The tides run high in the small fishing village of Dorset, Maine, and Kohn Construction wants to build a tidal power generating station in Dorset Cove. The project is opposed by an environmental group, and the fishermen's association has asked one of its own, Tom Handy, to try and find out which side they should support. Kohn Construction has hired Tom's older brother, estranged from him for the past fifteen years, as its spokesman, and the clash of competing interests poses risks for the Kohns and their investors, for the members of the Town Council and their constituents, and for Tom and his family.

Tides by Philip J. Moss is a multi-layered story taking place in a Maine town where the proposal of constructing a tidal power generation facility divides people on personal, business and philosophical levels. Politics, industrial ambition and familial relationships are intertwined in a dynamic plot, pivoting on credible and distinctly human characters who are brought to life by Moss’ talent with dialogue.

Unearthed secrets and sabotage thread through this compelling story of protagonist Tom Handy and the tumultuous set of circumstances in which he finds himself. The book's skillfully-crafted plot concludes in a gratifying cadence that gives closure to the reader's questions while still leaving room for afterthought and reflection. I recommend this book. It is a bright and satisfying novel.
