A rescue home--you need to be rescued from? Joey's life is about to change for the second time in eleven years, as he and his sisters go into action to protect their mother from an out of control stepdad. A new friend comes to their aid, taking them to a secret community for abused women, hidden behind a massive amusement park and inside the gorges of Berryhill mountain. Berryhill amusement park has the only entrance, with a rollercoaster ride that dislodges to enter the paradise community owned by billionaire Charles Berryhill. Joey soon learns the perfect community has its own secrets when he discovers Mattie hiding inside the park. Lots of caveats to this story including the mandate no boys are allowed inside the Berryhill home (Joey's long dark Choctaw hair is pulled up into a ponytail so he can enter with his mother and three sisters). Danger lurks for Joey's family after they hide Mattie from a whole park search. Joey ventures out on his own to investigate, and sees more than he bargained for and those in charge of the home are involved. He must find a way out through the mountains backside--of this one way in, no way out home--to bring back help for Mattie's family. Authors note: This book deals with the social issue of violence in the home, in a delicate way. Offering hope and proof you can go on to make a new life. I give a personal note in the final paragraph, of my own life and how my mother, made the same smart decision as Joey's mother. She packed us up and moved us away to our own fairy tale community where we started a new life.
I loved this story. The brave and smart Joey and Mattie had me rooting for them until the very end. The imagination of this author with the whole hidden village inside an amusement park was incredible. Can't wait to read more books from this author.
