Informative and action packed
This was a fun little book, packed with heaps of information and facts. I struggled to get started with it, but once I got going, it was not disappointing. Ideal for dinosaur enthusiasts, up for an adventure in the Amazons.
Dinosaurs and the Amazon rainforest have been my thing since I was little, so I had to give this a shot. It's a fun, quick, and informative read for grade schoolers... I know I would have loved it when I was a kid.
Matt is 12, and he has a special ability--the ability to hold a dino egg and see what the dinosaur looked like in the past. Matt is excited that he's finally old enough to tag along on an expedition with his dad, a paleontologist and paleo-artist, to find dinosaur eggs in the Amazon.
While the gimmick seems to be dinosaurs and Matt's special ability, dinosaurs take a second-seat to the rainforest in this book. More information is given about the rainforest than about the dinos, which seemed odd. However, it's the kind of information that would have had me wanting to know more about the Amazon, so it's not a bad thing to focus on.
For being the first book in the Dinosaur Detectives series, the first chapters seemed to assume that we already knew the characters from a previous installment--I honestly thought I was reading book 2 in the series, until I looked at the title on Goodreads. The first chapter did set up Matt's ability, but it didn't transition into the second chapter very well, which is why I thought it was a later installment--it felt more like a brief character recap than a proper introduction.
It was disconcerting to see the characters take stereotypical views--Matt thinks his cousin, Jo, wouldn't be able to appreciate dinosaurs or the adventure they were going on. And when she does show that she's knowledgeable in regards to the expedition, it comes across as a show off. It was a quick enough read that I didn't mind it too much, but it was annoying... I hope in the other books, Jo starts to come across as a stronger character.
Overall, I would recommend it to grade schoolers who want a quick read and who are interested in dinosaurs and/or the rainforest; however, I didn't think it would impress most middle-grade readers on up.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a free copy to review!
I kind of liked this book. It was a fun read. If you love dinosaurs and the Amazon give this a go. It's a really easy read but I wanted more. It's short and I mean short. But It's written at a good pace.
I received a free copy of this thanks to Netgalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing. This in no way affected my review.

The Dinosaur Detective in the Amazon Rainforest is about a young boy called Matt Sharp, who has a special gift. When he touches a dinosaur egg, he is whisked away on a magical vision of the prehistoric world. This is a great thing for Matt, because he wants to be a palaeontologist when he grows up, just like his Dad. Now that he’s twelve, he’s allowed to accompany his Dad on a trip to the Amazon Rainforest in search of some fossils. Unfortunately, his annoying eleven year old cousin, Jo, gets to come along. Even worse, his dad’s rival is also on the trail of the fossils. Who will get to them first?
I decided to pick this book up off of Netgalley because dinosaurs were a large thing for me when I was a kid. It’s always nice to see the continuation of something I enjoyed as a child being carried on for new generations. I was curious, I wanted to see how it was being continued, and maybe even that I would enjoy it and find another new series I could read and indulge the inner child still living within me.
I actually really, really enjoyed reading this. This was fun to read, and Matt reminds me of myself when I was a child. Baudet has a really great way of writing that just flows and allows the reader to get lost within the book. There wasn’t a second I didn’t enjoy, reading this book, and it really made me think a lot more about the passions I loved as a kid. This book allowed me to revisit my childhood, and for that, I’m grateful to Baudet for.
This was a wonderful story. I was really enamoured by it, but I feel like the ending was a little rushed. It could have been done a little smoother, but Baudet has done an amazing job. Not only educational with correct facts on the creatures of the Amazonian rainforest, and it was really wonderful to see this, but also education on the illegal logging of the Amazon rainforest. This was a pretty bold move, and is really educational for young children. It may even inspire the naturists of the future. Not many authors care about the correct facts when writing children’s books.
This was a wonderful book and I’m really happy to see there are another three books in this series. I’ll definitely be popping into my library soon to pick them up and read them through. If you know a dinosaur lover of a relatively young age, this series might just be the perfect Christmas present for them!

Join Matt and his family on this exhilarating adventure through the Amazon.
Aimed at grades 1 though 6 for subject matter. The text is geared more toward 3 to 6 graders for reading on their own, but is perfect for reading and sharing with younger readers. Pen and Ink Illustrations are well done and help young readers follow along the story. I enjoyed sharing the story with a class of second graders I subbed for a week with. They also seemed to enjoy the story and listened closely.
My rating of "The Dinosaur Detectives in the Amazon Rainforest" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.
My granddaughter has been all about dinosaurs since she was 2 years old. She loves telling people she wants to be a paleontologist when she grows up. So I couldn't wait to share this book with her.
Matt is the 12-year-old son of a highly respected palaeontologist. He wants to follow in his Dad's footsteps. Matt is smart and quite mature for his young age and he has a special ability that cannot be taught nor learned from any book. I guess you would call it a gift - When he touches a dinosaur egg he sees visions of the prehistoric world he wants to study. He basically gets 'first hand' information about the dinosaur, what their life was like, what the earth was like when they roamed here,...etc., etc.
