BLACK EDGE Series (5 books!)
Mr. Black bought me at a secret auction on his yacht. I’ve never done anything like this before. What happens when one night isn’t enough?
I was quite disappointed with this book. The story had good premise. I quite enjoyed the first couple of chapters, getting to know the background story etc. After about the 5th chapter it really started to go downhill and I'm not ashamed to admit that I didn't finish.
It all got boring after that. Usually in these sort of books there was the mystery and the tension, you know the 'will they, won't they' thing. I think this was supposed to happen but it failed. It was more like 'yeah they will'. No angst, which I love in romance books. Kinda flatlined for me.
I'm giving it 2 stars because I really did like the first couple of chapters and I thought the story had promise, however in its current condition I can't say i got the feels for it.
I received an ARC at no cost from the author and voluntarily reviewed.
Despite a few editing problems, this was a solid read until the last couple of chapters. A storyline involving an ex-boyfriend was introduced at that point which went a bit over the top. It really wasn't necessary and didn't contribute anything to the plot. Actually, it had the opposite effect. Perhaps if it had been introduced earlier and built into the story more it woulld have worked better. As it was, it felt like it came out of nowhere and was completely irrelevant to the storyline. Otherwise, it was a fun, light read.
"It’s maybe cruel to say this, but my parents gave me the impression that love only meant one thing." And that one thing is? Read the next sentence. No, that's not the 'one thing'. Keep waiting. Read more. And...nothing. There are many instances in the book that entail an opening sentence but no development, unity, or coherence. Furthermore, there are quite a few grammatical errors. And by the time readers get closer to the end of the book, everything speeds up, as if the author has realized that she must stop on a certain page or just wants to be done with writing this book.
Unbeknownst to me, The Debt is book #2 in a series about the Wild Brothers. I doubt I could get through book #1 after reading this one. Nevertheless, the protagonist in The Debt is Brielle, a 25-year-old waitress whose dreams have been deferred due to her mother's potentially terminal illness. As noted by a previous reviewer, the first couple of chapters were good. Based on Ms. Byrd's description, it is clear that Brielle and her mother are swimming in a sea of debt and are sure to drown until a wealthy benefactor provides a check. But there are strings attached to the money, and Brielle must repay the wealthy philanthropist. This is how the love story begins.
I had qualms about a few things in this book, but the one that stood out the most concerns Brielle's previous relationship with someone who can cause major issues and not only put Brielle's life in danger but also Wyatt's. Brielle allows Wyatt--the man she loved--to believe a lie. But she seems to be the epitome of truth, does not take any bull, and all that is good at the beginning of the book? Yet, this person from her past is her kryptonite. Nah, sis. I did not buy it. Before it was all over, I had become frustrated with Brielle, Wyatt, the ex-lover, and Wyatt's sister Opal.
A wealthy young man, Jax, and his brothers stop at a diner. There, Jax is taken with the waitress, Sophia. He returns later to ask her out, but she turns him down.
Learning all he can about Sophia, he finds a way to help her and her mother.
A year or so later, his help is now considered a debt, though, that she has to repay, or so he hopes that the time together will change her mind about him.
Spending so much time together makes for high drama (too much so in this reader's opinion). Take out all the angst-ridden soliloquies from Sophia, all the minor squabbles caused by Sophia's emotional state of mind, and there isn't much to this story.
Add in ancillary characters who cause more emotional upheavals and threats make this an issue-filled romance. Continual emotional roadblocks by Sophia don't help; neither does Jax's rash actions. Will they be together in the end? Is a happily-ever-after possible for the pair?
The way it was going, this reader expected a cliffhanger ending; fortunately, there wasn't.
Per usual, a few What-the-tuck trends (chiseled jaw, green-eyed character, smirks, winks, and an uber-wealthy male) are included.
This is the story of Jax Grayson and Sophia Elizabeth Cole. Sophia was working as a waitress to take care of her and her mom Danielle. Her mom has cancer and Sophia had a sister who died of cancer. Sophia meets Jax as she is working as a waitress. Jax finds out about Sophia's mom's cancer and pays for it and that's where this story takes off. It is a good read and I would highly recommend this book 📚📖.
