About the author

Stephen Paul Lambert Mary Elizabeth (Paul) van Loon (Geleen, April 17, 1955) is a Dutch children's author and singer of self-described 'children's book band' Paul van Loon & Andere Snuiters. The main body of his work consists of horror stories aimed at younger audiences. An avid reader of 'adult' horror authors as H.P. Lovecraft even when he was young, he felt there was not enough in the genre aimed at children. His most well-known works are the series 'Dolfje Weerwolfje' (Dolfje the Werewolf) and 'De Griezelbus' (The Horrorbus). Van Loon has been writing for over 25 years and has written over 100 books. His work has been the basis for 3 films and 2 television series.
His books are not only sold in the Dutch-speaking Netherlands and Belgium, but are also available in other countries including Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden, Spain and Japan.

Incredible introduction to the spooky/horror literature genre for children. Goes over different types of myths (ghosts, vampires, zombies) without being inappropriate or overly gruesome. Summerizes some horror classics like Dracula or Frankenstein. The Illustrations are very unique and funny and add greatly to the book. Loved it as a kid, would recommend as a great gift to any child interested in monsters, ghosts etc. <3

Un libro muy práctico y útil para iniciar a los pequeños y a los no tan pequeños en el género del terror. Contiene mucha información relevante acerca de los primeros precursores del género (Drácula, Frankenstein, etc) y a las diferentes clasificaciones de los mismos. Al final de esta guía podemos encontrar mucha información útil sobre libros y películas (para niños y adultos) recomendadas.

Maravillosa forma de introducir a las infancias al mundo del terror literario y cinematográfico. Divertido y bien documentado... Aunque el capítulo de recomendaciones literarias terroríficas en español se siente incompleto: no voltean a ver a Latinoamérica, donde contamos con un profuso catálogo de terror para las infancias y juventudes.

"The Horror Handbook" is a book detailing specific facts about mummy's, werewolves, vampires and more terrifying creatures. The book is very factual and details the origins, stereotypes, conspiracies and adaptations of horror creatures.

Despite its vast information I felt their were many limitations. I feel it does become monotonous and like reading a academic text book despite there being a few jokes. Also, there is large unwanted reference section at the end regarding horror literacy and filmography.

Overall, I feel the book does not appeal to its target market of age 9-11. There are also reports of witchcraft cases which involved a homicide. I feel this information is irrelevant to the age range and is likely to induce fear then provide an interesting read.

Un verdadero manual del terror, que explora desde una detallada descripción de los monstruos más icónicos de la historia de la literatura, pasado por una selección de películas y libros de terror que no puedes evitar si este género es lo tuyo hasta llegar a una preciosa selección de libros recomendados para todas las edades que pueden llegar a helarte la sangre.
Complementa la lectura unas muy amigables ilustraciones que encajan perfectas.
Si puedo agregar algo negativo es que hay un libro en el que el libro se pone denso en cuanto a párrafos demasiados extensos que bien pidieron ser divididos. Así mismo la falta de ilustraciones casi al final hace que se sienta extraña la lectura, y por último algunas de las recomendaciones en libros de terror, no son en realidad terror sino fantasía y a mí me hicieron falta algunos clásicos del terror juvenil, aunque como dice el mismo autor tú debes hacer tu propia lista y compartirla con tus amigos.

Duerman bien y que no tengan pesadillas y si algún monstruo te vista esta noche, estarás preparado con este manual para combatirlos o unirte a ellos.

Lo encontré de casualidad y me he divertido mucho. ES un libro infantil pero quería cambiar de tema.
En este libro nos explora todas las criaturas espeluznantes de la tierra, como son los vampiros, los fantasmas, los hombres lobo.....
Nos explica su origen, sus hábitos, como luchar contra ellos, cómo reconocerlos,,,, El autor con cada criatura nos recomienda películas para que disfrutemos del terror.
Me ha parecido divertido, ya que es un libro infantil , incluiria muchas más imágenes, por no cansarlo con párrafos super extensos. Lo he leído enseguida y también incluye chistes.

Ma ei ole muidugi sihtgrupp, lapsena oleksin seda raamatut ilmselt korduvalt üle lugenud ja rohkem hinnanud. Praegu paraku jäi kesiseks. Autor teeb ka teisi kuulsaid teoseid kirjeldades mitu sisulist viga, mis on selle "käsiraamatu" juures, mis peaks lastele õuduskirjandust jms tutvustama, eriliselt andestamatu.

Una recopilación de las criaturas de terror más famosas, brujas, fantasmas, zombies etc.
Se explica cada una como si fuesen reales y la manera de acabar con ellas aportando datos curiosos y poniendo como ejemplo libros y películas, está entretenido yo creo que a niños de a partir de 8/9 años les puede gustar.

Kena sissejuhatus õudukate juurde. Eriti meeldisid viimased peatükid, kus soovitati klassikalist õuduskirjandust ja -filme. Enim mõjus aga täitsa viimane peatükk, millega lõpetasin teose samal kellaajal, mis autorgi märkinud oli, aga 31. oktoobril. ;)

Este libro me encantó. Aunque está dirigido al público juvenil, su estilo es ágil, simpático y cargado de un humor inteligente. Además, incluye muchas referencias a películas, leyendas y libros que enriquecen la lectura, acompañado de unos dibujos geniales. Sin duda, es una obra muy recomendable para los amantes del género.

I read this book when I was little and it did disappoint me a little. I had expected a series of short stories like in the Horror Bus series but this was not it. It is exactly what the title says: a textbook about monsters and scary creatures. Having at that point already finished half of all the hooror stories in the library (that were age appropriate) I already knew mos of what there was to know about vampires, werewolves and the like. Still I suppose there are people out there who enjoy reading about monsters as if they were real and the succes of the Harry Potter school books (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them --> which I by the way have not yet read precisely because I dislike fake textbooks) goes to show just that.

The Horror Handbooks presents itself as a guide for monster hunters. It is an excellent introduction for younger readers to the horror genre, describing to them all the classic monsters : vampires, werewolves, but also witches, mummys, bigfoots and many more. It also gives very pertinent books and movies suggestion.

This book is very important to me.

I read it for the first time when I was 7 or 8, and it was one of the books which ignite my interest for the horror genre. It was like a Bible to me, and I read it again and again and again. When I met my best friends years later, I learnt she also had it by her bedside for years. The Horror Handbook will always have a special place in my heart.

Accompagnato da illustrazioni simpatiche, L'enciclopedia dei mostri è sicuramente una lettura fuori dall'ordinario, ma curiosa e scorrevole che ho fatto molto volentieri e che consiglio a grandi e piccoli che vogliano scoprire di più sui loro mostri preferiti.

This brings back memories. I think I have read this book something around 5 times.

Everything you ever wanted to know about every kind of vampire (there are ALOT of different types) is in this book. Every vampire lover or hunter should have this book handy.
