Arthur Henry "Art" Young was an American cartoonist and writer. Is famous for his socialist cartoons, especially those drawn for the left wing political magazine The Masses between 1911 and 1917.
In this early work of cartoonist Art Young we can spot some of the growing socialist sentiments of late 19th Century American artists and writers.
Following in Dante Alighieri's footsteps, Young cast various people of his day into an ironic hell. Lawyers (their section is full to overflowing), police officers, politicians, editors, con-men, rich snobs, insincere preachers, boring storytellers and others who managed somehow to offend Young got their just desserts.
Even political caricaturists (like Young himself) had their special punishment. They were physically pulled and twisted to resemble their own grotesque caricatures.
Through all of hell, through all of his words and illustrations, Young maintained his trademark good humor.
