This early reader in verse entertains with silly dogs getting up to some Halloween hijinks.
The crazy dogs from Joan Holub’s Step 2 reader Shampoodle are back and as spirited as ever! There’s a puppy party in the backyard, but the scaredy-dogs skedaddle when "ghosts" and "ghouls" begin to arrive. What should these pups do? Don costumes and join the Halloween parade!
Step 2 Readers use basic vocabulary and short sentences to tell simple stories. For children who recognize familiar words and can sound out new words with help.

It's Hallowe'en and this collection of pooches is ready to celebrate. One in particular, Vampoodle, thinks that he can host an excellent canine party. Things are going well until a number of monsters and zombies begin heading in their directions. Dogs go scurrying and clothes go flying, with a number of pooches refusing to come out. Funny enough, it's the owners, and they have some Hallowe'en fun for their pets, just you wait. Neo led the reading of this story and while it is out of season, it did help hone his reading and rhyming capabilities. He likes the piece and hopes we can find more Vampoodle books, or at least something along those lines.
Cute Halloween and dog book, great for holding kids' attention. Trick or treat, dog parade, lots of action, not scary. Great art, Tim Bowers must have dogs because he is great at drawing and painting them!
This is a fun little book for kittens (and puppies too of course) who are afraid of Halloween. Read this with your little ones who are afraid of costumed kids and loud noises. The bright and cheerful tone of the text and pictures will quickly convince scaredy-kittens that Halloween is all about fun. For those kittens overwhelmed by the pressure of choosing a creative costume, this little story will show them that cute costumes can be quickly improvised from the laundry basket. Be warned that bolder kittens who are looking for a spooky, blood-chilling story about a vampire-poodle will likely be disappointed by the tameness of this story.
I found this book at the Scholastic Warehouse sale, and I am not going to lie, I totally did a happy dance. I have been waiting to get this book to give to my daughter (who loves Halloween AND dogs) to keep for her own little library. This book is an easy read with great sight words on every page. Loved! Too cute! *And let's just talk about that cover and all other illustrations....goodness....it is so darn cute!
Rather a cute little book. A group of dogs are having a fun get together until what appears to be a group of monsters appears. However all turns out well. This is a book for young readers after all. Not sure why the main character is called Vampoodle unless it is the teeth. If you have young children or grandchildren this book might be just right for them.
This book was super cute and easy to read. It's made to teach how to read but even my three year old caught on to the improper sentences. It reads like a train of thought; words or phrases to describe something without real structure.
“I wish we had 100 stars! 💯 Literally because vampoodle looks like a toilet sponge! The funniest part was the dog with the underwear! When he had them on as a hat too!” - Lucas