Dad, Matt, and his cousin Jo are headed to the Amazon in search of fossils. Matt is beside himself that eleven year old Jo gets to tag along. . . he had to wait until he was twelve. Uggh. You can definitely tell that Matt is bothered by this. However, his excitement about the possibility of finding a fossil soon takes over. But they are not alone in this search. His Dad's rival is following them. The rival team wants to find the fossils and stake their claim to fame. But they don't want to do all the work.
The story lets the reader "see" what Matt sees and does an excellent job of conveying a lot of detailed dinosaur information in an interesting and exciting way. The dialogue is age appropriate, the pace is consistent, the characters are three dimensional, and easily relatable. It was a fun read. My granddaughter is almost 7 and she really enjoyed it. She said she wanted to know what they did next. That tells me this is a good book for young readers. If they love dinosaurs, they will love this book. If they have no interest whatsoever in dinosaurs they will enjoy this story. If the latter is the case, they may very well become dinosaur lovers after this trip to the Amazon.
This is a really good read for all those middle schoolers who have a passion for adventure and dinosaurs. It remains interesting and at times fast-paced while being easy to follow and enjoyable. Matt has just turned 12 and has a curious ability to touch a dinosaur egg and see the creature as it would have been in life, Along with his dad, a well-respected palaeontologist and artist, he is allowed to go on his first dig, however, much to Matt's annoyance others get to come along too, not all off then invited. His cousin Jo is one of the expedition, but her interests are more with the illegal logging taking place in the Amazon forest setting than on dinosaur eggs. How this gets them both into trouble and how the uninvited followers all fit into this adventure you will have to read to find out. Reading this book will introduce you to a set of characters that I am sure you and your children will enjoy following in their future adventures. I for one am looking forward to the next episode of Matt and his father.
*thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
2 stars. While I can see its potentioal for younger children, It wasnt for me. It wasnt bad, and if you enjoy reading about what its like to go travelling through a rainforest then this is a really good book. But it just confirmed why Id never be going into one. There is alot of information about fhe animals and insects so if that is also an intrest for you, then you would prob enjoy this book. Aimed at middle grade readers, ones a bit older or younger may even enjoy it.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book, which is a great story about a boy who can touch dinosaur eggs and see the original dinosaur. The book was quite short, and I'd recommend it more for younger readers, especially those who are dinosaur obsessed! I really enjoyed the environmental themes which were intertwined with the story as well. I have high hopes for the rest of this series.
This was a pretty fun read. It talks about dinosaurs a bit and you spend time in the Amazon Rainforest. But there is a lot of commentary on the illegal logging going on more so than the actual rainforest. It was interesting though. You do get to read about a few of the animals in their natural habitat. This was the first stop on our Reading Around the World adventure,
Perfect for early chapter book readers who are also dinosaur enthusiasts. Environmental concerns with the Amazon rainforest are mixed in with dinosaur facts throughout the story. Seeing prehistoric times through Matt's eyes with his special ability was a nice touch. Overall good read.
I am a massive dinosaur fan so was delighted when I was given an ARC of this book! It is a very easy read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was well executed and it had a really good pace. Looking forward to reading more of the same.
The Dinosaur Detectives in The Amazon Rainforest (The Dinosaur Detectives #1) by Stephanie Baudet is a sweet and fun book for any child who just loves dinosaurs. It has some amazing facts and lots of information about them. I love this story its about a young lad called Matt who is 12. He is allowed to join his dad on an exciting search for dinosaur eggs in the Amazonian rainforest. Matt wants to be a palaeontologist just like his dad who is a well-respected palaeontologist and artist. Unfortunately, his annoying eleven year old cousin, Jo, gets to come along. Matt then finds out another group will be searching as well and he is not happy about this as well.. Who will find the dinosaur egg first? The adventure of search for dinosaurs eggs in the Amazonian rainforest begins.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. First time reading this author. I think this could be a good chapter book for readers. It has complex issues in it they would probably need additional discussion. These could include environmental issues, poverty, and cultural norms. Matt has an amazing talent but the book is really about a trek through the Amazon . I was hoping that it would be more about dinosaurs. Interesting read for children I think 5~8. I rratete it a 3.5.
I am reviewing this book for Stephanie Baudet, Sweet Cherry Publishing, and NetGalley who gave me a copy of their book for an honest review. The main character is a young lad who has the special ability of being able to see what dinosaurs really looked like just by holding their egg. What a great power that would be! He’s taken with his annoying cousin on an expedition with his dad and together they get into trouble. Quite fast paced so no chance of getting bored. I also enjoyed the detail describing the rainforest and at times could imagine actually being there. A great book for a primary school child.
