AnnaLisa is the youngest of four children and the only daughter, born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After graduating high school, she moved to Charlotte, NC with her parents. This turned out to be a blessing since it was just a few short years later that she met her husband in the Film Actor's Studio of Charlotte. As she studied acting at the Studio, AnnaLisa was in several films and made-for-TV movies, as well as performed in local theater in both dramatic and musical roles. At one time, it was AnnaLisa's dream to be a professional singer.

AnnaLisa completed her undergraduate degree in Human Services at Wingate University and her Master's degree in Counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. During her thirteen years in the Human Services field, AnnaLisa worked with children in group homes and foster care, and spent two years in private practice counseling individuals, families, and couples.

When her father was in a near fatal car accident in 2010, AnnaLisa's best coping skill turned out to be writing. Five months after the accident, when all the what ifs would not go away, AnnaLisa started writing Layla Weston's story in The Lake. She had no idea what she was going to do with the story. In fact, she wrote sixty-four pages before she told her husband what she was doing. By then it was clear that Layla had a long story to tell and there were multiple books on the horizon.

In 2013, after all three YA novels in The Lake Trilogy were written and she had let them sit long enough, AnnaLisa took matters into her own hands and self-published the titles within just a few months of each other. Received well by readers young and not-so-young alike, The Lake Trilogy has enjoyed breakout success, selling close to half-million copies the first year.

AnnaLisa's publicist is Rick Miles of Red Coat PR, and she is represented by Italia Gandolfo of GH Literary. AnnaLisa has been married to her super awesome husband Donavan since 2001 and lives in Matthews, NC with their two ridiculously beautiful children.

**** 4.5 "Escaping Hell" Stars ****

 photo 99_zpsaqioahnu.jpg

Caroline's momma always told her to be brave and it would take every ounce of her being to stay brave for 99 days of abusive captivity.

Caroline's day started off as any other day, working on her family farm and loving her simple life. Until her life is snatched out from her grasp in broad daylight. Caroline is take away from everything she knows and loves and tossed into a house of horrors. Raped and beaten repeatedly for the next 99 days, Caroline fights for survival and hopeful release. Only to realize her captor has no plans of releasing her. She is his toy and a gift to his mentally challenged brother. A gift that keeps on giving or in this case a gift that keeps getting raped to fulfill the sick side of her captor Mud.

As her captivity drags on, she befriends Owen, Mud's "slow" brother. When Caroline learns about the life Owen has been living, her escape is even more imperative. Saving herself also means she could save the life of Owen, who has never had a life except for the one his brother has created for him. You will absolutely love in love with Owen!!

THIS BOOK IS A HEARTBREAKER!! Not just with the horrible abuse and captivity Caroline endures, but the twisting of Owen's life into this story, brings about a new a form of sympathy by the captive. I loved every page of this one!! Fabulous writing Miss Grant!!

Writing: ★★★
Story: ★★★
Characters: ★★★

Overall rating: 3.0

I'm used to reading dark and taboo, love dark non-con stories, I hunt them down and spend a lot of my time reading them. This book however, even though it's told around a kidnapping, non-con, rape, it's not what I would call "dark", although it tries hard to be.

Caroline is kidnapped from her hometown by "Mud", she wakes up in a small dirty room. The only thing she wants is out of there, and to go home to her mom, who has terminal cancer, her dad, and her cousin Peter, who is also her best friend.

Mud has other plans for her however, and they involve constant, (and I do mean constant), rape and beatings.

He has taken Caroline "for his brother", Owen, who he wants to teach how to have sex with a woman. Owen is developmentally challenged, has the mind of approximately 7 years old. Mud has raised him on hard core porn and now feels he's ready for the real thing.
Problem is, Owen isn't interested in sex, or watching Caroline get raped, or beaten. He's more interested in a playmate. Someone to read children's stories with, watch children's movies, and playing backgammon with.

Caroline needs to figure out a way to use this to her advantage in order to escape.

