Alibi Interrupted is the perfect blend of two tales of speculative fiction intricately woven into one masterpiece of suspense that not only entertains, but also causes you to reflect on how the decisions we make in life can profoundly affect the world around us and the people we love.
J.L. Pattison is the author of suspenseful contemporary speculative fiction for modern-day thought criminals.
J.L. Pattison won Libertopia’s “Best Libertarian Fiction” award two years in a row, and his uniquely clever tales with twist endings have garnered him favorable comparisons to Ray Bradbury, Rod Serling, and M. Night Shyamalan. His latest book, The Monster In The Well, is now available.
Alibi Interrupted begins with a man traveling back in time to prevent Lee Harvey Oswald from assassinating JFK. I won't say what happens, but the second half of the story focuses on a woman, back in the present day, who approaches this man with details about his mission. The encounter with the woman changes his choices about his time-travel mission. His decision has far-reaching implications for the two of them.
This story is a true page-turner. I was hooked right from the very beginning. It moves at a steady, purposeful clip that kept me totally locked in. There were no wasted moments, no filler. There was not-so-subtle nod to Rod Serling in the story, and the ending was very much straight out of a Twilight Zone episode. I highly recommend this story!
Alibi Interrupted is an excellent read! I actually had chills when I read the part in the book when Kohen saw the notice of his grandfather’s birth and said, “Welcome back grandpa. I missed you.” This book makes one eerily reflective on the presence of who they are as a person and acutely contemplative on the actions and counter actions that spring forth from each decision initiated.
Pattison will make you think, and maybe about things you're not used to thinking about. The best fiction reflects and critiques reality. Pattison hits that nail on the head. This is speculative fiction firing on all cylinders. Highly recommended!
J.L. has a flair for dramatic twists and plots that only come together at the very end. This second book could easily have been just as spell binding at 4 times the length. Mixing history with the element of time travel and the poignancy of family dynamics make this a must read. I was disappointed when I realized I was at the end of the novella because I wanted to keep reading. The interweaving of reality with something that could be right out of The Twilight Zone was highly intriguing. J.L., in a short novel, even managed to address a level of morality rarely, if ever, seen in a modern work of fiction. I highly recommend this book for reading. My only complaint is that it took way too long for his second book to make an appearance after his entrance into the skill craft of published authors.
Though this is a short story, that doesn't mean to say the quality is inferior to any full length novel. Actually, I'd argue the contrary: it's astounding to see so much excellence packed into such a short story. From the pristine writing to the flawless weaving together of countless lives, Alibi Interrupted succeeds in entertaining to the maximum, leaving myself - and many other readers alike, I imagine - speechless at the conclusion.
Everything was tied together so seamlessly, that I was completely satisfied with the story, a difficult feat for a book of only 11,000 words.
Time travel is not a genre I would normally read, but I thoroughly enjoyed Alibi Interrupted. J.L. Pattison has written a very interesting piece about travelling back in time to the assassination of J.F. Kennedy. The consequences of trying to alter history lead to unforeseen drama and tragedy. A thought-provoking tale.