The Debt is a romantic story of a boy who doesn't know what real love is until he meets a girl who sends him away. Wyatt Wild is playboy, he comes from a rich family and was raised by his nanny. He doesn't really know what love feels like until he meets Brielle. Their chance encounter leaves Wyatt feeling and reeling from her rejection. Brielle Thompson has been taking care of her mom for years. Her mother will die without an experimental drug treatment. In a fortunate turn of events Brielle receives a check that will pay for her mother's treatments and save her life. What Brielle hadn't expected was a letter in the mail two years later requesting her presents to repay her debt.
I really enjoyed the story. Brielle is a strong heroine. She rejects Wyatt when they first meet because of her priorities. She works hard trying to support her mother, while putting her future aside. Brielle also has integrity. She does not have to repay the debt however she feels compelled to do what's right. When Brielle discovers it was Wyatt who sent her the money she's shocked and immediately sets boundaries. Brielle struggles to overcome her insecurities and learns acceptance. Wyatt learns the difference between infatuation and love. He will follow the rules and fight to keep Brielle but will Brielle's secrets become too much for their relationship to endure? 4 Repaid Stars!
So I got to sample this book from book one. It sound so good and I was yes I must buy it. Why 2 star?? This book sound so good until like 50% into my kindle I realize this book sucks. They don't do anything to know each other. Love his pov but there only so much a person can take. O btw guess what when u get to 80% on your kindle it's the end lols and they give you a sample of book one. So really this book is even shorter than you think it's really is. I'm more disappointed. He did something great. The writer should of really went in depth about the emotions behind everything.
There wasn't anything I liked about the story, It’s slow, very predictable. I cannot stand the female lead in this book. She was obnoxious, weak, pathetic, who cry, whyne, accuse him of things he did do, He is not any better and his sister was not good, overall I was very annoyed with this book..
I liked the book. Very strong start to the series. The main characters clash but in a fun, humorous way. Will be interesting to see where the author takes the storyline.
I don't even know where to start on this book. I have so many mixed feelings, that I had a hard time just rating the book never mind writing a review!
I guess the best place to start is by saying this is definitely a quick read book, it's got around I think 41-ish chapters I believe, all the chapters are fairly short and quick to read; I started this book the night of August 30th and finished it by noon on September 1st (Just an example of how quick a read it is).
Okay, the actual review.. where to start.. I don't want to say this was a bad book, but I don't want to say it was good either. I'm kind of stuck in the middle leaving me to say it was an OK read.
I guess first off I'd like to say the book description is very misleading to me, I re-read it after finished the book as I always do (habit) and I've found the description definitely gets your hopes up more than the actual book does. I mean it say "I owe him a debt. A big one. A dark and dangerous stranger paid for my mother's cancer treatment, saving her life" so without giving too much away I'll say just this.. the man was not "dark and dangerous" he was actually very sweet and yes he has money he's rich but you cannot compare the man in this book to all those other rich billion/millionaires that are actually bad ass and rough and whatever, this man was literally the sweetest, I mean he even gives her the choice to go back home if she doesn't want to be there! what man in any other book called "dark and dangerous" lets the girl go? none that I've ever read until now! (Sorry that was probably a spoiler huh?)
So, now to get to where the book made it hard to rate and whatever.. We just heard about how this man is nice and sweet and whatver, right? Sounds like a nice read, a man who pays for a stranger's mother's cancer treatment, lovely. Well this book took a turn, I thought because it said "Dark and Dangerous" that once the girl met the man shit was gonna go down and get more exciting and sexy, right? WRONG. The situation at first came off more as a stalker thing once she met him and he explained stuff, I won't say more than that just because I don't want to spoil anything, but anyways, she didn't see it as excessive and stalkerish (whatever her issue). The story moved kind of quickly, I mean they meet, have dinner, he escorts her back to her room like a gentleman and they end up kissing right away, like damn, not even any in between banter and tension just straight to the relationship shit! and here's where it hit me hardest, once they have sexual relations for the first time in the book (which I think also doesn't take too long or have much of a build up to it) it's just one of those stories where it's quick - almost no detail sex, then there's a little space in between where the story quickly moves to them talking and bantering for a few seconds or just the next morning and BAM they're having that quick - almost no detailed sex again, and it just repeats like that every once in a while.