This book jumps bank and forth between the 99 days of captivity, and the 350 days after her captivity. The jumps are well timed and very easy to follow.

While I did find the book engaging for the most part, and like I said at the beginning of this review, I love the dark and taboo stories. But every time Mud went to Caroline, it got to be repetitious and not believable. I understand he was there to "show his brother 'how'", but it was almost the same thing over and over. The whole premise was a great idea, but there needed to be... something... more to Mud and Caroline. Mud was in there raping her sometimes 4 times a day.

Really? He was, from what I gathered from the story, at least in his 40's (I don't remember if his age was actually in there), so yeah, dunno about all that.

There were several spelling errors, but not enough to take away from the story. One of the most annoying ones, the author would actually misspell one of the lead character's name. Owen.. several times it was spelled "Own".

Overall, a pretty good read, I enjoyed the interaction between Owen and Caroline, and I enjoyed meeting other character's outside of Caroline's family, like Aiden, Ruth, and Charlene.

This is a great read by a great author who proves her growth as an author with each new release.

Caroline is a really likable character to me because she is such a fighter. She could have played the victim card and no one would question her, but she doesn't. She takes what she knows and what she learns and fights her way through the story. We also get a glimpse as to what happens to all of the innocent people who are affected by the behaviors and actions of one person.

A great example of tough subject matter done right!

It's incredible what a split decision can do to one's life. For Caroline Paterson, doing what she thought was a good deed and helping a stranger, ended up her worst nightmare. Caroline Paterson ended up being abducted from her small town and was held captive for 99 Days by an evil man named Mud and his younger brother Owen. Locked in their cabin, she was subjected to rape and torture as seemed that Mud had a rape fantasy fetish. Owen, on the other hand, was Caroline's bright spot during her kidnapping. Owen was born with an intellectual disability and is like a little kid, she teaches him to read and plays games with him. On the 100th day Caroline manages to escape, but when she returns home, she is like a leper as nobody knows how to act around her and the one person she loved most in the world is gone. With pain and revenge on the mind, Caroline decides to go and hunt down her kidnapper. What will she find when she discovers his true identity? Will Caroline this time be the one with all the power and in doing so, can she save and free Owen?

Until about half way in I wasn’t really feeling it. Whilst i liked the fact it was clearly well researched, I couldn’t help thinking ‘so what’s the point?’ It was pretty straight cut, girl gets kidnapped and abused, girl escapes and tries to figure out how to move on with her life. There wasn’t anything unexpected.

But halfway through things took a more exciting turn. Our mc and victim, Caroline, decides to look for her captor ‘mud’ herself since the police had all but abandoned the case. She starts working at a local diner in the town she’s hoping mud resides in, only one night after giving the owners grandson a lift home does she find he’s closer than she first thought. So what does she do with this insight? Go to the police? No. She decides to stay and try and take him out herself. Whilst that added an edge that was previously missing, I couldn’t sympathise with her from that point. I understand the need to get revenge but why the hell would you put yourself in that position again?!

I did like the ending though. Everyone except mud got a good one. Though I think I’d have liked a little bit more of a fitting revenge since it started to take that route. I’m giving this 2.5 rounded to 3 stars. I got through it in a couple of hours and not all of it was bad but it definitely wasn’t great either.

For someone who typically reads extremely dark, depraved, erotic romance books, this was a refreshing change! Yes, the female main character is abducted and raped for 99 days, and yes, the author does give details, this book is not DARK in the disturbing, graphic, explicit way I am accustomed to, and it is far from a romance.

99 DAYS is a remarkable, exciting, moving story about a young woman’s survival during and after her captivity. Fluctuating back-and-forth between the 99 days she was held captive with the weeks after, you will be shocked by the unpredictable method Caroline uses to reclaim her life. I did not want to put this book down!!

