Their wolves are howling at the moon. Their human halves are on different planets.
Lone wolf Shaun Steven’s automatic response to the words “happily ever after”? Kill me now. Yet with all his friends settling down he’s begun to think there may actually be something to this love-and-roses crap.
One thing’s for sure: his dream mate will have to out-cuss, out-spit and out-hike him. So he never expected the one to push his forever button would be a blue-blooded Southern debutante with a voice as dark and velvety as her skin.
When Gemmita Jacobs steps off the plane in Whitehorse, Yukon, it’s about more than her research project. It’s her declaration of independence from an overprotected upbringing. Except there’s something in the air she can’t quite define—something that unexpectedly rouses her mating instincts.
Moments after their eyes lock, the deed is done—and done thoroughly. When the pheromone dust settles, though, all the reasons they don’t belong together become painfully clear.
It’s enough to make a wolf learn a whole new set of cuss words…
Warning: Two strong wolves getting exactly what they deserve. Includes wilderness nookie, shifters being naughty in public places, the Midnight Sun as a canopy for seduction and grizzly shifters on the loose. Oh, and don’t forget the sarcasm.

It took me a couple of days to get through and once I finished...I wasn't searching for the next book.
It is a cute story...there are many packs throughout and Gem who is the daughter of the Alpha of the South Pack left the South to complete a project in the North.
While she is in the North she meets her mate...Shaun!!
Shaun is the beta type who has really found his anchor. He loves the North, he loves his job, he loves his alpha...but something is missing. While drunk...he spots his mate and they spend one hot night together. The next day he finds that he is her guide through the North for her project.
They have obstacles to overcome:
1. Will they live in the North or South 2. Is she giving up her controlling father for a controlling mate?? 3. There is a kidnapping.
I guess I just wanted more!! Everything little obstacle lasted a few seconds and then it was immediately resolved...I guess I was missing the angst.
Don't care enough about what's gonna happen to the MCs to continue reading this. I was excited to find a book that incorporated two of my favorite genres; interracial romance and PNR, but this book was just plain boring. I can read 600 page books in less then two days and its taken me that long to get thru 70% of a 150 page book!
After trying several different VA books over the years, thinking maybe outside factors were contributing to my feelings towards the books, I've come to the decision that I'm just not Arend's target audience. I won't be reading any more by her. Not that her work is bad, on the contrary, it is leagues better than some I've read. Her books just don't do anything for me.
First shifter book that I have ever read where the wolf was more like a sheep. Heroine did something when she arrived in the bar, used some sort of mystical power, but whatever she did was never explored nor explained. I expected it to be some sort of power, but nada, it was never mentioned again. Overall a fairly OK read. A sentence or two that made no sense.
Shaun has always been a lone wolf. Preferring not to belong to any one pack, he has always been happy to sit on the sidelines. That is, until all his pals start to mate and settle down. Now he finds himself drunk off his arse in the local Alpha Evan’s office, wishing for thing’s he never thought he would want. Gem is visiting the local area when she is frog-marched to Evan’s office for breaching pack protocol. She is supposed to announce her presence to the local pack, but the inexperienced young wolf doesn’t know better. This ecological field trip is her first steps into independence, but as soon as she step’s foot into Evan’s office, something triggers the mating instinct. At first she thinks its Evan himself, but further investigations (which really did amuse me) show that it’s not the pack Alpha that is destined to be her mate. A rather amused Evan realises that the only other person who has been in his office is Shaun, but realises that the mismatched couple should probably wait until Shaun gets sober to meet. However, when a drunken Shaun tracks her down to her hotel room later in the evening, they can’t resist their urges and jump straight into the sack. Unfortunately, Shaun was so drunk that the next morning he doesn’t actually remember them having sex (this is not something you tell your mate!) Shaun soon realises that mating when drunk wasn’t the best plan, as there seems to be too many differences between the pair. Gem is a sick of being overprotected (which Shaun wants to do) and is completely set on returning to the South. Shaun has always lived on the Yukon and can’t stand the thought of leaving to move towards her. In his eyes she is his mate, she should move to him and let him take care of her. With both wolves so set in their ways and resistant to compromise, will the mating hormones alone be enough to make this fledgling relationship work?
I was so excited when I heard that there was a new wolfie book coming and this didn’t disappoint! I loved the whole thing and read it from cover to cover in one sitting. Shaun may seem like a chauvinist from the paragraph above, but really, he is just clueless. When we meet him, he is bored and lonely. He wants a mate, but doesn’t hold out much hope of ever getting one. The scene in Evans office when he gets drunk on moonshine is the funniest scene in the book and I warmed to him immediately. When he meets Gem, he can’t abide the thought of losing her because of stupid differences. He is a little cave man in his ways towards her, but I honestly don’t think that he knows any better. After he realises that she will not be the one bending for him, he starts to bend for her. He starts to woo her and tries to get her to love him. Underneath it all, he still has the same protective instincts as any other dominant wolf, and occasionally that does slip out, but he really does try to make it work.