Another thing I noticed and that actually bothered me was (and don't get me wrong, I know relationships aren't perfect and there are fights, and arguments and misunderstandings) they both seemed to almost always be apologizing to the other and getting into arguements because one of them says one thing then the other one misinterprets the meaning and that happens a few times actually, but it's so bothersome to me that they just constantly misunderstand each other throughout the book and jump to conclusions without being like "Okay, what do you mean by that?" or whatever not once did anyone step back and look and say okay maybe I'm taking this wrong I'll ask for more details.
The last thing I'll end this review on is saying, I'm very bothered by how it explains that Sophia (the main character) had dropped her life at the age of 20 to take care of her mother and get multiple jobs to pay for food and keep their little trailer and pay for some of her mothers medication, yet once you get further into the story her mom makes a visit to the mans house to see her daughter and she is just completely different than the woman you meet in the beginning, like yeah you're alive and healthy now, great! but just like Sophia says she was her mother but not at the same time, she turns into this self-absorbed snotty bitch, and even though all this drama goes on and everything gets fixed in the end not once, NOT ONCE, does this woman acknowledge how much her daughter truly gave up to take care of her and all she does is run off with some man she barely knows and be a snotty stuck-up woman.
Anyways, that's my review without giving away too much of the story, I didn't hate the book, but it wasn't the best thing I've ever read either, and I mean most of it was predictable, not all of it, but most and I mean who likes a predictable book? where's the surprises and turns. Definitely not what I expected out of this book, but I left it a 3 star rating for being an OK read.
NOTE: This is not the cover or the character's names of this novel by Ms. Byrd. However, it is the same story. Note the characters names in this review are different from the characters stating in the brief description.
Jax is the youngest from a rich family. They live lavish lifestyle in all aspects of this life. They take their life for granted. Jax knows that he can get what he wants due to his looks, & $. He just wants to stay the playboy & screw as many rich beauties as he can. Not be a responsible Grayson son like his father the great Dr. Grayson, Then Sofia, waits on them at a highway diner that he & his sibling’s pass on their way back from a fun get together brother trip. Sofia is not his usual type but something about her independence, fisty attitude tough ties Jax. None of his model, shallow dates have n ever made him skip a beat. Sofia turns the billionaire playboy down. Which makes Jax more determined to get the girl. He comes back to ask her out again with no brother’s around. She still says know. Then he finds out from another guest at the diner that she is responsible for taking care of her mother’s cancer. That is when he plans to save her mom by paying for the trial treatment. Sofia cannot believe that the 250k check is real. When she confirms she cashes that check & gets mom in the trial program. Which saves her life. Sofia can now try to pursue her dreams. Maybe? Two years later she gets a letter to come to the Grayson mansion to pay her debt back. What debt? She will be a PA for the Grayson billionaire. What she does not realize is that her benefactor was none other than the man from the Diner. Jax Grayson. Who she had the hots for? Now she needs to know what he wants to pay her debt back. I hope just friends, nothing more. I am not in his league to be involved with a man like that. I enjoyed the story & the characters in the plot line. However, I don’t like some of the outcomes of the “debt”. The mother changes character when she meets a millionaire from France. People really change characters when they fall into money? I also did not like the fact that the only challenge they discuss in this HEA story is Sofia learning how to ride a horse. Why not get her into college to follow her dream as a doctor? Though I did appreciate that they didn’t make Jax a shallow jerk. He made mistakes & admitted to them. He appreciated Sofia’s mind & heart. Why wouldn’t he fall in love with Sofia’s kindness, fight & times of vulnerability. This story deals, with different emotions, fear, resentment growing love. They plot discusses loss & abuse. Read the story of the millionaire & his sarcastic, fighting, strong woman that touches his heart. Can he protect her from her own past.
