My family seems to be perfect from the outside looking in. We have the big house, the money for things, the million-dollar-smiles… but nothing is ever as it seems. We’re plastic. We’re fake. So fake, in fact, that we hide the little things about us, we hide everything about us, to be more specific. My dad does things he isn’t supposed to, and my mom is taking it hard. My brother has a full ride to any college of his choice, and he’s blowing it away like it’s nothing at all. So what would happen if someone found out about us? If they saw through our little charade? If they looked past the kitchen curtains that hide every conversation my parents have with each other? What if we were exposed for who we really are, instead of who everyone thinks we are? Started reading this one as I was getting ready for the work day. What was supposed to be just a few pages read turned into many. I could not put this book down. It resonated with me because of the realness of it. So many times we as human beings try to pretend that everything is okay instead of confronting our issues and dealing with them head on. We may pretend that we don't know that so and so has an issue with dependency on alcohol or drugs. And sometimes the avoidance is due to fear - the fear of "what happens next" after confronting the issue(s) and any consequences that may be involved. Deep down inside we may already know what's going to happen next. What you do in the darkness will always come to the light. A secret is not really a secret. There's a Higher Power that is watching over you who is very well aware of your secrets and sees all. This is a must read page turner. It's also sad and powerful with a meaning and purpose. I recommend this book to anyone.
I dived into this book without listening to the song, but my reading engagement was high throughout the story. The twist at the end hits hard and is unexpected.
The only bad thing about this book was that it was not edited. You'll be able to read through it fine, but the errors are noticeable. I hope K. Weikel revisits this book in the future and fixes it.
Dollhouse was a fun story to read. It was predictable because it was based off the song by Melanie Martinez, but the way it was written and projected made it very interesting. I enjoyed it very much, and my only issue was the ending. Why did it have to end in such a way?
I wish this was longer. The characters are amazing and the concept of a "valley girl" hating her "Barbie doll" lifestyle and wanting to be a normal, "real" family.
