Kalla has uncovered the greatest conspiracy the government has hidden under everyone’s nose spearheaded by the Abyss, a powerful underground agency. Abyss has weaponized humans that can control time and space itself. However, they weren’t prepared for a coup d'etat from their own creations led by Kalla. Assisted by her ability to manipulate the climate around her, Kalla embarks on a mission to stop the underground government agency. Follow Kalla through the deep alcoves of the Abyss Experimentation Labs to the forests of the renegade Myst as Kalla learns that not every battle can be won and some victories come with a dire price.
Amber Morant is an author and chaser of dragons in the Dayton, Ohio area. She has published several books within fantasy, exploring Japanese cultural influences. Exploring worlds outside of our own and collecting swords from different parts of the world has become part of who she is.
From the time she was in fourth grade trying to write the next “great Harry Potter” book in 2001 to now, Amber has been writing non-stop and finding magic in her everyday life. Outside of writing, Amber spends her time reading, playing video games, and chasing dragons.
This is such a spectacular story involving the story of a young woman named Kalla who has the ability to manipulate heat and cold-fire and ice. Those with abilities like her are known to the world as Techs. Their lives however are far from pleasant with the powerful government agency known as the Abyss has the authority to torture, torment and experiment on them. Kalla finds herself being pulled by the forces of the Abyss who seek to torture and experiment on her, and the Myst, a group of free Techs on a mission to protect their own from the forces of the Abyss. Whoa!!! It took a while to get started on this one because of a formatting snafu... But I am really glad I did! How many times will the "teens with superpowers" pattern repeat, before we can all agree that it's overdone? The answer is STILL "Just one more time." Morant succeeds in giving us a new take on the typical tropes—a little bit of conspiracy and memory wipe, a little bit of global cataclysm, a little bit of self-sacrifice—but she places the reader squarely in "Camp Kalla" as we see, feel, and identify with the main character right from the very beginning as she tries to figure out her life when all she's known is exploitation and pain. The unique tone shows from the very beginning. The "normal" girl imprisoned by impossibly cruel people until she begins to manifest supernatural powers, which give her the confidence she needs to stand up for herself, defy her captors, and embark on a journey you haven't read before!
My only beef was that the pacing felt a little rushed in places, a lot of (insanely creative!) information just dumped into the narrative, and there were a smattering of typos—but on the whole, I really liked the story and the characters and the AWESOME, one-of-a-kind feel to a popular YA trend! Morant is an excellent addition to the shelves of readers who enjoy a super-powered, high-stakes adventure!
Set in a dystopian future, Kalla is a story about a war between “techs” and the people who are responsible for their creation. Throughout the book we get to see this war play out through Kalla’s viewpoint.
We get several fascinating and unique supporting characters on both sides of the conflict Kalla finds herself in the middle of. The power that the folks possess is pretty impressive but their are several times throughout where in that exact moment you feel completely connected to what the characters are going through emotionally and that is due to how grounded they are.
The book is written in several segments, with a few larger stories following Kalla and the “techs” interspersed with much shorter ones where we see how Kalla experiences events such as Christmas. Overall it’s a great book full of lots of adventure and science fiction but also with characters you can connect with.
I am a avid reader and if a book does not catch my interest within the first couple of chapters I wont finish reading it. With Kalla it caught my interest straight away because it that bit different from other paranormal stories. You did not know how it would end for her and the people who were all trying to survive and do the right by everyone,
Wow! This was a wild ride! I liked the basic story. But I got lost in the middle somewhere! It's like I'm missing part of the book. The beginning was good as was the ending. It was hard to follow, especially in the middle which ruined a good book!
Totally different paranormal book. You feel that you want to keep reading to find out what happens with the main character. Fast paced book, very enjoyable