ax goes to a diner & meets Sofia, a sexy waitress at a diner who will not take crap from any man. Especially not from a rich guy. No matter how hot she thinks he is. Sofia barely makes ends meet to bring home money to pay bills since her mom's cancer diagnosis. Every penny is needed to get mom in a trial treatment program that costs a fortune. She doesn't need perverts, trying to molest h
This was the sweetest story. Brielle is at the end of her rope. Her mom is only 44 and dying of cancer. The bills are piling up and they don't have money for an experimental treatment that would probably save her life, or at least put her in remission. Brielle works in a diner and also at a bar, forgoing a college education so she can try to pay the medical bills and keep food on the table. One night a man comes into the diner. He is smitten by Brielle and asks her out. She says no. This happens again. He's quite rich from a well to do family and not used to being told no. However, he respects her wishes. It comes to his attention about her situation and mother. He sends an annonomous donation through the experimental foundation so her mom can get treatment. This saves her life. Several years later, Brielle receives an invitation to work at an estate for a year to pay the debt off. This also pays a whole lot more than what the diner pays. Here she finds the man she once met. She is angry and refuses any hanky panky. They are hot and cold. He tries respecting her wishes. Well, I'm not saying any more. You really should read this. It is so good! It's the best story. There were things I would've never seen coming. It's Cinderella meets Pretty Woman. I'm not usually into this kind of story but I loved it!
Base this book on this cover & title and you’ll get the story. It’s was pretty much what I expected going in plot wise. The only real twist I got was the dramatic personality twist in the protagonist against her mother. It was rather odd to go from dotting on her I’ll parent to giving her the side eye and accusations of moving on with her life back to I love all over again.
I knew I would smut, I knew it was poor girl meets rich guy, rich guy falls in love, poor girl doesn’t think is enough, rich guy gives her the world and they live HEA.
Will I read it again. Never. Did it meet my needs of wanting to read some smut. Absolutely.
The debt is for people who know what exactly they want from a book and expect to get exactly what they had been seeking.
Overall the writing was decent, the plot was average, the sex well that whats I came for and it was exceeding.
This book had potential but it went wrong in so many ways. It started really good and I liked the MC but a lot of things weirded me out, first it was the fact he kept saying and doing rude things and immediately apologised for it after that. She always forgive him and it gave me red flag vibes. The Second thing is kinda related, they fought allot in this book. It was short and half of the time they weren't speaking or just had s€x without actually talking. This book could've been great but the author tried to put way too many things I'm a short time. (Pregnancy, mother issues, crazy ex, mean sister-in-law,..)
Not like Charlotte to leave things so open at the end, generally the story finishes and questions are answered. Not so much this time around.....no knowledge of the se of O's baby, what about the guys that he came in with the first time, what happened with her friend from school, the older lady at the diner, did Wyatt have no secrets to tell????? Just different things that would have usually been answered.
I got this novella free for signing up for the authors newsletter. This novella is about a young girl who is helped by a rich guy who is obsessed with her. In return for money, she moves to his house to serve him for a year. Although there is great sex, the story is behind that. This is a well written novella with a good story line.
I couldn't believe what I read poor people feel entitlement too. Sophia a young, naive, uneducated, immature, bitchy, and a liar. Sophie was an infuriating pain in the ass heroine. I had to make myself finish reading. I didn't like the ending. No passion with Sophie and Jax.
It was boring to read and the plot did not filled my espectations. The main femail character developed a total dependance in a rich man and she’s not satified on how her life turned out, that’s just kept going untill the end. I just kept waiting for something that never came.
Where do I begin? This book is like a soft merge between 50 shades of grey and 50 shades freed. The story line isn’t very coherent and the chapter lengths feel rushed as they’re so short and try to progress the story faster than feels natural. Character development is non existent and the characters are hard to relate to or even like. I found this book difficult to want to finish.
This was an incredible book from begining to end. Happy it had a wonderful & romantic ending. Jax is every women's dream man. I enjoyed reading it & Cantonese to read more of your books.
What I liked about this story is how the characters interact with one another. Sounds just like real life and now what will happen next?! Can hardly wait to get the next one!
This was a DNF for me. It was super disappointing from the beginning. From the synopsis, I thought this book would be really good. I made it to 38% and I was through.