Although this book is extremely well written, it desperately needs to be proofread. On a regular basis there were missing words (”Owen looked me”), extra words (“How I would I react to them”), wrong words (“...things I wouldn’t wish I my worst enemy”), missing words (”My heart pounded like drum inside my chest.”) etc.. There were punctuation errors such as not using the FANBOYS comma rule, errors with homophones such as TO instead of TWO and typos like FURTHER when it should have been FARTHER. Aside from the need for a proofreading, though, this book is phenomenal!!!

99 days of suffering, 99 days of tragedy, 99 days of pain. This book it's about surviving horror, getting up and claiming the life that was taken from you. Each person has it's way of coping and dealing with it and this is Caroline's story of how she survive her hell.

I was not a fan of how easily the ending was tied up, and there were quite a few errors that should have been caught before publishing.

However, the story was extremely compelling and I did enjoy it immensely. Definitely worth the read.

Oh my god! This book was so good!
“Be brave, even when you’re scared, be brave.”
Caroline goes through hell. Being kidnapped, sexually & physically abused for 99 days. Her torment lasts more than 99 days.
I know not every story needs a love story or even some romance but i was really hoping Owen and Caroline would form a different type of bond.
But i loved this book. It was great from beginning to end.

Excellent read. It was really difficult to read some of the passages, but it was so intense and gripping I had a hard time putting it down. Love the way the author writes; different from the books I usually read. (SPOILER ALERT):

Love the revenge the taken on the captor and the way she didn't hesitate to torture him both mentally and physically.

Well written but a really tough subject. I felt terrible for our poor heroine/victim. I found this a really brutal and poignant read. Owen broke my heart. Such a ghastly situation. Not an easy read at all!!

I can't say enough good things about this book! This was a different type of book for AnnaLisa Grant and she nailed it! I want to say so much more but I don't want to spoil anything for anyone! The heroine in the story is allowed to be a bad-ass for once which is so satisfying!

AnnaLisa Grant wrote an amazing story about a girl who got kidnapped and had horrific things happen to her. Things that no human should endure but it have to this young female. This book made me cry and felt sorry for the character who had endured it all. Must read and it is amazing story to read

“Be Brave. Even when your scared, be brave”

I am always up for a good psychological thriller. I wasn’t exactly sure what I was in for when I started this book. I knew as soon as I read the first page that this would probably be a book I would read in one sitting. I don’t usually like the stories that bounce back and forth through time but felt it was done very well. When I was reading about the past it was building up my anticipation of the story in the present. There was a few times that I wondered if the author would dare to take the story in a certain direction and then when she actually went down that path I was devastated.

Caroline is a sweet and courageously strong young woman. She falls victim to the old tale of being in the wrong place at the right time. What follows is a certain hell no one should ever have to endure. She suffers blow after blow and just when you think she has finally hit rock bottom, the worse it could possibly get, she is blindsided and pushed even farther down. She has to decide to either accept her fate, or fight for her freedom.

Owen is a sweet boy with life challenges that is thrown into a life he thinks is completely normal because its all he’s ever known. Following his journey and his heartbreaking realizations gave me mixed feeling about his role in Caroline’s situation.

Mud is……I think his name says enough.

The story has so many twists and turns it kept me guessing and left me shocked, sad and angry. This is definitely a dark read. The author does her best to not to go too far down the rabbit hole but still far enough that you are able to grasp the enormity of the situation.

Trigger Warning: This book deals with many level of abuse and may not be for everyone.

I bought the book based on it running two timelines concurrently - alternating chapters.

Timeline one - Caroline being kidnapped and enduring "unimaginable horrors" until her escape.

Trigger warning: rape, beating, mental abuse, etc.

Timeline two - Caroline recovering from her kidnapping and finding her own path toward healing (which may involve hunting down her kidnapper when the police can't find him, just saying).

I wanted to see the device in action, pretty sure it would fail, but curious enough to look. It worked perfectly. The plot is tight, the switch back and forth between past and present clear, building tension throughout the story, and the resolutions of both timelines carried good payoffs.

