In her Helen Exley Giftbook series, the editor produces a series of quotations demonstrating the importance and lasting value of friendship. She uses quotations from the earliest times, Marcus Martial c40-c104, through to the modern day.
One early offering is a Chinese Oath of Friendship that ends with the lines 'When Heaven and Earth mingle/Not till then will I part from you' and an unknown author says, 'The weary miles pass swiftly, taken in a joyous stride. And all the world seems brighter, when a friend walks by our side'. Yes we all like to keep our friends forever and things do not seem half so bad when we have a friend with us to confide in.
William James (1842-1910) says, 'Wherever you are it is your own friends who make your world' while Robert Israeloff endorses this and adds to it with 'Silences and distances are woven into the texture of every true friendship.' And Pam Brown follows this up with 'A friend may move away - so far that you may never meet again. And yet they are a part of you forever.'
One that I find a complete truism is Pam Brown's 'What's the fun of an adventure if you can't share it with a friend?' It is quite surprising what I won't do for that very reason now that Linda has gone ... no more adventures of any kind! And on a tenuously similar note Mark Twain writes, 'Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with.' Another very true statement.
Something that perhaps we should all cling onto is Sir Geoffrey Keynes' 'At every stage of my life friendship has been the main source of my quite outrageously enjoyable existence' - I'm not too sure about the 'outrageously'! - and the collection ends with Julia Wedgewood's 'My friendship with you was - is - the great blessing of my life.' And that is how we should surely view our friends.
There are plenty more aphorisms to enjoy in this delightful little book.
