A Need To Breathe

Rate this book
True safety only comes at the cost of freedom
Lena’s city is changing. Her students fall to the gangs. Her husband is consumed by his job of creating and enforcing the rules that strangle her. If she fails in her plan to escape the city, it would mean prison, or worse. Staying means accepting a life constrained by rules and a slow decline into despair.
The world outside might be empty of people, but it’s full of hope and opportunity. If she can reach the farm, Lena will make a better life for herself and anyone who risks it all to join her.
If you enjoy thoughtful fiction about a changing world, you’ll love A Need To Breathe. A story of the journey from a world crumbling into decline to a life of hope.
Buy A Need To Breathe today and join Lena and her companions on their flight to a free life.

Perry Wilson is a Canadian author based in Vancouver, BC who has big ideas and an itch to tell stories. Having spent some time on university, a career, and life in general, she returned to writing three years ago and hasn't looked back since (well, maybe a little, but only while parallel parking).

She is a member of the Vancouver Independent Writers Group, and has self-published several novels. The second book of the Charity Deacon series, Greed, is due out in the fall 2012. (A French vacation pulls Charity and her best friend into the shady world of gun smugglers and missing people.)

She also writes the Quinn Larson Quests, which follows the adventures of a wizard named Quinn who must contend with volatile fae in the heart of Vancouver, and the Madeline Journeys, a fantasy series about a high-powered lawyer who finds herself trapped in a magical world. Her previous stand-alone novels are Breaking the Bonds and Closing the Circle.

I really had hoped to enjoy this book more than I did. When I had read the synopsis, I was excited as I LOVE dystopian novels.

However, when I started reading, it felt like the author had skipped the exposition entirely and started right into the rising action. This set the pace for the rest of the writing of the book. At times, the plot was choppy, and it seemed like the author had skipped over days, even weeks for the sake of getting through the plot, leaving the reader with more questions than answers. As a result, there were a few plot points, such as the problems of Julian and Abigail, as well as Mellow and Tik’s “relationship” that felt like they were unnecessary because of the lack of development put into them.

As far as the main character, Lena, goes, I admire her standing up to her husband and leaving not just the town, but her marriage, when it no longer aligned to her morals. That was about all I liked about her though. She constantly complained about not wanting to be the leader despite being the one to organize the journey, which in my opinion weakened the character. I can understand her not wanting to become the government she fled, but also, she needed to accept that she’d be seen as a leader by being the one to organize the Journey.

Aside from all of this, I found the “struggles” faced by the group to be more minor inconveniences than struggles. You may ask how being stalked by an unknown man, or finding their farm occupied at the end of the novel are minor inconveniences. These conflicts could have been fleshed out more if the author had only picked one or two for the group to face rather than small, non-fleshed out ones. Additionally, the group seemed to face the conflicts with fairly little struggle which didn’t allow for me to engage as a reader. I want to see the characters put up an honest fight and struggle when facing external conflicts, but these conflicts were solved relatively easily for the scale of the problem they presented.

I think with more work, a rewrite of this n book could be something more enjoyable, but as it stands, I would give this book two out of five stars.

AN EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE!!!
An awe inspiring read of survival. With a world that's torn apart a group of people from various backgrounds pull together. What they try to accomplish is as remarkable as they are. You'll be pulled in and held spellbound as you follow the progress and struggle. Perry did an amazing job bringing this story alive. I would recommend this read to anyone who loves sci-fi. However, it truly makes one think about future actios.
