De 13e discipel

Rate this book

- Michail Gorbatsjov

*****I received this book as an advanced reader's copy from Harper One*****

The 13th Disciple is the story of a group of unlikely but lucky strangers who are brought together to join a Mystery School, founded by a young girl who was was given the truth by Jesus and thus became his 13th disciple. The group shares their stories and experiences as they embark on their journey to discover the truth for themselves. It has the makings of a really good story but there isn't enough character development nor depth for me. I also would have liked for there to be more in the book about the young girl disciple, her background, and much more of her future.

Those who want a light, inspirational read will probably like this book. Chopra has included as an afterword, a short history of Mystery Schools, and his advice on spirituality. That is not my 'thing', but I think people who are interested in New Age mysticism and spirituality will appreciate this inclusion.

Quite an interesting read,I especially enjoyed the afterword. It is difficult for me to put a review in words, as I believe I will be thinking about this story for a great length of time. I did enjoy, though....

"Ή τίποτε δεν είναι θαύμα ή όλα είναι θαύμα" όπως μας λέει ο συγγραφέας μέσα στο βιβλίο και τα θαύματα στις ζωές των ηρώων μας αρχίζουν να συμβαίνουν μέσα από τα πιο απλά πράγματα, όπως ένα ζευγάρι γυαλιά ηλίου ή ένα κέρμα. Ταξιδεύουν στο παρελθόν, γνωρίζουν την μαθήτρια και την διδασκαλία την οποία της δίδαξε ο Χριστός και προσπαθούν να την εντάξουν στην καθημερινότητα τους. Πόσο όμως εύκολο είναι αυτό; Πόσοι από αυτούς θα μείνουν ακόμα και μετά την εξαφάνιση της επικεφαλής τους; Ποια είναι η δέκατη τρίτη μαθήτρια τελικά και τι σχέση έχει με την Αποκάλυψη του Ιωάννη;

It was ok, but not great. I desperately wanted to like this book because I am a huge fan of DC's. In the end I only finished it because I have book OCD.
The afterword was more in keeping with his style and I enjoyed that the most. I sincerely felt that the final piece could have been a whole book rather, perhaps with the fiction in between, then it would have been less bothersome.
Little things bothered me, like how there was no natural flow or build up of emotions or actions, or how climaxes were never reached. At the moment I would say that DC needs to stick to spiritual guidance books, rather than fiction.

The story was ok, not great, a bit slow & drawn out & not compelling. I agree with the reviews that said that the afterword was more interesting than the book. There are too many better books for me to recommend this one.

The book is too "Deepak-ish" as a novel.
the non-fiction afterward though, was really good, and deserves a couple of extra stars alone.

It seemed like it was trying to be like the Alchemist or it was the second part of a story I didn't read. There were small bits that might have been interesting, but it just didn't reach me.

The story was okay but I was unable to grasp a deeper hidden take away from this story as I thought I would, and thought that it could have been made more interesting.

It was first captivating, then confusing but everything became clear at the last part of the book.

The story begins with a woman named Meg who suddenly had supernatural experiences which completely changed her life. She became one of the chosen people to experience the stigmata of Christ. Because of this, she met Lilth who is also a seeker of the chosen people who would fulfill the prophecy of the 13th disciple. To cut this short, they met 4 other people with different personalities and backgrounds and altogether, they began their search for the hidden message which the 13th disciple was trying to convey them.

The confusing part was the the small flashbacks they had when they time-traveled subconsciously back to the existence of the 13th disciple. I was not able to fully grasp the meaning behind the 13th disciple's past memories.

But I was grateful enough that the author had this short explanation at the end of the story about the meaning of the Light they were seeking. This made the story worth it.

I admired the concept of how Deepak was able to convey the spiritual message of finding one's Light in a heartfelt, mystical way. The different characters in the story opened up my eyes on the different realities we have in this life. It was Galen who touched my heart the most...

Thank you!

I like the message of this book, but getting there is another story. It is an interesting introduction to thinking about God differently via a spiritual journey with a few fictional and historical travelers. For some readers it be will be difficult to get past the unbelievable elements of the story, but if you can suspend your known reality and just go with it, it is useful.
My favorite quote, which I wrote down to reference later is this, "To meet God as a reality, you have to reach the zero point, where there is faith in nothing. At the zero point every false idea about God has been abandoned. You cry with all your heart, 'Show yourself as you really are. I'm finished with fakes. Either show yourself, or I am lost.'"
I am probably in the right place/space to be reading this book and can relate to this quote personally.

If you want to get the gist of it, read the Afterward first, or just read that. It explains his way of thinking and how he infused this way into his characters.
Light as awareness and presence is the medium for growth.
I've never read anything by Deepak Chopra before, and now I am interested in his other works.
I liked it and am in the right space to appreciate the message.

This story describes many spiritual experiences that people have and does it through the fictional events of a modern mystery school. While it connects to and discusses Christianity, I found the Christian storyline a bit contrived. If you are looking for confirmation of spiritual experiences, like prescient dreams, serendipitous connections, healing power, seeing the light in all matter, or finding love in the challenges of life, this book will give you some examples. I listened to Chopra narrate this story and found his reading quite distracting. However, the afterword that discusses spiritual paths, was intriguing. Chopra wrote this story to make a point and I think he succeeds at sharing his spiritual views through the characters' stories.

Deepak Chopra should never narrate audiobooks. His accent made this a difficult listen.
This book is written well and is a definite divergence from Chopra's spiritual writings.
The ending connects together Chopra's spiritual revelations with the characters in the book.
The story drags out at times and the characters need more development. The afterword is really what separates this book from standard spiritual fiction.

I don't know if religious mystery clubs are a real thing, but at least this story is something different. It's also well written. I have great esteem for Mr. Chopra in any walk of life. I think the main thing I took away was that spiritual gifts should not be ignored or buried but rather accepted as fact by those of us who have them, whether big or small. There are great mysteries in the World, and I have seen enough of them to know that Mankind does not and can never know everything.

I was definitely enlightened by this book. It reads as a novel but has some commentary at the end that focuses on some religious and spiritual ideals. The reading was timely for my as an Episcopalian in the time of Epiphany were there is a great focus on the light of Christ and being the light in the world.

The afterword was for me the most interesting part of the book. However I am not sure I totally agree with Deepak’s vision on relation between Christianity and Spirituality.
The main story of the book didnot catch me.

The 13th Disciple by Deepak Chopra Reading a mystery with a religious undertone was interesting. In some ways you knew the story but there was a new approach to it. I didn’t know there is a whole following of the 13th disciple. Good reading and thought provoking.

I had no idea what I was getting with this story. It held my interest. It was helpful to have the story and then the teach afterward.
I loved the description of Lilith, As she looked in the mirror, she thought, I'm a cross between a drag queen and the Easter parade.

Simplesmente não me parecia nada natural. Me identifiquei bastante com o Galen, lol.
