Bears, a comic style book that takes you on three seperate adventures with three distinct bears.

You have the grizzly bear, the most ferocious protector of her babies in the animal kingdom. Join the ferocious mother on a spring day as she defends her triplet cubs from predators. Some of those predators happen to be bears. On your adventure you'll learn why male bears are such a threat to bear cubs. I do have to warn you that the mother bear isn't ashamed of feeding her babies naturally so there is a breastfeeding picture. Don't worry, it's discreet. That was my attempt at humor. Tag along as momma and cubs become the target of the tourist paparazzi. And laugh as one cub ruins the hunt forcing mom to have to "grab fast food". In a humerous attempt the cubs somehow manage to stay caught up as mom is hot on the heels of supper. At the end of the day the cubs are safe and full. The mountain views are stunning. They beckon for you to grab your pack and hit the trail. Move on from momma grizzly bear and join the black bear.

Ah the black bear. He is such a curious creature. This story really made us giggle. Join the black bear in a family's pool. He has done dug through their thrash and broke the bird seeder. What a mischievous bear! Run with him as he escapes those pesky rangers. You can just hear the neighbor's dogs going crazy over a bear being in their neighborhood! Watch the bear as he falls from his unusual and amusing hiding spot. And then later that night tune in to the local news to have the story retold to you with the bears ending added. Dazed and confused he wakes up at home. Safe and sound where he belongs. Move on from the black bear to the polar bear.

The Polar bear is king of the ice. Read the tale of an old bear who is scarred up from a hard life. He has a typical old male young male encounter. Eh the old male will let that whipper snapper go this time. The only thing that will wake him from his nap is the growling of his stomache. Walk the cold ice with him as he starts on the hunt for food and with all manners of a bear join him as he dines on a seal. There is a picture of him dining on a seal. It isn't overly graphic but the emphasis of carnivorous habits are present. I'm only including this info for readers who might be sensitive. Personally, I have no issues with it. It's not overly graphic and is part of the natural cycle of life. End your journey with the polar bear as he earns his right to keep his position in the noble place of king of the ice. Yes, that whipper snapper he was challeneged by earlier in the story shows back up but he learned rather quickly who the "real bear" is.

The book is full of educational facts on the life of each three kinds of bears. The stories are entertaining and amusing. The graphics are amazing! Ted Rechlin did an excellent job in his book Bears. I highly recommend it as a gift for any bear lovers (or just plain animal lovers) in your life!

This comic features three different species of bears in realistic storylines of life in the wild. Young readers are introduced to a grizzly bear who fiercely protects her three cubs, a black bear who wanders into the suburbs and quickly learns the human world isn't as comfy as it first appears, and a polar bear who is driven to defend his status as "king of the ice" when a younger upstart challenges him.

I appreciated that the black bear's story did not end up with violence committed against the bear--rather, wildlife officers tranquilize and return him to the wild. Whenever wild creatures have run-ins with humans, even if no one is hurt, this can end up resulting in a tragic outcome for the animal.

My kids love this (especially the grizzly section) and I was entertained as well. There aren’t as many facts as the other Rechlin books we’ve read, but it is still primarily aimed at being educational.

Nicely done book; excellent illustrations. The stories are nicely varied in terms of showing an array of way bear exist in the world (I just couldn't think of another way to say that): in different environments, in dealing with each other, in dealing with humans, etc.
