدة من المتصوفات خاصة مما أثرن في الفكر الاسلامي على مدى التاريخ ..

أرادت آن ماري الكشف عن الروح الانثوية للوجود ، مرتكزة غلى خلفية فكرية مُحبة للجوانب المضيئة للحضارة والثقافة الإسلامية ، لكني لم أجدها موفقة ، فالمعلومات سطحية أتت سردية بحثية بحتة، لكن الخلاصة بالفقرة الاخيرة أدت المعنى :)

يبقى الكتاب مفيداً .. لكنه دون توقعاتي ربما

#وما تغلب العنصر الذكوري على الاقل في الحياة العملية في كل الاديان والثقافات هو أمر لاينكره أحد، وأن الاسلام قد تسبب في كثير من المعاناة للمرأة بسبب التفسيرات القرآنية التي ضاق أفقها على مر القرون، علاوة على مالعبته العادات والتقاليد التي لا علاقة لها بالقرآن بتاتاً ، إلا أنها أخذت شكلاً قرآنياً متزايداً . فالكثير مما يسمى اسلامي اليوم ماهو الا تقاليد وأعراف. على الجانب الآخر علينا حماية تصوراتنا عن الحرية التي تتبنى تفسيرات ليبرالية لكنها تجنح الى ان تكون مجردة من المبادئ ونرى من خلالها العالم ونحكم على العادات والتقاليد التي لاتثبر اعجابنا وننعتها بالقديمة بل ونلعنها. فأي محاولة لنقل أية أفكار،حداثية الى العالم الإسلامي سيتم تفسبرها ببساطة من المسلمين على أنها محاولة جديدة من الاستعمار، وسيتم رفضها وتنتج مقاومة متعنتة ضدها."

Begitulah Prof. Dr. Annemarie Schimmel mengutip salah satu kisah asketis tentang peran perempuan dalam Islam, khususnya dalam tradisi sufistik, sebagai upaya mengkritik pemikir feminis Barat yang kerap menganggap Islam tidak memprioritaskan hak-hak perempuan.

Saya bisa bilang bahwa buku ini cukup cantik. Selain karena memang buku ini mengangkat topik yang saya sukai, namun ada alasan lain: perasaan saya yang hanyut tidak seperti perasaan yang saya rasakan ketika membaca buku nonfiksi. Mungkin karena di dalamnya Schimmel banyak menyematkan puisi, prosa, atau karya sastra lain yang menangkap perhatian saya.

Hal yang membuat saya takjub sekaligus malu saat membaca buku ini adalah ketika saya mengetahui bahwa Schimmel adalah seorang nonmuslim yang sangat mengagumi Islam. Bahkan kapasitas keilmuan beliau tentang Islam jauh di atas saya yang menganut Islam sejak lahir.

Berawal dari ketidaksengajaan menemukan buku My Soul Is a Woman ini, berujung pada pemahaman yang lebih mendalam tentang hakikat perempuan dalam Islam dan keinginan untuk mengenali keyakinan sendiri secara lebih intens lagi. Betapa sebuah bacaan yang lembut untuk para pencinta-Nya yang (ingin) taat! ❤

I was hoping to get some external view about this subject, but totally disappointen with the translation of the book in Turkish. It's impossible to understand and follow in modern language. I don't know what the translator was thinking, do you want people to read the book or not!!! It needs to be today's Turkish, not Ottoman Turkish from 19th century. It's a big shame.