Gem was so naive that, at times, she irritated me. She turns up in the Yukon trying to free herself from her family bonds and become an independent woman. Problem was, she was so inexperienced with the ways outside her pack I couldn’t see how this was going to happen easily. She also was quite intolerant of other people. I couldn’t see anything in her future but a return to her estate. After she hooked up with Shaun, I hoped she would become something more. I admired that she stood up for herself against Shaun’s over bearing nature; I could tell that neither of them would be happy if she proved to be weak. However, I felt that, at first, she was too unwilling to bend and that Shaun was making all of the sacrifices. Although she eventually began to bend slightly for him, I still felt that she was the more selfish one in the relationship. She did no bending that would not ultimately help her in some way. I did, however, grow to love their relationship when they got into some trouble in the bush. The relationship building that went on in this time was immense and I started to will for their HEA. I loved Shaun from the moment he fell off his chair in Evan’s office but I didn’t start to love Gem until their time in the bush. She let go of her prejudices about Shaun and the North and then I actually started to believe she was good enough for the lonely wolf. Oh and the smexy times are, as per usual, hot and steamy. I don’t think I’ve read a Vivian Arend book where I haven’t had a hot flush or two whilst reading it
There are side stories, but I won’t spoil any of them. I will say I love Evan; his struggles with the females of the pack trying to entice him were hilarious and the solution to his woes led to some other brilliant moments in the story.
Overall a lovely story of a misunderstood bad-boy (wolf), from the wrong side of the tracks, who meets an overprotected rich girl (wolf) and falls in love. Steamy and sweet complete with a whole host of colourful side characters and enough sub-plots to get your teeth into. A fab read!
Shaun is tired of seeing his friends finding their mates and is feeling a bit of loneliness when it comes to himself. He knows that he may not be the ideal mate for some but what he didn't expect is to have his mate be a southern debutante. Shaun has a dirty mouth and Gemmita is pure class. She is in Whitehorse, Yukon to research caribou but plans to leave when it is done, can Shaun and Gem find a reason to stay together other than being mates?
This was good but I found myself more intrigued with Evan and Caroline. Checking out the next book.
I am under the impression that this is a spin-off series of the Granite Lake Wolves series, however it felt like a continuation. Which is a great thing because I do love the feel of this series and the personalities and characters are always entertaining. But now we are dealing with a different pack.
Shaun was feeling a bit down, what with everyone finding their mates and being happy, that he gets plastered at the bar and his Alpha, Evan, has to take him to the local motel he owns to sleep it off. At the same time, Gem happens to stroll into town because she is going on a wildlife expedition for her research. Who she happens to find? Shaun. Who might he be? Yep. Her Mate. He is also the pilot taking her on her expedition which puts them in close proximity for a few days.
This was a very cute story. Shaun was sexy and funny, laid back but possessive at the same time. Smart enough to give her space when she needed it. She's from Georgia, where werewolves are pretty much shot on sight, has lived a sheltered and pampered life, and ohhh she's an heiress. The dynamics of their relationship worked well because she is still a very down to earth girl, low maintenance and would fit in with the pack life of the Takhini wolves.
Even though they jump quickly in bed, as I've come to expect with these books when they find their mates, the relationship building was slow and progressed well throughout the book, as they went through obstacles and some danger together.
The side story with Caroline, a human, and the Alpha, Evan, was very interesting and I'm dying to read more about them as well.
Not bad, and good enough to still my hunger for shifter romance for a bit. I prefer normal relationship over the whole fated mate business, but I liked how it played out here. Both had this preconception of how their relationship would work, and when it turned out that was exactly the opposite of each other, shit hit the fan.
I did feel like Shaun was the one doing all the work, while Gem stayed with her Southern Belle habits for a long time. Not her spoiled princess things, but more her idea of how people are supposed to behave. I just didn't feel like she was doing an effort to understand Shaun and please him as he was doing for her.
The worldbuilding was ok, but I've got a hunch that it's been established mostly in the related Granite Lake Wolves series, because it was a tad on the meager side.
So I think it could go either way in the next book. We either get more packdynamics and relationships and I'll be a very happy camper. Or we'll get more of the same without really getting into the shifter lore, and I'll loose interest.
Still, I liked it enough that I want to give the second book a chance, and that's been a while with a new to me author on the shifter front.
I tried to listen to this one, but I really wasn't enjoying the narration. I started to grit my teeth while listening so that's a good sign that I need to let this one go. :( The story was fine but I just couldn't keep going when the narrator's voice was so grating for me. I'll give this one a reread at some point.