The description of her abuse are low-keyed enough to let a reader know how horrible her experience was without completely living through them with her. This book is not torture porn, but emotional journey of survival (timeline one) and healing (timeline two) without ever forgetting the story is a thriller.

With a Master's degree in Counseling and a background in human services, Ms. Grant captures up- and down-sides of how human society and institutions interact with individuals who have suffered rape and abuse all within a fictional entertaining yet informative story.

Reading time: 3 and a half hours.

Caroline lives a pretty routine life, until it all changes in the blink of an eye when she is kidnapped in broad daylight. She’s held captive for 99 days, beaten, and raped daily. She comes to realize that her captor, Mud, has no plans to release her, and she is left to fight for her survival and pray for the opportunity to escape, which could depend on his mentally challenged brother, Owen, who views her as his friend and playmate. If she can save herself, she may be able to save him, too.

This book is a bit different than what I tend to read, but, boy, I’m glad I did! What an intense, emotional roller-coaster ride. The book is set up to alternate between Caroline’s 99 days in captivity and the 350 days after she was released. The time jumps are logically done, making them easy to follow. Some passages are quite intense and difficult to read, but they do have a purpose. Caroline is a likeable heroine, and I love how she is portrayed as a fighter vs. a victim. Owen is definitely a star, as well. While there are some editing issues, this is still a highly engaging book that had me turning the pages to read “just one more chapter.”

**Due to the subject matter (rape and kidnapping), I’d recommend this for a mature audience (18+).**

Riveting, Compelling but not for the faint of heart

This novel should be read with caution by those who have suffered sexual abuse and violence; it may trigger PTSD symptoms.
Sexual violence happens everyday every 3-5 seconds in this Country and this novel explicitly describes all the abuses that come with it. This novel, while dark, brings the aspects of trauma and recovery into sharp focus. You will have tears & you’ll feel the strength of spirit it takes not only to survive but live.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I picked this book up on a whim. Nothing I had started
reading lately was holding my attention until 99 Days. I made the mistake of starting this book at bedtime and then staying up all night to finish it.

99 Days was a book about a girl who lived through the unthinkable and came out the other side stronger. Parts were hard to read but I had to know what happened and I’m so glad I pushed through. Without giving anything away all I’m going to say is read this book.

It absolutely kept me on the edge. It was well written. I haven't even turned my tv on since I got the signed book at Penned Con last weekend.
I would read at my lunch 1hr and when I got home from work until my eyes wouldn't stay open. This story really gets your mind thinking and it happens in the real world.. Great Job!

This book does a great job of handling some super dark subject matter. I really liked the way it flipped back and forth between Caroline's time in captivity and after so that you get the full picture without being immersed in the darker parts for long periods of time. The supporting characters added a ton of depth to the story as well as some much needed lighter moments too.

This book is quite disturbing, but well written. Sadly, I felt everything could have been accurate and possible in the real world, even if some other reviewers didn't.
This is a hard story about a kidnapped girl and her equally hard story of her life post-abduction. Both stories play out at the same time in alternating chapters. Even though it alternates, it is still understandable and cohesive.

Intense reading!

Intensely Suspenseful!! A real departure from her Lake series but equally enjoyable. You find yourself rooting for the main character and feel her pain through out the storyline. Even though she becomes a vigilante at the end you can’t help wondering if you wouldn’t do the same thing in her place. For mature YA and adults only due to disturbing content.

A young lady is kidnapped and raped and brutally treated for 99 days. The police are getting nowhere solving her case, so she takes matters into her own hands. What she finds out puts a real spin on this excellent book of her journey to bring justice to herself and any other victims this man has out there. Excellent book!

Wow. Disturbing story. Scary to think this scenario has probably happened to a young girl somewhere.
Good character development for Caroline, never really got a feel for rest of ‘cast’ outside of her, Mod & Owen.