ينص توصيف الكتاب على أن الكاتبة تستعرض مجموعة من الأفكار "تزيح الستار، عن دور المرأة في الإسلام، الذي أسيء فهمه طويلاً" وبناء على هذا الفرض بدأت القراءة إلا أني ما وجدته في الكتاب كان باعتقادي بعيداً جداً عن الوصول لهذه الغاية.
معظم استشهادات الكاتبة كان من الأقوال والأشعار والحكايا الصوفية الإسلامية عبر القرون والقارات، تحاول من خلال عرضها أن تبين الدور الفعال للمرأة في التيار الديني (الصوفي تحديداً)والمكانة التي تتمتع بها المرأة في الإسلام ونظرة الدين الإسلامي للمرأة!
ولكن ما علاقة هذا بالإسلام! فالتيار الصوفي قد نشأ لاحقاً بعد انتشار الإسلام في بلاد (شرق آسيا خاصة) كان قد اعتنق سكانها سابقاً أدياناً غنوصية في محاولة تكيف محلي !؟فكيف يمكن الاستشهاد بالمصادر الصوفية لنقاش أفكار ومواضيع الدين الإسلامي والأصل موجود (وهو الدين الإسلامي ومصادره) الذي بالإمكان نقاشه مباشرة دون الحاجة لذكر الآيات عرضاً عبر القصص الصوفية وربط هذه القصص بالمعاني القرآنية !

"Mütercim, bu kitabın tercümesinde kullandığı dil hususunda, ceberrut "öz Türkçecilik" umdesine boyun eğmek istememiş, daha ziyade ve tabii ki becerebildiği kadarıyla "doğruluk bütünlük" umdesini esas alımşhr. Zira yetersizliği ve fukaralığı fazilet mertebesine yükseltip, yanlış ve nefessiz bir tercümenin "özbeöz"(?) olmasının vicdanları tatmin etmeyeceği izahtan varestedir. Muhakkak ki Türkçemiz sade olacaktır, ama ondan da evvel, bilhassa tercüme gibi bir iddianın beraberinde getirdiği taahhüt mucibince, "doğru ve isabetli" olacak ve bu taahhüt, fer'i (ve doğruluğu su götürür) mülahazalara kurban edilıneyecektir." Mütercim takdimi önsözde belliydi zaten de, ben yine bir deneyeyim belki anlarım dedim ama yok, bitiremedim.

مع اختلاف الموضوع وتفرده وانصاف الكاتبه للتراث الاسلامي ، الا اني وجدته مبعثر ( لا اعرف ان هذا من الكاتبه أو المترجمه ) رغم ان الاستاذه لميس فايد معروفه ، وكان هناك اطناب وتكرار ولم تكن المواضيع مرتبه بشكل جيد .. اعجبني آخر جزئين وجدتهم مختلفين فعلا.، لم يكن سيئ ولكن عادي جدا لا انصح به الا للمهتمين فعلا بالمجال الصوفي كباحث ربما

It was a good read but sometimes dragged a bit. I enjoyed it when my mind was empty of clutter so it took me a while to finish. It helped me identify with the feminine in me. I wish I could have read the poetry in it's original language along with the translations.

This book, make me so proud as a woman. In here, we learn about woman and how woman in aspeck feminim and spiritually in Islam that equal with man. I recomended you to read this book

I thought this was a nice, uplifting book about women in the Islamic tradition, but it’s a brutal book about deranged levels of misogyny in Sufi writing and history. It took forever to read.

Jika semua wanita seperti yang telah kita sebutkan itu, maka kaum wanita akan lebih disukai daripada kaum pria. Sebab gender feminin bukanlah aib bagi matahari, dan gender maskulin pun bukan merupakan kehormatan bagi bulan.

i can see why critics say she's an islamic apologist...nonetheless, i loved it....as this is the last book Schimmel wrote, one can say that she cracks the door open for us as life's door closes on her...i think a more acute perception would be that Schimmel leaves the door open for us as she slips right through it onto the next world...this short book is an inspiration to enter a world of critical and theoretical thought...especially for anyone interested in islam, sufi poetry/philosophy, muslim cultures, esp south asian cultures, women/gender studies, etc.

great! great! tanpa pandangan yang apriori dalam mengkaji Islam terutama dalam hal Sufisme. Aku suka puisinya "...dan kau terus berjalan tercabik-cabik di tengah reruntuhan. dan seruling gembala mengabarkan padamu tentang kehidupan..."