Oh yeah. Fun tale with interesting glimpses of the north. (Though I wonder about the absence of mosquitoes. I've been to the land of the midnight sun (in my case, Lapland), and the freakin' buzzers are everywhere. In swarms!) Also, I have a feeling I'm going to like this even more when I reread it.
Threw this one on the dnf pile - just got bored. Everyone was so busy THINKING (invariably at odds with the other character) instead of doing that this book felt a little juvenile, and terribly obvious in what was going/had to happen next.
I’m sooooo confused as to why this doesn’t at least have 3.8 stars??? I really enjoyed this light read and romance novel based around the love story of two completely different shifters. Gem and Shaun were SOOOOOOO cute and goopy at times but they just worked so well together. It was a quick read and I found myself PRAYING the author would continue their saga but I found out the other books have nothing to do with Gem and Shaun?? I’m devastated, I can see SOOO much more happening for them, but I won’t penalize the author for that in terms of stars; I do think she should continue the story pretty please 🙏 . If you’re reading this pleaseeee continue!
Gem is a researcher from the south and Shaun is a pilot and guide. What could go wrong?
Gem comes from money and is doing a research paper on Northern caribou. Shaun is the pilot hired to take her where she needs to be. He thinks she is unprepared for being out in the wild. She is trying to get away from overprotective men and spread her wings and fly. But when it turns out they are mates, how deep of a hole will Shaun dig for himself and will he be able to get out? Will she prove she is more prepared than he thought? What will happen when they are kidnapped and what will her dad think of them being mates?
Definitely read this a while ago and forgot to review it. It wasn’t bad- just a pretty run-of-the-mill werewolf romance. The cute Alaska small-town setting was nice, if my memory serves me. But the plot was pretty silly, to no one’s surprise. Generally okay, though.
I have been reading Vivian Arend’s books for a while now and I loved her Granite Lake Wolves Series as well as her Forces of Nature Series and when I found out that she was writing a spin-off series from her Wolf series I was so excited!
Black Gold features Shaun who we first met in the Granite Lake Wolves Series but never really had a chance to know much about him until now.
Shaun has been all about the fun for the longest time, but lately he has been feeling quite lonely, specially having to witness all his friend finding their True Mates, while he is still alone.
Gem is a wolf from the south and from a very rich family. She is tired of living so overprotected and takes a chance to finish her graduate studies by doing research in the cold far north. Her first night in town changes everything when she meets Shaun in a very unlikely way and discovers he is her True Mate and they are meant to be together forever.
I really enjoyed Black Gold, specially how Viv played with a romance’s timeline, by getting the main couple together early on by making them True Mates and then having them try to figure out how they can make it work, actually get to know each other for real and finally fall in love, or not.
I also loved the secondary storyline with the pack’s Alpha and his secretary. It made me wish that the next book in the series is about them =)
Black Gold was an awesome sexy read and the only small complaint I have is that I wish there was maybe a bit more action? However, the book was quite fast-paced and I found myself going through it in one sitting.
I definitely recommend Black Gold to all my fellow PNR lovers out there, specially if you like it HOT! Can’t wait for the next installment!
Another great wolf series from Vivian Arend!!! Black Gold: Takhini Wolves, Book 1 is a great start to a new series. The series maybe new, but the characters aren’t all new. We are in a new Pack though. This book centers around Shaun the helicopter pilot from the Granite Lake series. If you remember he got in a tad bit of trouble for flying TJ and Pam out and not sticking around to tell anyone where they were.
Shaun is feeling restless, and he doesn’t know why. His Alpha thinks he needs a purpose to his life and to basically grow up. Little does he know his next charter has the reasons for him to do both of those things. Gemmita has come to the north from Georgia, and she is in for a tad bit of culture shock. She grew up on a family compound surrounded by only shifters, and only being allowed to shift on special occasions due to a law that allowed humans to shoot a wolf on site without consequences. Last thing she expects is to meet her mate Now that she has how do they solve the problem of where to live?? Will either of them be willing to move?
I LOVED this book!! I love that Gem makes Shaun work for her love. She doesn’t just roll over because he is her mate. She is a really strong wolf in her on right. There are a couple scenes that had me laughing out loud, because the harder Shaun tries the more he tends to get her fur up. Hehehe!! I know you guys will love this one as much as I did!!
This is the first book in Vivian Arend’s new wolf series staring Shaun who we met before as a helicopter pilot for the Granite Lake Wolves. He is still just living life with no real goals but one night while with his alpha, Evan getting drunk he reveals he wants a mate. The way he meets his mate is pretty hilarious. The Takhini wolves all act like a bunch of rowdy frat boys and need some women to whip them into shape.
His mate, Gem, is a pampered princess from the south. Yes, a southern belle wolf, who would have thought. She wants to leave her very safe, comfortable rich life for a chance to be independent. She comes to the North as part of a research project. Gem is a very innocent wolf but not stupid. She knows this will be like nothing she has ever done, completely out of her comfort zone but she is very brave to do it.
Staun and Gem come from very different lives so they need to learn each other before they mark each other. Yes, they are mates but they still have a choice on whether to be together, sort of. I liked how they make mistakes with one another but learn from them.
However, my favorite couple/work relationship is Evan the alpha and Caroline, a human who works in the hotel. Caroline has enough of the female wolves causing trouble in the town trying to get Evan’s attention that she usually has to clean up. Her solution: move in and sleep with the very sexy Evan. She is one smart cookie.
Hellllo, sexy shifters! I am a huge fan of insta-love when reading shapeshifter books. I just love when that mating instinct kicks in and the two parties can't get enough of one another. But what happens when the two shifters in question are polar opposites? Like, what if one's a rough and ready pilot who's just as happy camping out in the wilderness as bunking down in a room with a cot and the other is a pampered, sheltered lady who's trying to spread her wings and find herself? Shenanigans, people. SHENANIGANS!
I loved that Shaun went out of his way to try to tone himself down for Gem. He *cough*attempts*cough* to cut down on the swearing. He tries to remember to pull out her chair and open doors for her. All in the name of trying to get her to fall in love with both him and the land so that she won't hightail it back to Georgia as soon as her research is complete.
Great pack dynamics (I kinda love Evan, I can't lie about that), enthusiastic bedroom antics, and two vastly different individuals trying to make things work made this a fun FUN book. Also, the cover is pretty RAWR!
Shaun is used to time on his own, with his own business and flying clients over Alaska, when he crosses paths with a gorgeous shifter from a sheltered life down south. Gemmita thought she was doing her research project and then return back home, she never expected to find her own mate in the middle of nowhere, Whitehorse. When Shaun turns out to be her guide through the wilderness, she jumps head first into adventure. Can they make a go of it, two opposites with almost nothing in common? Shifters, smutty fluff and action in a great combo, can´t wait to hear more from this Shifter pack. Listened to the audio version, and the narrator was great as well.
Wolf-shifter, Gemmita came from the South. Gemmita came from a wealthy, high-class lifestyle where the shifters barely shifted, she had never seen a human up close and she got her college degree on her family estate. Sean is introduced in the book as a participant in a bar fight. While he owns his own airline charter company, he is wild, irresponsible, and hasn't found anything or anyone to change that. His picture of a mate is anything but the refined Gemmita. Unlike other books, even though they initially give in to the mating frenzy, they quickly realize that they both have to make some serious concessions for each other or they won't make it.
I have to be honest. This is Vivian's newest series and while I love her werewolf books usual, I found this one terribly boring. Nothing really amazing happened in it and I felt myself yawning and drifting to sleep. In fact I was so bored, I had to stop reading it and clean my house for a while, so I would wake up more. The heroines character, Gem, is pretty decent. I love the whole southern belle thing and that was something new that I hadn't read in other books. However I just couldn't get past the fact this novel was putting me to sleep. Sorry Viv, it just wasn't good enough for me.
When your from the south things up north can be beautiful and daunting, but for Gem it is a chance in a lifetime to spread her wings and be on her own. Or so she thought; until the first night in Whitehorse she finds her mate. Did she escape her overprotective father just to trade him for an overprotective mate? Find out as she travels from Whitehorse to Dawson to Chicken and beyond to finish the project she started.
I thought the book was good but a little slow to get started. Stick with it and you'll be surprised at how fast it picks up and moves.
It was a cute story, it's one I've read so many times but with different characters and slightly different plot lines. It served as a great distraction after some heavier reading though. It's a cute little paranormal romance, my only criticisms are the sex scenes seem a bit excessive and the language is at times unrealistic. Like, who calls their professor "the prof." Aside from that, I enjoyed the multicultural element to it and thought it was an okay read.
This was a fun adventure and well written. There was romance, action, conflict, but too much sex for me. The characters are likable and the setting is enjoyable. Still, the whole shifter genre and romance in general is usually so predictable. Every time, it's lonely X meets lonely Y who both overcome misunderstandings and differing attitudes to live happily ever after. I guess not every book can be written by Patricia Briggs, and you have to read something while you're waiting.
Oh, my! Great story. The characters have lots of charm and have some hilarious moments, as well as having some serious situations come up. I've laughed and cried with them. Great ending. Keep them coming, Vivian
I enjoyed this book. Shaun was funny and kept me entertained. At times I felt like there were to many side plots but it was understandable being that it was the first book to a series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this shape shifter paranormal action packed romance. The characters were amazing and extremely sexual. The setting was beautiful. I can't wait to read more about these characters.
Meh, nothing about this book made me want to continue the series. There were to many things that irritated me. Shaun was a manipulative asshole most of the book. Gem was supposed to be sheltered but came off a kind of stupid. Even the side characters didn't hold my interest for very long.
